  • Many you tubers are gay. As the late Dick Nixon said, "Homos are our leading innovators. All great inventions in this era are from homos.

  • i love both versions, his and the isley brothers

  • Lady Ga Ga.....Todd was first !

  • @zoocusgazebo1 First thing I thought of too!

  • What a beautiful performance. We are lucky to have sweet sensitive souls like this on earth.

  • Musically:

    GAGA = pretender and crap

    Rundgren = original and golden

1973-1979 = the GOLDEN ERA of music. Take the time skpetics . . . watch the Midnight Special, andTop of the Pops vid's on youtube from this era . . . what happened to the music? By, By, Miss American Pie . . Drove My Chevy to the Levy but the Levy was dry . .

  • @mrwhitford1966 yep and i was born in 75

  • who gives a fuck if hes gay! fuck you

  • Comment removed

  • I am sure some of the GaGa=ites would be amazed that there DIVA is no original in the outlandish costume rock dept...Love Todd...some of his production work for other bands..I was not always so kind...Peace..

  • It puts the lotion into the basket.

  • You've always been one of my favorites Todd..You have the kind of talent that blows away most of the shit we have today A great inspirational talent!!

  • @myboylollipop09 - Great comment!

  • What welcome company!!!

  • jackwagons - that's great! WTF is a jackwagon? Is that like a fucking asshole? I love it, and I'm using it from now on.

  • Smooth so smooth, hello hello

  • UH lets not forget David Bowie!!! Please people enjoy the music. Its called theatrics. Performing, a stage show. Entertainment.

  • uh anyone remember Elton John back in the day?? And you want to make jeers about this guy and his feathers PPLLLEEEAAAASSSEEE!!!

  • I love Rundgren, that being stated this video makes me think he looks like a cross between Freddie Mercury and Marilyn Manson. Marylin Mercury

  • Yep..That's the Man. I fell in love with him...wearing WHAT I thought was a male-bird plumage thing. (The males have the brightest colors in the bird world..) Todd, you're still a "Hotie". Hope to see you in concert soon.....PS. You're family is SO TALENTED - Dude, you should be soooooo proud!

  • I always liked this song.It's a classic

  • wow whats with all the negitive comments seriously.....listen to the beautiful music jeeez...

  • (Always loved this song!) Rundgren was/is a true original that never comprised his image or music- the man clearly had tallent. Sadly, I don't think he ever received the recognition he deserved.

  • Come on people !! He just wanted to be a bird. STFU and listen to the great music he plays.

  • in regard to then way he is dressed and all these questions about his sexual preference. The way he was dressed was known as "Glam Rock"...Glam being short for "Glamor"......even Alice Cooper was dressing in gender questionable outfits and he was definately "straight".

  • @inkey2 Exactly...thanks for "straightening" everybody out.

  • excellent !!

  • Phosphor, why do you have all these false accusations saved as top comments.

The sound on this upload is good enough, and Todd is not gay. "top comments" should be changed

    "The DVD" sounds great BTW.

And Bebe Beuell (Playboy centerfold with a blue Rickenbacker Bass) was his girlfriend forever, and SINCE he's been with Karen (a girl) and he has a son named Rebop. Glam was in in the 70s, and hes glammed out!

RE; Slade, T-REX, Queen, KISS, Alice Cooper,etc... Its just part of the JOB.

  • Hey....who cares what he likes....this guy has talent and that's all that matters. Raised a great girl also that was not his.

  • I took this song "for granted" when it came out. Because I was just a kid, and there was tons of great music back in '73! But now when I hear this song, I realize how great it is. Plus, now it evokes nostalgia. All good.

  • This song is great. its is part of the fabric of my teenage years. it doesnt matter to me what sexual orientation the singer is.i'm sure looking back he regrets wearing the crazy outfit and makeup but that was the 70's and people wore crazy shit. years from now, people wlll look back and say we wore crazy shit. i love LOVE the 70's and 80's music. today s stuff cant compare. please stop being ignorant people.

