@hopelesslyderanged My mother was a music lover and had a fascination to opera and great singers and 24/7 she played them, some times tears ranning her face.I love it to,and I took my doughter to the opera when she was 4 .And she took my grand doughter and naw my mother no longer with us but we lissen together, three generation.Be happy and enjoy it you have a loving heart.
Just looked it up...it was in Rigoletto....he made a magnificent recording of Rigoletto, which I still have, with Callas and Tito Gobbi...bought the album when I was stationed in Germany in 1955......
If I'm not mistaken di stefano made his American operatic deput at the Met. in the late '40's when I first heard him and he was just magnificent...please, someone correct me if I'm wrong.....
@hopelesslyderanged you are not alone, i'm 23, but i grew up with my mom listening to the three tenors, so therefore i did as well. i like some newer music as well, nothing can compare to the pure musical beauty of opera, especially this aria.
I have neard many versions of this aria but this ranks right at the very top in my opinion. To many times to much emphasis is placed on the quality of the High C cadenza at the end but many times the voice is to light and thin. Di Stefano has a richness and smootheness of tone that adds real colour throughout and effortlessly glides to a high C with real control an open sound and balanced resonance.. this is my ideal tenor someone who has the colour and retains it even at the highest register
I listened to Del Monacos rendition and it was truly awful. What a joy to hear it like this, Bjorling may be more famous as Rodolfo, and he is wonderful with his silver voice, but the clarity of Di Stefanos singing, the gorgeous diminuendos and pianissimos! Luckily one can listen to both singers, depending in what mood one is. But to think that Del Monacos admirers are at least 5 times more numerous than the ones listening to this angel from heaven. Well, real art is seldom appreciated...
@zgopify , comparing Mario Del Monaco with Giuseppe Di Stefano is like comparing AK-47 with some pocket pistol on a basis that both are firearms, complete nonsense. Not to mention comparing any singers performance, sang while in his prime, to performance of other singer sang in retirement/his declining years. Both MDM and Di Stefano count as best tenors of the 20th century, naturally, one as dramatic and other as lyric tenor.
I agree that di Stefano had a beautiful light tenor voice. However, you can hear in this recording just how unsupported his top was. It is strange but despite his beautiful voice, I still prefer Schipa and Gigli to di Stefano.
@1000bestmusic Both great versions, but personally, Gigli"s version, to lachrymose, and Bjorling, not enough passion. Just listen to the final act of Boheme with di Stefano & Callas.
Then .Compere Bjorling version, i am sure you will agree i have a point .
@281308ful I have followed your suggestion and purchased the CD- compilation Guiseppe di Stefano - The charming voice (10 CD's) . Highly recommendable. Plucks the soul right out of the body ! Do you know a good biography about him? Kind regards
A beautiful performance; it ranks with those of Caruso, Gigli, Bjorling, and Pavarotti. With Di Stefano's singing, I suppose, the earlier the better. The artistry, however, would remain.
A truly beautiful voice, his rendition of Che Gelida Manina is among one of my favourites. His high C(I think it is...) on "... la speranza" gives me goosebumps. I have a CD with him and Maria Callas in La Bohème - priceless...
yeh i love this song and beleive it or not i am just a 12 years old boy but i love vintage musics and old musics :)

Fabulous ! But this is still Bjorling territory. Dsteff and Pav come close, but no one unseats Jussi Bjorling.

Best Che gelida manina for me would have to go to Caruso or Pavarotti. I think, though, that di Stefano's 1944 una furtiva is the greatest.

I don't think Pav can shine Pippo's shoes in this or any aria. Of course, Pav sang much longer, but with no abandon for me. Give me Pippo any day.

Beautiful, beautiful voice. From the first words, a calmness engulfs me that very few singers achieve.
