There seems to be an arms race to make (or lie about) basses that keep on adding strings. what is this shit?? Can't you guys just turn a piano on its side, put a big ass strap on it and play that? Oh I forgot, you'll have to design an 88 string fingerboard under the strings so you can tap it.
I've heard of a mysterious guitar company called Tennessee Guitars that make extended range instruments (such as a certain triple neck guitar that I WANT!), and apparently they have built a fifteen string bass. If anyone has any information regarding it, it's quality, or the quality of any Tennessee guitars, could they please tell me?
DO NOT BUY TENNESSEE GUITARS. Read the reviews, you will see yourself. Apparently, everything that could possibly be wrong with any musical instrument is wrong with Tennessee guitars. Some guy on Harmony Central commented that it's "the biggest turd I've ever laid my hands on" and another said "the nut looks like it was slotted by an 8 yr old Chinese sweatshop employee, which it probably was". Somebody said "if you want a cheap multi stringed instrument Galveston is the way to go". (continued..)
(continuing) I've looked into this too and apparently Galveston are not the least bit ashamed to show their faces. They do make some compound/extended range instruments (including a triple neck guitar, FYI) that are supposed to be extremely playable at an affordable price (<$1000). I may buy their 8-string bass soon, which apparently is much more playable that the 15 string bass (anything is, really) but keeps the range within reason. I strongly recommend looking into it.
Fair point mate. I've got the Tennessee 15. Firstly, quality wise - it's a bit of a bitch but, that said, it's good for a project guitar/bass.
I've worked mine out and replaced a few things and now it handles more like a bass ought to.
It's got guitar string spacing, just like the Ibanez SR2007 bass/guitar they brought out at NAMM last year. Either way, ity's good to get one and do it your way rather than leave it as a stock instrument. Failing that (continued...)
(...Continued) the best thing to do is get some good wood, fill in the machine head holes, sand them down after they've set and drill 11 holes for proper bass tuners.
Then (as advized by Garry Goodman) Buy a Villex hi-fi pre-amp and then pickups of your choice - I've ordered a pair of Seymour Duncan ASB6-2's for a start. If the higher end is lacking, I'm going to put a Blackouts 8 string guitar pickup in it.
Not exactly following the rules but, someone's got to find these things out.
@DreadnoughtMetal2006 I'm sure you went thru ebay to get this,. I haven't seen any of them up in a while. I'm interested in buying one. You wouldn't happen to know of one for sale would you?
@MattixIcexBaby - I did yes. What I'm currently doing is looking for the correct string gauges for this bass and then when I've done that, I'll finish out my recording schedule using it and then it will be for sale. It actually sounds great with the new pickups in. Octave4Plus or Circle K Strings will be what you want for this. I'm using a Dean Markely's .008 for the high D# string on it - I can get an E out of it but, that's another day. Do email me via hotmail if you can and I'll update you.
There is one 15 string custom bass made by Tennesse guitars, conklin has made several 9 strings, Ken Lawrence has made an eleven string, I built my 9 string and its strings range is from .165 to .011
This guy make a 13 strings bass... So what ?! even if the bass can't be tuned and can't be played. I don't care. He made a bass (or a looklike bass)and if he's happy this way fine. I've got friends who don't play music but because they like a kind of bass and guitar they bought it. 13string made his own bass and even if it is muted, that's a god training to make a regular bass.
i just feel sorry for the guy who claims to be james ogdens brother who he wont speak to. thats a lot more fucked up than trying to make a 13 string bass, failing, and still trying to sell it
So many dead give aways on this one. No frets. One big long "pick up" that is, so we're told, a hollowed out piece of wood, aka, a piece of wood. One nob, even the cheapest basses have two nobs, one for volume, one for tone. Never tuned. Never played. You want to see a real extended range bass check out the guys at conklin, they built a couple of Jean Baudin's basses.
Someone please explain the logic behind the headstock and why the strings are not relative to the machine heads. (ie: top string to 'first' machine head, next string to 'second' machine head, etc, etc)
It may well be a real bass, I could live with the odd (questionable) bridge and headstock design, but I'm suspicious of the fact there are no sound clips of it, and that he deletes any skeptical comments.