  • Evidently John Wayne is a "queer" because he wore make up in his movies. Who knew. I'll let Sly Stallone and Sean Connery know too.

  • The fruit fly escaped from the jelly this day

  • The guy Liv Tyler thought of as Daddy (Her mom told her Todd was her father and he kindly agreed to take responsibility; liv calls him Dad and Steven Tyler is Steven. That saysloads.

  • Awesome....he actually pulled it off Live. Not many bands or singers can sing live without computer generated replicator assistance. Going way back to when you actually had to have REAL TALENT to get a gig.

  • Awesome talent! I always wondered why he didn't tour more... he's been on my bucket list since I was a kid! And regarding aaaredskin's comment.. he is man enough to raise Liv Tyler-who thought he was her dad until her mid-teens!

  • Come on people, Queen, Elton john, David Bowie, Then the 80's with the change in apperance. If the way a musician looks is all you see music is not your forte'

  • hi its me

  • Ok the sound is bad and he is freaky looking so if you don't like it do what I about to do. Go to another person.

  • i think this is where little miss GaGa got her ideas for costumes...

  • DELWARE COUNTY REPRESENT!!!

  • Im gonna guess todd was the G

aga of the 70's with talent

  • what??? I didn't understand his makeup...was it a halloween special? Love the song though.

  • @aaaredskin There's a good reason why you never knew that. You just lost 50% of your humanity quotient because you thought it was important enough to make a comment about without doing any research. But jackwagons like you don't care what other people think anyway, so, there goes 50% of any humanity you have left. Have you stopped drowning kittens and poisoning puppies yet?

  • @PhosphorDigital Sorry, didn't mean to offend.....I have always loved this song.

  • @PhosphorDigital Please try to get over your own magnificence for a few moments, pompous dolt.

  • @PhosphorDigital So what if he made a comment about his sexual orientation? Many of us still, and always will, believe that homosexuality is a perversion and disgusting. So what? Has nothing to do with our humanity or about drowning puppies or stepping on lizards. I believe homsexuality is a perversion, disgusting, and anybody who has those kind of feelings towards same sex should get counseling or something. IT IS A FUCKING ABOMINATION. ALWAYS HAS AND ALWAYS WILL.

  • @thugthumper1 The part that all you shitferbrains just never seem to get is that it is of absolutely zero significance, either way—and especially to people who hold no sway—who anyone fucks or what gender they are. That you even have a question about it, and that you might judge and condemn someone speaks volumes about the type of people you are. It reeks of the same disingenuousness as "Some of my best friends are [fill in the human attribute being debated here]." STFU & GFYS

  • Comment removed

  • @PhosphorDigital Dude your just as queer as his looks here. God take your theatrics where they belong. Are you done poising humans with your sick sense of words?

  • @aaaredskin He's not gay.

  • @aaaredskin He isn't gay but really is a very odd and self-worshiping kind of person -- which is why they make a big deal about him playing all the instruments...which sounds crappy. There are a group of people who worship Rundgren like a god despite him only having a few mediocre hits..like this one.

  • @aaaredskin ..........I am insulting that anyone would care if he was gay or not. Its a love song, and its also a great song so who cares if it may be addressed to a same sex relationship. I was around 7 years old when I fell for Todd.....and he is a wonderful tune-smith.

  • Political correctness just prolongs the pain man. Get over it. I'm defending the guy who made the queer comment. People are what they are no matter what you call them and people think what they think no matter what they really say. People should always speak their minds, that way we are all true to ourselves and don't have to pretend. That being said, I don't care what kind of person wrote the song, it's a good song.

  • @aaaredskin

He's not gut. He was one of the first people to do "glam rock". His wife had an affair with Steven Tyler and Liv resulted. She and Steven Tyler attempted to have a relationship. But ultimately, she was still in love with Todd Rundgren. She went back to him and they raised Liv for quite a while, until it became obvious that she was Steven Tyler's daughter.

