If you watch enough CSI you'll see that Grissom doesn't find a lot of things people say as jokes funny. Usually he has to get to know them first, which is why he and doc robbins can joke back and forth. He's so cool. When I saw the episode description saying "Grissom helps on the case" I was like "Wait...they can't mean..." Haha he's so cool.

My read on it is, she joked and the joke stalled because either he didn't get it or he didn't think it was funny (Grissom is, after all, of an age that he would've been sweating it a little, WRT the draft), which confused her.
