@MsSpoiltGirl, its about having hopes and longings but then life going wrong. She was happy once, and she had dreams, but she went through many tragedies and she lost everything she loved. The biggest tragedy being that her true love left her. Now she lives a miserable existence, but she still hopes he'll come back for her.

In all seriousness, though, people are wired differently. There are some who have the same opinion of the entire concept of musical theater, and they're not wholly unjustified, nor objectively wrong, just different.