  • @aaaredskin I'm a queer! :) but Todd isn't. :(

  • Extreme talent, yep he's most certainly trippin' on this take. lol, good times...bring 'em back!

  • Incredible! This is a great tune!! This guy was Elton John before Elton was Elton John. Look at the guy!!

  • Is it me or is this a pretty clear example of someone REALLY tripping out while they perform?

  • Hello it's me dee bunny rabbit on de peeaanoo

  • @gahloot Your A Fucktard.

  • @vegasmmp Stop it!

  • Some called him a freak - - - I called him a music genius!

  • @hotstuffandicecream freaky genius

  • Doesn't he look like the sister from Rosanne? Just saying.

  • what a beautiful song, performed by a wonderful and extraordinary musician whom obviously loved to make us feel special. Jon

  • i love love this song so much.wow its classy an amazing!!!!!always had always will.great video thank you.its before my time but love it!

  • She reminds me of Carol Drag Queen!

  • Marilyn mansons daddy!

  • Great job on the audio-fix!! Was just a kid during this era of music, but brings back alot of memories for me... Agree with the Lady Gaga comment, in that yep in the 70's there were alot of outrageous costumes/artists that have been forgotten about. Also agree with 'Bashing' not cool,, if U dont like -- dont look OR listen... simply Leave the page.

  • Wardrobe malfunction aside this is a good video of a great song by a talented musician. Brings back lots of great memories of that warm LP sound and real music. They still had the manufactured sound back then but not as prevalent as todays music business.

  • I think I've got the crux of the lyrics: 1. He WILL be stopping by for sex and 2. he will NOT commit.

  • @gahloot dislike. hes a human being and btw i wouldnt mind sitting on that piano bench without it being washed cause hes not a......hes not a what u called him:)

  • Dang Todd ! Did you bedazzel your eyelids? I guess this was during the Glam period.

  • It's about the music. Great live original classic

  • I Have To Agree With You,If You Look @ Lady CACA,She Looks As Though She Tried To Copycat Rundgren,BowieLooks,2Days Music Cannot Compare To The 70s,80s @ Least They Used Real Instruments....HELLO, Go Back To Your RAP-CRAP,Alot Of 2days So Called Musicians Borrow Mujsic Like This To Make Their Own Fuken Music,Copycats

  • This brings back 1970s and my childhood back. It was a much happier time than now.

  • GREAT VOICE!

  • @gahloot - Wow, I guess he was man enough for Bebe Buell, they were together long enough for Liv Tyler to consider him a dad and inherit his last name...

  • great song and performance

  • who he say he not want her to change for him.Not many like that. You meet then they always make you chang for them.Into who your not.

  • @7466309change Not sure he's singing to a she. Just sayin.

    Awsome!

  • @milominder ok yes I got that forgive me nieaveness.

  • @7466309change Just having fun

  • @milominder i kinda know is fine.

  • who would dare slag off todd?not many with such talent in the shitty world of pop music could even come close, mind your manners!

  • This song is such a brilliant composition! I never appreciated it until I learned to play it. It takes turns that I'd never expect in a song that sounds so together. It's complex but it sounds straightforward and beautiful. Musical elegance!

  • Still love this song! Awesome!!

  • Even the brothers respected this guy. Talent comes wrapped in all sorts of different packages. Bashing not cool. Carol king sound (agree)

  • @tbskms Wow! I never thought of it that way. I could totally picture Carol King doing this song!

  • HQ audio?! This audio sounds worse than my little pocket radio from the 70's!

  • @infinera06

I suggest you go listen to the audio accompanying the version of this video which has the highest hit-count, and which is the version I D/L'ed and tweaked.

    ====> The "rundgrenfan" version: youtube.com/watch?v=jsezr0qiFIc

My editing may not have made it sound perfect, but *THAT* version sounds like tin-can crap.

  • @infinera06 . You were a spoiled dick head in the 70s and continue to this day. Congrats you ungrateful turd.

