  • yeh i love this song and beleive it or not i am just a 12 years old boy but i love vintage musics and old musics :)

  • Che bella voce! Che brividi! "Pippo" sa trasmettere la più grande emozione.

  • Such a holy, pure sound of voice is art when executed from the depths of soul.

  • Amazing! One of the best Rodolfos of all time, my favorite in this aria.

  • I agree with swan 1940. I'm almost 64 and Di Stefano has the same effect on me!!!!

    Best wishes,

    Pete

  • @hopelesslyderanged My mother was a music lover and had a fascination to opera and great singers and 24/7 she played them, some times tears ranning her face.I love it to,and I took my doughter to the opera when she was 4 .And she took my grand doughter and naw my mother no longer with us but we lissen together, three generation.Be happy and enjoy it you have a loving heart.

  • Just looked it up...it was in Rigoletto....he made a magnificent recording of Rigoletto, which I still have, with Callas and Tito Gobbi...bought the album when I was stationed in Germany in 1955......

  • If I'm not mistaken di stefano made his American operatic deput at the Met. in the late '40's when I first heard him and he was just magnificent...please, someone correct me if I'm wrong.....

  • @hopelesslyderanged you are not alone, i'm 23, but i grew up with my mom listening to the three tenors, so therefore i did as well. i like some newer music as well, nothing can compare to the pure musical beauty of opera, especially this aria.

  • @cheezythewhiz WE are not alone! I'm 21, and really love opera. I'm also taking classes to sing opera.

  • @hopelesslyderanged i'm 16, in china, and opera is becoming more and more popular here!! here's one other person out there like you! :) i love opera

  • I have neard many versions of this aria but this ranks right at the very top in my opinion. To many times to much emphasis is placed on the quality of the High C cadenza at the end but many times the voice is to light and thin. Di Stefano has a richness and smootheness of tone that adds real colour throughout and effortlessly glides to a high C with real control an open sound and balanced resonance.. this is my ideal tenor someone who has the colour and retains it even at the highest register

  • di Stefano at his glorious best no doubt about it Maestro Puccini would have approved

  • esperanza...makes me cry every time

  • @draymond1024 are you under the impression that this aria is sung in Spanish?

  • Fabulous ! But this is still Bjorling territory. Dsteff and Pav come close, but no one unseats Jussi Bjorling.

  • I listened to Del Monacos rendition and it was truly awful. What a joy to hear it like this, Bjorling may be more famous as Rodolfo, and he is wonderful with his silver voice, but the clarity of Di Stefanos singing, the gorgeous diminuendos and pianissimos! Luckily one can listen to both singers, depending in what mood one is. But to think that Del Monacos admirers are at least 5 times more numerous than the ones listening to this angel from heaven. Well, real art is seldom appreciated...

  • @zgopify , comparing Mario Del Monaco with Giuseppe Di Stefano is like comparing AK-47 with some pocket pistol on a basis that both are firearms, complete nonsense. Not to mention comparing any singers performance, sang while in his prime, to performance of other singer sang in retirement/his declining years. Both MDM and Di Stefano count as best tenors of the 20th century, naturally, one as dramatic and other as lyric tenor.

  • tremendo tenor

  • Never heard this man sing before??? why not?? a wonderful voice. Thank you for sharing this.

  • Were God a singer, this is what he's sound like!

  • Excel·lent

  • THE BEST OF THE BEST!

  • I agree that di Stefano had a beautiful light tenor voice. However, you can hear in this recording just how unsupported his top was. It is strange but despite his beautiful voice, I still prefer Schipa and Gigli to di Stefano.

  • @MissLadyboy007 I can only feel sorry for you.

  • Absolutely the best singer to ever perform this aria.

  • Sublime Di Stefano Grazie !

  • Best Che gelida manina for me would have to go to Caruso or Pavarotti. I think, though, that di Stefano's 1944 una furtiva is the greatest.

  • Who?

  • I don't think Pav can shine Pippo's shoes in this or any aria. Of course, Pav sang much longer, but with no abandon for me. Give me Pippo any day.

  • @operabeauty How very true!

  • Dear leadoffeohippus,

please try Benjamino Gigli or Jussi Björling and you might change your rating.....

  • @1000bestmusic Both great versions, but personally, Gigli"s version, to lachrymose, and Bjorling, not enough passion. Just listen to the final act of Boheme with di Stefano & Callas.

Then .Compere Bjorling version, i am sure you will agree i have a point .

  • @281308ful I have followed your suggestion and purchased the CD- compilation Guiseppe di Stefano - The charming voice (10 CD's) . Highly recommendable. Plucks the soul right out of the body ! Do you know a good biography about him? Kind regards

  • Caruso and pavarotti is good.

    Try Gigli also.

  • Truly stunning, Pippo

  • Simplemente, extraordinario!... que hermosísima voz!

  • A truly great man.

  • THE best

  • A beautiful performance; it ranks with those of Caruso, Gigli, Bjorling, and Pavarotti. With Di Stefano's singing, I suppose, the earlier the better. The artistry, however, would remain.

  • what a great singer!

  • The fact that his passagio problems are not covered up here really shows how legitimate these older studio recordings are.

Beautiful, beautiful voice. From the first words, a calmness engulfs me that very few singers achieve.

  • I'm 68 years old and he still brings tears to my eyes and a welling of emotion that is, simply, indescribable----

  • @swan1940 Being from the same generation, i am 69, i have been a great fan of pippo di stefano for over 45 years, i agree with your every word.

He can still move me to tears, especially his

E SOLITA STORIA. there will never be another.

  • @swan1940 Me too. Beautifull song!! Regards from Brasil

  • @swan1940 I'm 63 and agree 100%!

    Best wishes,

    Peter

  • @swan1940

  • @swan1940 well said. i agree . only saw di stefano live two times

  • He was simply the best!

  • ulla nolus cama le bräsch??

  • I love Di Stefano..RIP (tears)

  • Yeah i hear throatyness, the voice is AWESOME... but the placement needs to be higher to maintain that sound through old age.

all in all, MAGNIFICENT rendition.. i cant really complain. =)

  • What a VOICE! Perfect!

  • thanks for posting ;)

  • beautiful voice, a voice of italian gentleman

  • A truly beautiful voice, his rendition of Che Gelida Manina is among one of my favourites. His high C(I think it is...) on "... la speranza" gives me goosebumps. I have a CD with him and Maria Callas in La Bohème - priceless...

  • his tender and warm voice give ease in my stressful mind, thanks for posting this

  • This is a 1950 recording. He made another in 1958 which I prefer.
