  • But did they play a music record on a gramaphone in the theatre to accompany the silent films in the early 1920s?

  • @mineowyn Typically the music for silent movies was simply performed live by an in-house musician. But of course there were always people experimenting (which is why I love this era of film history so much). According to my research, some very early films (1900s) used a gramophone for music, dialogue, and sound effects. Particularly in Czechoslovakia and India. But these weren't mainstream technologies.

  • "In the 1920's all films were silent."

    No they weren't. ;)

  • @GoldenSilents :P Hey, I said "EARLY twenties," not "1920s." Sync sound was invented in 1926, and I explain that part eventually.

You scared me for a moment, I had to watch it over again to make sure I didn't make that mistake. XD

  • @skeletonmeister 1927 actually was when the first sound movie was made.

  • @MariktheChao The Jazz Singer (first film with spoken words and recorded songs) came out in 1927. But a few short films that used Vitaphone synced sound came out in 1926, though they usually lacked dialogue (like the 1926 film Don Juan - sound effects and music, no words.) The process was invented in 1926, but they didn't use it to its full capacity until 1927.

  • @MariktheChao I figured that out after I was finished typing the comment so I didnt hit post. I dont know why the comment was posted.

  • this was a great video, it really helped me with a similar project that I'm doing.
