He kept blowing a blood vessel in his vocal chords and was told by the doctor if he didn't have surgery he wouldn't have a voice at all eventually. So he had the surgery and took vocal lessons from the guy that Axle Rose took lessons from and is more knowledgeable about his screaming and what not to do with his voice.

When Matt went to Andrew Murdock and gave him the Sounding the Seventh Trumpet, he told him that the CD was all screaming, and that the next album they were going to do (Waking the Fallen) was going to be half screaming and half singing, and then the album after that (City of Evil) was going to be all singing.

coming from a vocalist. this guy is no where near COREY TAYLOR. sure he can SING higher. but if your a vocalist you KNOW that it is easier to sing higher.
