How do I go about getting a tattoo while in service? I keep hearing what's not allowed but not how to get one, is there a form or something of that nature?
im hating this policy wish i knew about it before i got my tattoo would of put it in a place less visible now im delayed to swearing in for a least 2 weeks to a month if not more.

apon further research the tattoo policy isnt too bad you can't have your tattoos sleeved[connected} in PT gear BUT you can have "individual" tattoos as big as your hand and thumb connected and fully extended.So you can still get some decent sized work done ,you just have to be creative about it.
Can't wait to go into the Marines and earn my tats. I'm gonna get the Nautical star, hoping for the turtle shell back and maybe a swallow or two. prolly an anchor also. ive debated the chicken/pig tats on the foot, not to sure bout those. might just do with out them. meh what ever. along wiht the traditional Navy tats (i guess i take more pride in the sailor roots than the average marine/future marine) im gonna gte an EGA, devil dog tag that prolly is flexing or something, and a semper fi tat.
I reread the regs, you can have individual tattoos on your forearm that are 5 inches in length and in width{a 5 inch diameter} that is the largest forearm tattoo you can have on your forearm and the largest that can be covered by your hand, that is still a pretty decent amount of ink.am I correct?
@PinkyNugga0331 As long as it's covered, you're good. It can't stick out past the bottom of your palm or beyond the tips of your finger. The tattoo regs are honestly not too hard to follow, you can send me a picture of it, with you covering it, I'll tell you if it's legit or not. Good to go?

I'm looking to get a tattoo of a Celtic cross on my upper back below the c7 vertebrae which is supposedly acceptable but I'm not sure if the art itself if going to be allowed and I'm joining the corps shortly after I get the tattoo. If anyone knows if the tattoo isnt going to exclude me from being able to enlist it would be greatly appreciated.

It didn't state in this vid if any religious tattoos are banned because I heard if its religion or corp related have at it. I Mean it's more than reasonable to restrict tattoos that are not covered by PT uniforms, That leaves your Back your Chest, stomach, and ass if you desire. Still plenty of room to ink.

The problem is that as the popularity and acceptance of tatoos have increaced over the years, tatted sleevs have become more provalant. The Marines want you to look clean cut and not too eccentric. A tat or two is fine but when you are covered in them it is considered eccentric. A tattoo or 2 is tradition but looking like you just got out of prison is eccentric.

@HPG45 If you wil be entering the Marine Corps do not get that Blood stripe as you can only rate those when you make E4 and above. It is for NCO's only.

i have 2 tattoo. 1 that says "ALOFA" on my left wrist & a small <3. which is homemade that i stupidly did when i was 16 with a needle and pen ink. now i have to go find a doctor that is willing to remove it for a fare price. ugh
i just talked to my Recruiter, and he said my tattoos cover more than 25% of my arm which is considered a sleeve tattoo, which bans me from joining. but im i have a choice to get one of them removed, which im going too. I just think its bullshit. Tattoos is a part of the Marine history, everyone one i know including my grandfather was all tattooed while in the marines.

I have been going through tattoo removal for the past 8 months to join the Marine Corps. Its a small one on my neck and i regret ever getting it not that its taking me so long to get into the Marines. Still think that tattoos should NOT matter.
When i joined the marines i had a tattoo of a rebel flag,dream catcher, and a bull skull. That didnt stop me from enlisting, i just had to fill out some more paperwork on my tat like where did i get it,what does it mean to me and etc. but they will do some background search on you and if your good to go, your good to go!

@sharpyshotz i have a buddy that got USMC and his name cover his whole back. he enlisted in 2005 and after his first term just enlisted another 2 years. he is currently now a Sgt stationed in japan. just to make sure you didnt get screwed try contacting another recruiting depot and see what they say about it and if they can check it out. you might even be able to get a waiver for it as long as its not bad and you dont need a waiver for anything else they will probably consider it

Question I pose to my fellow marines who might know more about regs than I would. It didn't state in this vid if any religious tattoos are banned because I heard if its religion or corp related have at it. Because I'm re upping soon and I want to get a full sleeve on my left arm to show my devotion to my faith. Any answers to give?

they only made this policy to make it harder to enlist because there is an over load of people joining the marines. can you ever remember there being a waiting list in the military? this ploicy can get more strict in 6 months but also could remove the policy in 6 months. time will tell

The problem is that as the popularity and acceptance of tatoos have increaced over the years, tatted sleevs have become more provalant. The Marines want you to look clean cut and not too eccentric. A tat or two is fine but when you are covered in them it is considered eccentric. A tattoo or 2 is tradition but looking like you just got out of prison is eccentric.

Ridiculous PC rules. I spent 8 years in the Marine Corps and was a Drill Instructor at Parris Island and I had tattoos on my arms since I was a teen. It never made a differance whenever I stood before any board for exam. How times have changed.

i have 2 tattoo. 1 that says "ALOFA" on my left wrist & a small <3. which is homemade that i stupidly did when i was 16 with a needle and pen ink. now i have to go find a doctor that is willing to remove it for a fare price. ugh

i just talked to my Recruiter, and he said my tattoos cover more than 25% of my arm which is considered a sleeve tattoo, which bans me from joining. but im i have a choice to get one of them removed, which im going too. I just think its bullshit. Tattoos is a part of the Marine history, everyone one i know including my grandfather was all tattooed while in the marines.

the reason this is becoming a policy is b/c in any branch of service u are no individual, you work with ur team to complete missions and tasks. tattoos are a mark of individuality. that's all.
i agree with the sleeve statement in this video tho. despite what some ppl think, i believe there is a such thing as too many tattoos.

I have been going through tattoo removal for the past 8 months to join the Marine Corps. Its a small one on my neck and i regret ever getting it not that its taking me so long to get into the Marines. Still think that tattoos should NOT matter.

When i joined the marines i had a tattoo of a rebel flag,dream catcher, and a bull skull. That didnt stop me from enlisting, i just had to fill out some more paperwork on my tat like where did i get it,what does it mean to me and etc. but they will do some background search on you and if your good to go, your good to go!

@spade2592 If you get a tatto on your back it wont affect your recruitment in anyway, its hidden obviously in all ways so youll be good, its actually the only spot the will be conceal at all times. If you get some racist or evil shit, then it be different because they still would still ask to see your tattoo and see whats it about.

@sharpyshotz i have a buddy that got USMC and his name cover his whole back. he enlisted in 2005 and after his first term just enlisted another 2 years. he is currently now a Sgt stationed in japan. just to make sure you didnt get screwed try contacting another recruiting depot and see what they say about it and if they can check it out. you might even be able to get a waiver for it as long as its not bad and you dont need a waiver for anything else they will probably consider it
