  • not that hard when you got all that equipment..

  • Very cool rundown. I definitely dig Chase Jarvis. One cool Kat.

  • Awesome shoot. Would love to see some post production tips one day

  • You prefer aperture over Lightroom?

I'm deciding between the two right now and am currently leaning toward aperture.

  • @dalmation257 aperture was more in use before. lightroom is now a lot more in use than aperture.

  • Can you tell us about the postproduction on this shoot ?

  • thanks for the tips, i like the lighting set up, soon as i get my second light, ill be working on my sandwich set up

  • What was the lighting ratio on the two soft boxes? Thanks great video

  • Hi Chase; great work!!. I´d like to ask you about the lights you used for this photoshoot. How much power are we talking about? Thanks

  • Hi, 2 quick questions..

What type of economic flashlight and softbox would you recomend best for outdoor shooting?

  • Now that is an awesome, straight to the point, information packed tutorial !!!!!

10'/10 ! for me, one of the best on YouTube Thanks !

  • a lot of production for just mediocre location images...

  • What software/technique do you use at the end of this video to pan in/out of the final images??

  • thats too much drama I think photos should be pure not artificial.

  • @sirajrizvi I think he made it pretty clear that the client had a say in the "Creative Concept" working directly with him to give their say in the feel.

  • shouldnt be using a macbook pro to shoot on location... :(

  • @kiashadowwave and that's because:

  • @Dreadfultime Mainly because TN panels reproduce color unrealistically and Macbooks have no and/or unreliable eSata compatibility.

  • @kiashadowwave ...why not?

  • those r some pretty NICE pics man!

  • those r some pretty NICE pics man!

  • Hi chase,

Would you please take a look on one of my underwater videos and give me your opinion. Most of the pictures here where taken some year ago with film camera, I bought a Nikon D300s with and Ikelite housing so I can improve the quality of the pictures.

Thanks for all your tips, I have learn a lot from them.

  • You think those girls are nice? Check out these: hotgirlsrus(D0T)TK

  • love all your vids. You said PS? Are the pics we see retouched slightly or would you say they are HDR, done with multi layers?

  • Thanks Chase!! Great stuff!!

  • Awesome video! I really appreciate you putting the time to create this video and teaching us all a little bit more about the steps of the Photography business; because there are many people who think that photography is just taking the pictures, and then what, how do you go from there? For people like me who actually wants to be a reputable photographer it's really helpful. Thanks!

    New Photo shoot!

    includes SUNSHINE by ATMOSPHERE

  • Awesome video. Thanks a heap for sharing. Great info and wow, shots looked very very cool!! Mick.

  • why do all of his shot looks like they're HDR???

  • It's because he uses light outside. When you use light to create highlights that surround an object, you get detail in all areas of the image, which is what HDR does.

  • 3 Months from Agency first contacting me. Then...

    Negotiations: 3 days.

Creative and Pre-pro: a week of sporadic but frequent contact.

Traveled one day (to San Fran), scouted same day, shot the next day (5 hour shooting time), traveled back the next day. Sent gallery for review to client, got edits and retouch notes in one week. Turned the files back around to them in about 4 days after that. Check comes 30 days later ;)

That gives me a better time line on the processes of photo biz !

  • I love that highly polished final image thats common for these promo images etc

  • Nicely done once again.

  • thank you... you the man... right on for sharing...

  • I like the "doll" skin of models. Is it produced by a 2 softboxes between models?

  • Great Camera. The Sony sensor inside the D90 does well.

  • I've been a fan of your work since american photo had an article of you back in 2008. I like the way your photographs have a very raw feel playing with colour and texture. I'm curious as how you establish this sort of look. I've been playing with sharpness and contrast of the photos but your depth far exceeds anything I could imagine. Any tips for an aspiring amateur?

  • Because 90% of the magic happens in camera "NOT" in photoshop. Beginners these days never seem to understand this and is the main reason why most dont get ahead. Those learning today seem to have this mental picture that to get that "Look" is a "One" Button" click in PS or magic PS action. When in Commercial work its a combination of many things executed in a balanced combination that works to make a "Look" . Which may or may not working in all situations. The pro knows how t use what & when.

  • It's funny you say that because picked up an old Nikon F2 and been playing with lighting equipment from my college(stole the code to the stuff from my roommate) and have started getting effects I wanted in my photo's. After that using a DSLR is a breeze and I dont do any (other the white balance since Nikon's such at it) post editing. It's nice getting want you want without wondering "is this going to work later?"

