I can't believe how wonderfully lucky I am. Thank you. I am writing a crime novel set in 1981. The guy needs an alibi for 10 o'clock on 24th June. He said I was watching the news, Oh yes said the detective What was on. WOW... thank you davidmcn ... what a coincidence! Thank you
Must say shes not really aged too well I was shocked when I saw her goin on about ageism She aged really badly even since was on Sky News. Must have had hard paper round lol!!
I do too, I think it's a good, clear way of speaking that everyone can understand. However, I still personally feel that there are not enough regional accents on the television. It's always snotty, stuck-up southerners, and rarely anyone else.
Southern accents still dominate, but it's much more Estuary/Mockney/Bluntish (my term for the speech of young posh people - obvious who it's after) than old-school RP these days.
Trouble in Israel-Palestine, waste of taxpayer's money on large projects, mediocre 'debate' in the House of Commons - really, nothing changes at all, does it?
If only we had MPs in UK parliament with eye patches. This is a fantastic historical artifact: Charles & Di, escaped prisoners, Wimbledon, the man who shot at the queen, wow what an edition! I'd forgotten about the great reporters too: Joan Thirkettle (RIP), Jeremy Hands, Ken Rees. Selina Scott? Um...no.

KB7KB7KB7 2 years ago
@KB7KB7KB7 The cars throughout the entire 1980's were all about sharp, angular lines, lol. It was as if curves had been banned.

@Gregz0r1 1980s not 1980's

@ajuk1 Wow. If you're being *that* pedantic, shouldn't it also be "1980s, not 1980's."?
Gregz0r1 1 year ago
@KB7KB7KB7 Actually the buses don't look a lot different to today's in my opinion.

Nope, they didn't allow cameras in until 1989.

I wonder if Selina Scott was campaigning for older news readers in 1981?
Or was she happy being a young 20 something news reader earning loadsa dosh and in the lime light ?

@davidmcn
They did have radio recordings then. I'm not sure why they had someone read out comments rather than play the audio clips.

I Love her accent. It is absolutly clear pronunciation, and also very harmonious.
I totally agree with Asurris

Amazing that someone with such an accent was taken seriously on TV as recently as 1981!