  • @gahloot I wanna take you to a gay bar.

    youtube.com/watch?v=HTN6Du3MCgI

  • @PhosphorDigital You buying?

  • I absolutely love this song but am I the only one that thinks it totally sounds like a Carole King song?

  • He looks like a cross between Alanis Morrisette and Herman Munster.

Right after 2:03 he gives a look that Herman Munster used always do. : )

  • he's a really talented guy. great singer. but, man, he looks pretty damn strange in those feathers.

  • Fearless and brilliant. That alone makes him beautiful.

  • Todd has taken for granted that you just don't care...

Who gives a flyin' flip if he's straight or gay? This song effen ROCKS! He's amazing! THAT'S all that matters.

  • This is brilliant. Wow.

  • you know what dude is right I should not even responded to someone who is not obviously taking his medicine... I That Style of dress was in vogue at the time with, "glitter rockers." It should be noted he wrote this song for a Playboy centerfold who left him for David Bowie... Maybe that explains his appearance better than the Term Sodomist.

  • @kingobarstow

    >>>"…It should be noted he wrote this song for a Playboy centerfold who left him for David Bowie..."<<<

I appreciate the *spirit* of your defense here, but unfortunately, your substance as I've quoted is 100% fictional. Todd was about 16 or 17 years old when he wrote the song (And I'll be happy to be corrected on this...Respondents: please cite sources).

  • I guess he didn't read BeBe Buell's book.

  • okay, now don't dress like a falking drag queen in front of drag queen asshale! keep butt falking and cack salking all you want. do it indoors, retard.

  • Yeah people can rat on him and call him names but imagine how many records he sold back in the day.He put out some great music.

  • aliens eh? I'm against behavior. I'm against Todd's example. I have children and grandchildren who do not behave in homosexual ways, thank God. i'm against butt falking and bobo honking, and you're not. please stay away from my family, my sons are rough dudes Jack!

  • Birdman! Still a great song.

  • according to the confession of you own lips, so it shall be. what do I care about you? nothing. go to hell.

  • you can't understand proper english butt falk. i'm big on weanie crushing. what's the matter with you ears? full of come fag boy????

  • what things are doing? things to ensure a stay in torment. what are doing? what are you sucking? are you a weanie sucking little weanie destined for torment? you are not your behavior, stop but falking and be saved. stop weanie sucking and enter into paradise. this is as clear as I know how to speak. if you don't understand now, then you really are as stupid as you are ugly. lol. aren't I a hundred laughs? lol lol lol

  • @Robb9096 I don't know about a hundred laughs, but you sure seem to be big on weenie sucking.

  • This song has stood the test of time. It was surrounded by so many other great songs back in the day, I kinda "took for granted he was always there." But hearing it now--yup. He created a great song. Well done, Todd!

  • This is kick!! I never seen this video before! And I always liked this song!! Nice!!

  • I'm just glad he got over that little butt-falking thing he used to do! lol lol lol. there is hope for him afterall, it seems. God hates sodomy, not sodomists. this information is too high for many to understand. you for instance?

  • @Robb9096 Oh I understand, alright. I don't want to litter Phosphordigital's wonderful video with anymore of this stupid back and forth, you've already been given too much attention. I just want to say if Paradise is full of people like you, I'd rather be in Hell.

  • I stand firmly upon the pinciples that keep me alive. Poor Toddy, poor you! kiss kiss, big boy! lol lol lol

  • @Robb9096 Judgmental much? Cast the first stone, bible boy.

  • @Robb9096 By being a sodomist, I suppose you think he's gay? Not that it matters but Todd is married with a child, he was also married(I think) to Liv Tyler's Mom, she considers him her father. I'd like to say what a shame for you that you would feel this way about anyone who you think is gay.By the way the way Todd's look in the video is probably supposed to be "Glam." He's an artist he has a right to express himself anyway he wants to, we all do.