  • If you dont mind me asking Chase (your amazing at your work),

whats your opinion on the best way to get into

    photography as a career?

i mean like some sort of school or what?

  • you didn't mention the getting payed part!:D

    i loved the video!

  • It varies on how much the customer is willing to pay for your services, this determines the length of the photoshoot and also how much post-production work that is included into the image.

Also if you are a successful well known photographer you can get away with charging more.

  • For this particular shoot why did you choose the 24-70mm 2.8 if you were shooting at f11? Could a kit lens like the 18-70 F3.5 greated as beautiful images or is the glass in the 2.8 lens that much better? I ask only because I have the 80-200mms F2.8 lens that cost a grand and when shooting at 2.8 it looks like my 50mm F1.8 that I bought used for $80. Maybe you can create a list of "must have" lens for both proam shooters and pro shooters.

  • The reason being is that f/2.8 lenses stopped down at f/11 and kit lenses stopped down as well, will look almost identical. Professionals usually have fast lenses for available light without flash, he just happens to have a fast lens attached. Most pros carry a fast zoom, tele, macro, fisheye, and ultra wide as well as some primes.

  • Treykaiza: PhotoRepublic is on the mark here for the most part. We do carry 2.8 lenses because they give faster shutter speeds in lower light. There are other factors involved in lens selection as well. The professional lenses generally have faster auto-focus, higher quality glass, less distortion, and more durable construction in addition to the 2.8 aperture. FWIW, I too carry the 50mm 1.8. Sweet lens, and what a smokin' deal!

  • @treykaiza Optics quality!

  • @treykaiza I think a big issue is that they have a lot of negative space. They really don't need bokeh.

  • okey, thanks. the cd didn't help to much. So i had to convert all the raws into tiffs.

  • do you shoot the pictures in tiff or in raw? my ps CS3 doesn't support the raw pictures. it used to do it with the old d70s, but now with the d700, it doesn't work.

  • Always RAW. The plugin for the D700 should be released very shortly, if it hasn't been already. Check with Adobe.

  • well done chase + team

thanks that you share your knowladge and workflow with us

    greets from germany

  • Thanks!!!!!!!!

  • hi, when you said that you used aperture to watch the pictures directly. how did you make it possible to send the pitures right from the camera when you shot them?

  • Masc06,

Aperture 2.0 brought us an ability to tether to certain cameras, including the D3. You simply connect the camera via a USB cable and go up to File/Tether/Star Session ...

Make sure that you have a project open, and selected in the sidebar. You can have Aperture automatically place the images, in a specified folder, or store them in the library, and rename them too!

    Dartanyon - for Chase

  • Im lacking on my PS skills for doing manipulation like what was needed for this shoot.

How do you handle request that may not be right up your skill set as far as PP

  • Outsource it at first, then sink some time into learning it for yourself.

  • I'd actually like to hear more about the business side in a future video, believe it or not.

  • hi, nice video

i'm italian. Have u got any contacts here? have u ever been to work here?

  • Hey there. I've shot quite a lot throughout Italy - although not in the last 12 months. Are you subscribed to my blog (email or RSS)? When we need an extra set of hands or some contacts somewhere, I usually post something there first. ... Thanks!

  • That's an amazing job. Wish I done that too. Great gear, great conception and great photos.

  • So the video is 180 seconds... but in reality how much time does a project like this takes?

    Specially Postproduction?

    Thank for this neat video!

  • 3 Months from Agency first contacting me. Then...

  • Cool! thanks for the info...

  • A realy nice videoo but i would like to have seen more of the shoot and the set up.

  • wow so much knowledge in 3 and a half minutes.

so did you shoot photos of the people and then add more landscape to the right of the picture too all the pictures or just that one with all the people in it?

    cheers, lucas

  • The creative direction for the job mandated that we just create a panoramic for one of the images (one with the 3 golfers and their caddies). And for that image, yes, we shot adjacent frames with no strobes in the shot and then composited them together. The other images were not composites.

  • Which lens are you using at that shoot? Is it the Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8? If it is, what do you think about it?

  • Yes, it's the Nikkor 24-70mm 2.8. Although stylistically I usually shoot longer or shorter, when I DO need to shoot in that range, I love this lens. Super solid piece o' glass.

  • Nice, thanks for the video. It's really helpfull for us amateurphotographs to see how professionals works.
