True, Bob did have the initial idea and pressured everyone into participating, but Midge wrote 95% of the song, produced the whole thing and managed everything behind the scenes. He was basically in charge of it all, yet he never gets the credit for his part in all of this. Damn shame. You are appreciated, Midge!

@harrietcow Midge doesn't get the respect he deserves, but he didn't write the song alone & Bob did ALL the work behind Live Aid, as well making it happen, that's why Midge's contributions to the song get overlooked, but it's a misconception that he wrote the song along, although he DID produce it because Bob was managing everything else regarding the record.

@4JayeP Yes, Simon is as true a professional as you get in music...but you realize, he'd recorded his vocals days before and had sung these parts a bunch before.

It's a ton easier to nail something in one take when you've already done it before...still impressive job though.

i am very glad that so much of the behind-the-scenes work was filmed for posterity....i would never have guessed how much hard work and cooperation it took to make this song...the finished cut sounds like they all just came in nailed it on the first take. My hat is forever off to all participants.

Bob Geldoff said in an interview that he wanted Collins just to sing on the thing but Collins heard the track and went "let me go get my drums" Geldoff was worried that recording Collins' drums would take two days but Collins set up his kit and got the mics ready in little over 15 minutes. You can say what you want but Collins' drumming really brought this track to life.

Even though I don't like the guy (love his music though !) I think Paul Weller has to be given credit for turning up to do this. For those of you old enough to remember, Mr Weller wasn't exactly everyone's cup of tea. He got stuck into just about every one of the bands that featured in Band Aid at one point or another. If I remember, he was like the eternal outcast during this recording. He could so easily have chickened out but -give him credit- he stuck it out.
