@wlstjd64 Maybe the final cut but not enough to win. You have to consider that professional pianists like him play hundreds of concerts a year--they do not have the time and energy to cultivate on a certain set of pieces for the purpose of one performance. But for the competitors, who are normally upcoming pianists with much less touring time, the competition is their once in a lifetime opportunity. So in my opinion the most focused and energetic performances all take place in competitions.

@LudwigZhi I have to disagree in part. A master like Barenboim has such a deep understanding of music, maturity and technique that he has spent his whole life perfecting that it is simply not fair to compare his performances to up-and-comers in a piano competition. They will have a high degree of energy and focus and will no doubt be very compelling to listen to, but it's very unlikely they will achieve this level in their performances.
