This scrap metal, with all its mechanical problems, high maintenance costs and lack of maneuverability was a total waste of tax payers money. The F-107 should've been selected back then, not this turkey. Shit, this thing couldn't even fly when it was the time 2 compete with the F-107. They had to postpone the fight date while, in the mean time, the North Americans Aviation was already working on their next mach 3 interceptor. This aircraft purchasing was a HUGE mistake.
As a counter-point, the 107's ancestor (Super Sabre) had problems with maintenance, compressor stalls and controllability, even after enlarging the vertical stab.
Speed was a main concern. The 105 could have been more maneuverable- this is the same problem people have with the Phantom. Neither was designed as a pure fighter- the A-4 was, but nobody faults it for not being supersonic.
@PhantomP63 The F-107 and the Super Sabre are 2 very different things. North American Aviation used their experience from the Super Sabre to build the F-107. They called the F-107 a very improved Super Sabre variant. The F-107 was much more reliable than the F-105. It also had much better performances & avionics. It actually had a sort of a fly-by-wire controls. The F-107, just like the XF-108 & every other North American Aviation's products from the '50s was fare ahead of its time.
@PhantomP63 Are you telling me that the F-107 was a bad looking airplane? Even if it was, looks is not important, but the capabilities & performances that aircraft has. And the F-107 had much better performances.
As 4 documentation, here is a shot clip where the competition is mentioned. I'll look 4 more send the links.
@PhantomP63 As for the North American Aviation aircraft, they had a lot of aircraft design experience from WW2. The fact that they were pushed away from the US military aircraft designing industry was a HUGE loss for the US aeronautics and space industry.
Nice video! you like low level flying just like i do. only i fly LOWER! :p
I have this aircraft. I love it. BUT the flight dynamics need a re think! believe it or not i managed to do a 360 turn using the rudder only :/ also turning on the ground is hard. it keeps mooving t the side. almost like the extra 300 does. after landing it slows down TOO quickly! and many others...
Trust me they're huge, but then when I saw the F-111 right next to it I almost had a heart attack, I looked down the vectors into the engine, it went all the way into the inside, IT WAS A BEAST, and luckily too, the 105 could still fly.
is it just me, or does the ground passes by very slow, unless you're flying at extremely low speeds? I mean, thud was built for low-level high speed penetration, at low level everything around should pass by in a instant. I just don't get a feeling of flying very fast at low altitude.
Well, I was flying fast, I can assure you :) The thing is that in computer simulators there is allways a bit of a scale problem...so things tend to appear a bit slower than in real life... :)
Hi mate, yes it is FSX and the water texts have been vastly improved but if you wanna see even better texts get REX for FSX!!!! I mean....you have to see it simply amazing!!!! Go look at their website :)
The F-105 Thunderchief-still remains the biggest single seat fighter ever produced. In it's final flight, F-15s had problems keeping up with it.

The 105 could only stay in inverted flight for 10 or so seconds. It did not have dual oil slumps.

the only thing the f-105 was good at was getting shoot down by mig's and SAM's

@StiviGun1 Whoever said NAA never made a bad-looking airplane was right...
Have you found any documentation on the competition?

@StiviGun1 ? I said that I agree with the saying "they never made a bad-looking airplane".

Want the website link? It show's all their planes, especially the Thunder chief and Thunder streak.

That would be great :) I would be very grateful if you could give me the link...:)

Holy cow that's amazing. The minimum specs to run that REX stuff must be out of this world

Great Aircraft! It was one of my favorites.

hey man when u install th aircraft where do you put the burner 'texture' folder in the 'effects' folder?
do you find that the flaps srew you up when you use them?