I want to see a clip of someone playing the thing. It's not much to ask for, considering the amount of hype he filled his videos with.
It could be real in that, yes, a luthier that knows what they are doing could make a 13 stringed bass. This guy is not one of those though. This thing is at best a very ordinary sculpture and at worst one of the most fraudulent attempts to extort money from unsuspecting people over the internet by passing of a chunk of painted wood with no electronics or even a working system of strings as a musical instrument.
The sound effect at the end of this video made me laugh my fully functional, 6 string bass playing ass off!!! I'd bet if this jack off were to try and tune this pile of shit the "WOODEN BRIDGE" would most likely splinter apart!!!!!
What I find so very sad is the thought that this guy seems to know how to build a guitar (maybe I'm wrong) and yet decided to waste what appears to be a lot of time on this creation. I mean, if that monster does work, I'd love to hear it! I hate to think that he'd waste his time on something that just looks cool!
hey biliousfrog take another look at the headstock look at the way he has the machine heads positioned about half of them wouldn't be able for a full rotation hence not able to tune it in properly anyway.
No, he covered his homemade pickup in a hollowed-out shell for looks. he describes in a bunch of his videos the construction of his pickup using wound ferrite magnets. Why are there so many people who just want to spend their time berating people's individual achievements? Sod off. 13strings has inspired me to build my own guitar.
yeah, why is everyone hving a go at him. So what if it's fake, who cares, and why? Jelousy? I mean, what hav ehte rest of you assholes done? NOTHING. Precisely.
Joshnio just read the comment i left on your page nobody is or can be envious of this little scam artist playing of a gullible youtube public yet he can barely spell and types in caps lolololol
and as for the Goliath i hope you get some help do Not build it from pine ffs. and i like the way you think your pissing us of i just made videos for a place that people can come and leave a comment on what they really think of your creations and they wont get deleted. your such a cool guy trying to make up bullshit excuses for why and how it didn't work just admit you haven't a clue.
true, true...but I can safely say that all the guitars that I've made, customised & repaired over the years have worked. In my opinion, it's better to have a fully functional guitar or bass rather than something that offers the earth but doesn't deliver anything other than comedy value.
...& of course the bass is fine, it's only used to prance around in front of the mirror...like that freak in silence of the lambs, you'll be naked except for your matrix style, sunday market coat...cock between your legs & jumping around with that monstrosity, pretending to be popular.
look out, the retard is back & this time he's gonna waste even more of B&Q's finest 2x2 with a 14 string version...at least he'll be warm this winter, huddled round the burning remains outside the homeless shelter with the rest of life's rejects.
13 strings aka james ogden is my little brother. he has banned me from posting on his page and wont talk to me and i havent got a clue why. he has now smashed the bass in a fit of rage so ive been told.

I feel so bad for the sorry sap whos fool enough to buy that piece of junk and watch it snap in 2 when he tries to play it. People need to learn that this guy is a fake and need to stop supporting him, its just going to lead to this fool creating more flawed instruments and stealing more money from people. It's a shame really, because the art of instrument making is just that, an art and for it to be disrespected like this makes me sick.
The reason people care is that this build is flawed in every way imaginable, and he wants to sell it and is keeping anyone who has a clue, from pointing out how much of a scam this is. You never even see the pickup being built, and he refuses to post a video of it being played. So no one even knows if the thing will even make any sound.
what's bothering me & many others so much is that he's deleting any comments that point out the problems with the build (which are many)& then blocking any more comments from those members. The bass is completely flawed in every respect but he's making out that he's some kind of genius & it's annoying that the only comments that he allows add to his Delusions of grandeur
True enough. But if you want to stake the claim "world's first" then you should be prepared to back it up. Especially if you want to post all over youtube making such claims. And he's trying to sell it for a wad of cash, and I doubt there's a money back guarantee. And while it's not likely to sell he is trying to scam someone out of their hard earned cash.

pine is the worst wood to use -its very soft i cant image it holding up to the stress of 13 bass strings!!
the body also is very small so it must be very neck-heavy making it very awkward to play.
