My friend and I rented the VHS version of this in 1984 and watched it over and over and over......she discovered Status Quo....I fell in love with Midge and Ultravox
the making of the greatest song that saved many african lives! may god rewards all the people responsible for this song! maybe not now...but in heavens! praise! haleluiah!
True, Bob did have the initial idea and pressured everyone into participating, but Midge wrote 95% of the song, produced the whole thing and managed everything behind the scenes. He was basically in charge of it all, yet he never gets the credit for his part in all of this. Damn shame. You are appreciated, Midge!
@harrietcow Midge doesn't get the respect he deserves, but he didn't write the song alone & Bob did ALL the work behind Live Aid, as well making it happen, that's why Midge's contributions to the song get overlooked, but it's a misconception that he wrote the song along, although he DID produce it because Bob was managing everything else regarding the record.
From tundra219: "This video is a testament to the greatness of Midge Ure. He's the one who coaxed the performances out of these singers and chose the best. He's got a great ear, and it comes from his experience as a top notch singer."
Spot on, tundra219. Most people think this was all Geldof (mostly because he hogged the limelight and WANTED to give the impression that it was all down to him) but in fact, Midge Ure was responsible for this song being the smash success it was. To be con't..
@4JayeP Yes, Simon is as true a professional as you get in music...but you realize, he'd recorded his vocals days before and had sung these parts a bunch before.
It's a ton easier to nail something in one take when you've already done it before...still impressive job though.
i am very glad that so much of the behind-the-scenes work was filmed for posterity....i would never have guessed how much hard work and cooperation it took to make this song...the finished cut sounds like they all just came in nailed it on the first take. My hat is forever off to all participants.
Bob Geldoff said in an interview that he wanted Collins just to sing on the thing but Collins heard the track and went "let me go get my drums" Geldoff was worried that recording Collins' drums would take two days but Collins set up his kit and got the mics ready in little over 15 minutes. You can say what you want but Collins' drumming really brought this track to life.
This video is a testament to the greatness of Midge Ure. He's the one who coaxed the performances out of these singers and chose the best. He's got a great ear, and it comes from his experience as a top notch singer.
Depeche Mode convivia entra las disputas de sus personalidades internas Martin Gore y Alan Wilder menos van a bancarse compartir con otra gente. ¿Iron Maiden? a esos no les importa su vida menos la de otros...
mangahead21 - i dont know what you're talking about. bono has a great voice. i think he was just really uncomfortable. He's a great live singer. u2 has one of the best live performances in rock music. and they've outlasted a lot of these bands too.
Even though I don't like the guy (love his music though !) I think Paul Weller has to be given credit for turning up to do this. For those of you old enough to remember, Mr Weller wasn't exactly everyone's cup of tea. He got stuck into just about every one of the bands that featured in Band Aid at one point or another. If I remember, he was like the eternal outcast during this recording. He could so easily have chickened out but -give him credit- he stuck it out.
Wait wait wait...where'd u hear this? I wanna learn more. Weller was the odd man out here? I always wondered who were the rivals in all this (even though they ALL put their egos aside during it)
Ah Jesus!! 'Blue Monday' is a song by that other popular 80s band, New Order!
Simon Le Bon did not f*cking sing Blue Monday!! Maybe you're thinking of 'Howl At The Wolf/Moon' by Duran Duran?? Wotever the bloody name of it was.
But 'Blue Monday' is a New Order song!! New Order were way more edgy than Duran Duran - out on the fringes, totally cool. Duran Duran were/are good but totallt different to New Order!
I am not a U2 fan but, Bono is turning the finalizations of the phrases more rich and encreasing the harmony. Besides it, I can tell that those two guys on 6:33 are totally out of tune.
Simon LeBon is fookin grrrreat! What a strong voice though eh? He's also a great harmonizer. He's a prime example of a lead singer who in the begining of his career, he really sucked live, but has improved huge.
bono was out on nearly every note...show's how much he needed his studio comfort blankets in the early days, then again he isn't much better live now so...says something about raw talent anyway.
"Don't DO that, it hurts!" My thoughts exactly...