  • @Robb9096 Dude I don't get the sodomist thing ( Which, by the way ,is not a word) but Todd Rundgren is a brilliant ACCOMPLISHED musician and a wonderful song writer. I don't care about his sexual preference, or his soul for that matter. I like his music. Period. I don't need him to represent me to the world.

  • @mrtexline Thanks for your voice on the matter. Some folks like Robb9096 have their own agendas and can't help but overlay it everywhere they think their opinion will gain traction. I'll allow politico-/religio-posters ONE comment, so they better make it count. I could delete all the stuff like that, but I prefer to let people hoist with their own petard. It's funnier that way.

@Robb9096 "The prayers of the Saints ascending with you, will Petarr your entrances through heavens Portcullis".

  • @PhosphorDigital hi , nw, but it is "hoist on his own petard"

a petard being a bomb, which would sometimes go off prematurely

    thus "hoisting" the fuse igniter...

    it's from Hamlet

hoist their own petard is pretty cool though

    chrs

  • @ben909ben

Well, umm...thanks for the lesson, Ben, but I'm the kind of guy who does his research, and...

    >>>"The phrase 'hoist with one's own petar[d]' is often cited as 'hoist by one's own petar[d]'. The two forms mean the same, although the former is strictly a more accurate version of the original source...."<<<

...it's actually even earlier than Hamlet. (Correctify URL to go to my source) xrl. us/bkdx35

  • @mrtexline I think the word he's looking for is Sodomite. :-O

  • @mrtexline sodomite is the word

    and u are one...

  • @bgoldner1992 I have never seen someone so obsessed with homosexuals. Makes one wonder about your latent tendencies. Also, try using correct grammar and learn how to spell. People might take you a little more seriously.

  • @Robb9096 Hey Robby boy. It's your hell, YOU go burn in it. The rest of us have better things to do.

  • @Robb9096 Been waiting for the right time to call someone that name? I am not a well person, Myself I but dude they got a special ring in hell for people who act like you are now.

  • @Robb9096 What bothers me more about Rundgren is both that he murdered JFK and that he's an alien from a planet 1,983 light-years away wearing a human suit.

  • @Robb9096 It actually shows you how much it doesn't matter, because you were basing your opinion of him on his music and message rather than the way he looked or what you perceive to be his sexual preference. I say just care about people and don't worry about what you believe to be their shortcomings.

  • @Robb9096 I'm not sure what a sodomist is, or how you can tell he's one by the COSTUME he wore to perform in back in the early '70's, but he lived with Bebe Buell for quite a few years and then with Karen Darvin for quite a few years after that. Maybe you should contact one of these ladies and ask them if they were ever sodomized. Tool!

  • fantastic performance - Rundgren was so good!

  • The 70's were a strange time...Great music and fashion-wise, anything goes I guess.

  • love this song

  • RIP TEAM!!!

  • Are those wings?

  • Is he supposed to be a bat?

  • Marilyn Manson?

  • God forgive me, but I have always, always mistaken this singer in this song (Todd Rundgren) as the singer David Crosby of Crosby Stills and Nash. I can't explain at all whatsoever how I drew that conclusion. I feel really bad for that. After all these years, it's YouTube to the rescue.

  • @evolnieveilebi Don't take it so hard bro - I was once in a pool hall and Piece of My Heart by Joplin started playing and some guy thought it was Led Zeppelin.

  • Oh thank you SO much I LOVE THIS SONG and he has always been one of my favorites!

  • The original title to this song was "Hello I'm Queer".

  • I think Todd was packing a little fudge in this era.

  • wow, an actual musician who can play multiple instruments. a rarity these days

  • Haha! this get-up is Bebe Buell's doing! :-)

  • wow! his costume is awesome! He's one of the best~

  • Comment removed

  • Oh what a gorgeous man! He has got it all in the way of talent. Close your eyes and open your ears. Then open your eyes and enjoy the performance he has prepared for you.

