I really like this song, especially the spoken part in the middle. Beautiful poetry that makes a powerful and poignant statement. I wonder if this part was written by the original songwriter, or was it added by the Sandpipers?

@achahei It was written by Argentinian Luis Aguilé who dedicated it to the Cubans who left their beautiful island after the rise of the Castro regime.
After my father returned from Vietnam in 1970 with a library of tape cassettes The Sandpipers became a staple of the families musical taste (I was 12 at the time). There lovely harmonic tunes have remained with me through the years and remind me of those happy days. I think the group and there music were very much under rated. Thank you Jim Brady, Mike Piano, Richard Shoff (and Pamela Ramcier): The Sandpipers.
It's been over 40 years since I heard this beautiful sad and tender song! thank you for posting it, All the Sand Pipers sing in spanish album was wonderfull, I wish I had it.
This has always been one of my favourites. I love to read the comments, especially on the music with beautiful lyrics and a lot emotion in it. Posting from Antwerp, Belgium, I'd love to have some contact with soulmates loving emotional songs. In Dutch:
i was searching...i searching...i searching for years ....this is the best version....in memoriam of my friend Pedro the greek that was my teacher in Spanish-Latin America culture and music.....but i dont agree that Fidel made everything wrong.....the history proved that.....
It's the best version for you and the only version for me :). But it's really beautiful... Thank you so much for sharing and thanks monre1949 for posting it *****
It's Fidel who caused songs like this to be written in the first place. No one would have left if he hadn't taken over. Please don't talk about what you don't know.
lets taulk please............ for the famous works and days of prominents mr/ladys=reagan,g.w.bush,thatcher etc etc...............Fidel was the leader over 60 years only in a small island....with a criminel blockade from the greatest of the world nation-neighbor.......if you dont want to speek about the above prominents leaders lets please.............. to speek about batista,s daughters of cuba............
@ShesBroadwayBound You are completely right about what you're saying of castro but I was under the impression this song was written in 1800 by Jose Marti. He wrote many songs about his lovely Cuba and how it missed it in his trips to spain (before Castro).
thanks a lot!! i've been looking for their album for the last thirty years!!! at least, i can view and hear this!!! bless the person/s who posted this on youtube. can this be downloaded for my personal viewing only?
i've been looking for sandpipers' album for the last 35 years, and was not able to find one; at least, the one who posted this is doing me a very, very good favor. thanks!!
Any person who feels 'lonely' in this 'material' world or 'literally' homesick would, I trust, be extremely touched by this song!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What happened to this world????????????, I (speaking for myself) can see nothing but hypocrisy..............

@Garpinator I thought it was written by Jose marti the famous cuban writer who also wrote the world wide famous " La Paloma".
coloresperanza1000 1 month ago
@coloresperanza1000 No. You are probably thinking of La Guantanamera, the lyrics of which are based on a Jose Marti poem.
