  • Love the music. <3

  • This is not rotoscoped. The animation moves with the same fluidity and carefulness of other pieces of Russian animation. Some key poses may have been traced, but the way characters move in this short is definitely not human. It's quite impressive though. I'd actually like to know the process used to make this.

  • 2:26 is that chuck norris

  • 0:38 unless they r aliens, i find it offensive.

  • This is like old Indiana Jones animation

  • Wow

  • so much better than anime or whatever else, this is awesome!

  • R.I.P Anatoly Petrov

  • Looks like rotoscope.

  • @cbandla That is definitely rotoscoped.

  • @ifureadthisdie

I concur. Can only be rotoscoped. Good story though.

  • Was this made using the same techniques from the Russian short, Old Man and the Sea (paint-on-glass animation)? This is really impressive stuff. Wow.

  • Sorry, I mean RED not read :)

  • Info: The idea of this mult - story "The Poligon" by Sever Gansovsky (soviet science fiction writer 1918.12.15 - 1990.09.06)

i read it in my childhood.

  • Very good and very typical ideas for that time.

  • Man, I love Russian animation. So darn interesting.

  • This tank - the judge. The higher judge. WHICH killed for bad which is in us.

It is good that God - not the car. God is love, but the court will be probably same terrible, couse this court will be firm

  • @Alekseyguran

  • I really wanted the young veteran to survive. He was fearless and practical up to the last moment.

  • The terminator, lol

  • Wow wow WOW. This is GREAT. This is INCREDIBLE. Forget propaganda - this is some awesome art.

  • Yes ,its the Anti war propaganda, but its much better than the WAR propaganda, or not?

  • wow! intense animation! Why can't there be more stuff that's almost as good as this?...Because it's too painstaking. Why else should we go for stuff like anime(where everyone looks the same, except with a different wig, body shape.), or cartoons that are animated worse than south park(and I mean worse, but of course south park is outrageously funny, and not that bad), because it's easier to do than this! But anyway this is intense animation right here!

  • There's actually a lot of good quelity animation as this, shorts and feature films require some quality to be acepted. When you animate for TV, or when you don't have enough budget, you use to make limited animation. When you work for Tv, time is too short to develop a episode the same quality a feature film that takes years.

  • i seen the "masters of russian animation" back in 1998 on tv and almost bought the whole collection but never got around to placing an order.....after ten years of regret im glad and very gr8ful to see them on here...thank you!

  • Wow, imagine if Russian animation became popular instead of Anime... Hmmm.

  • @RaptorFarmer Watch "Vampires of Geona" and "АМБА". Last soviet days-animations, with a old anime style =)

  • @RaptorFarmer

It would never had became popular because America did everything possible to hide and distort every good thing that came out the Soviet Union.

The Soviet Union is gone now. And so we have south park and family guy. And that´s all we´ll have.

  • @AaronDeEsparza lol food shortages, what good they did.

  • you can compare, but you cant say one's better

  • what a great story

  • Very good animation!I'm glad I found this too!

  • Excellent for animation that is 30 years old.

  • @pavlovich74 It's excellent for animation, period.

  • @CrazyKirlia You are right, of course. I hope you have seen his many other works. The early "Carousel" shorts were amazing.

  • That is some very interesting animation, very lifelike.

  • Great great

  • I wonder what this video refers to when it mentions the colonies in Africa...

  • there were many battles in Africa, during WWII, he was referring to the platoons or battalions or whatever that were stationed there,

  • I think he was referring to South Africa during Apartheid.

  • If I recall he used a somewhat odd process of the cells being actually oil paintings on glass.

  • Different aesthetics, can't compare.

Japanese anime are commercial products; this one is purely artistic.

It's like you can't compare classical music with pop music because they are two different things and they are for different groups of listeners.

  • You can compare classical and pop music. Tempo, bass, intruments, volume, placement of crescendo and many other points. You can compare Japanese and Russian animations in the same way, though not on the same points.

  • Compare a Schubert lieder with a pop song, perhaps you can do that because they are both short vocal works, but only to certain extent. But a comparison between a Mahler symphony with pop or rock music is completely out of the question, because they are conceived and executed on different scales, and their ranges of expression are on different levels.

Pop music is created to make money, lots and lots of money. Classical music is not(most of them are not).

  • "Different aesthetics, can't compare.

Japanese anime are commercial products; this one is purely artistic."

This only goes to show that you've not really delved much into the high-art side of japanese animation.

Watch Satoshi Kon's, Hayao Miyazaki's, or Katsushiro Otomo's movies. Hell, even check out some of Osamu Tezuka's animated films - several of which to this day are inventive and incredible works of art.

Actually, see the movie anthology 'Memories.'

  • Im so glad that the Russians did all these great animations, its soooo much greater than all he crap that Disney is twrowing at out nowadays(Old Disney is also top class)

  • Don't forget Dreamworks adding on to the crap they've been giving us. They're more worse than Disney put together.

  • OMG

  • im so sick of all the crappy animation we have now (japanese), glad i found this :)

  • Epic.

    In a serious way.

  • OMG haven't seen this in a long time

  • kick ass video, the message is great, poor doctor, even he got into the fear

  • i my god, this is awesome!

reminds me of the BOLO tank series.

  • really cool!

  • Wow... this is really cool animation! Its impressionistic and lifelike at the same time... the facial expressions are really impressive!