  • Yeah, people think that Lady GagGag (I mean, Gaga), is some kind of pioneer in the way she dresses. Back in the day, Rundgren, Bowie, Kiss, and others, were wearing outrageous costumes, makeup, etc....long before Gaga was even a twinkle in her daddy's eye.

  • @777notw I was just thinking the same thing!

  • @777notw And most of her costumes are recreations of allot of these artists anyway.

  • @777notw Plus Grace Jones...She did all the props/clothing....back in the day!

  • @catzdogs1 You're right. I forgot about her...really was not into her music, though.

  • @777notw that is so true Gaga is not the first or will she be the last to dress like that thank god for the orginals that did it first.

  • Im pretty sure Lady GaGa has seen this video at least once.....mmmmmm ya think !

  • Great voice! Great song! Love the costumes!

  • or marylin manson's dad?

  • Hey is Todd Lady Gagas Dad?

  • i love Todd!! and this song. great video! thanks for putting this together!!

  • great tune....been a Todd fan since Initiation.....but even I must admit that the "get-up" is a little silly. I did like the Ankh guitar he used at one time

  • Todd is amazing..A one man band Incredible..To top it off this song is a classic,..and you didnt see talent like this...for all of you that have mixed feelings about him ...try and Respect him as an artist and a talented artist at that...Love this song the words speak to my heart ...Love It !!!!

  • @Miracle4908 well put.

  • i bet this song got this ugly guy a lot of pussy!

    ROTFL great song!

    >:]

  • @vmkSAVAGEGUY

    Talent trumps looks.

  • @vmkSAVAGEGUY As a matter of fact,it did,his gal pal at the time was Bebe Buell who fathered Liv Tyler. She had a fight with him and slept with Steve Tyler. They later got back together and he raised her as her stepfather. Though no longer together,Bebe was hot as Hell back then!

  • Love this version & also the Isley Brothers version

I think one has to just know how to sing this song

    it's a great song!

    love:)

  • Todd was simply a muscial genius of the day, He really was ahead of his counterparts! What so funny is that many of todays generation are playing songs that he has written but they don't even know it!

  • really like the runt.cool makup.good song.loved him with meatloaf!!!!!!!!!!

  • always have to enrich the audio using youtube . sounds good.

  • I sometimes perform live to prerecorded tracks as Todd is doing here. I often wondered if others did it and here I see one of the all time greats. Todd is definitely one of the greatest musical influences of mine. I thought the sound quality was a bit brittle. A parametric EQ could pull some of the offensive high end out without muddying up the track. I use cubase 4. Its a great program. Even the inexpensive LE version comes with a lot of plug ins. Thanks for posting.

  • @garkott1 Heya, Gene...Thanks for weighing in with your critique—I appreciate it.

If you want an easy way to hear what I did, grab the stereo audio from this and from the orig video I grabbed ( youtube.com/watch?v=jsezr0qiFIc ). Load both sets of tracks into any multitrack software, then A⇔B each set of tracks. You'll really hear the difference. Yep, I realize there are some bad peaks...my hearing is kinda trashed, I used crappy headphones, and this was my first attempt. Still, fun, & better!

  • @PhosphorDigital Sometimes I like to run the Sony G-11 converter intro through a Jazzmo R series entriptulator that's hooked up to a syphonic quadranger pushing 1000 kw of pure metrotonic reverb into a soundblaster 5000.

But then, sometimes I just listen.to.the.music.

  • @garkott1 Parametric Eq. in 1973?

  • @jamesdewer

Gene was talking about using a parametric EQ to further tweak the audio here. I did some re-equalizing from the original video I downloaded, but it could be better. Parametric EQ (right here in the year 2010!) would work well. (Oh, and BTW...George Massenburg was starting to use Para-Q in the early 70s, so it's likely Todd had it, and it was available to the TV networks back then—if they were brave enough to upgrade their systems.)

  • @jamesdewer sure....been around since the late 60s....analog ones
