That white one was in our driveway. My father owned one of those. My mother was pregnant with me and she's sitting on the brick on the carport. Posing next to that 1963 Chevrolet.
I own a Riverside Red SWC with a Powerglide. Most people Love it. It was the Race car drivers that disliked it Mqueen. because the visability is poor out the back! I've got Z28's, Superbee 440 sixpack, Boss 429 Miustang and a Superbird...the SWC gets the most attention when I bring it to a large or small show!
I had a '63 Corvette in 1964. I had to chuckle at the commercial when the Corvette 'winked' at the girl with one headlight. That was actually somewhat of a problem with early Corvettes. Only one headlight would open and the other would stay shut!
I've heard that was an issue with the Sting Ray--they should have used a vacuum system instead of the electric motor. I noticed also that the hump over the transmission between the seats tends to get VERY warm LOL!
@JGMagoo yes it was --- i learned that it had to do with a leak in the pressure line to the lights and it was a fail safe option that a light would be open if a loss of air pressure.
The split window is so rare. most vette owners took it out right away. Now it is prob the most disired of all the 60 models. Foolish move to remove the split.
They take arguably the most attractive Corvette ever (certainly up to that point) and turn it into a twee Herbie-like creation intended to appeal to young women driving, what was that, a Nova? Chevy II?
You barely even got a look at the styling... madness...
Now THAT was a nice looking Corvette! Has CHevy ever considered making a modern interpretation of the 60's or even 50's Corvette? I think it would appeal to a lot of guys that grew up drooling over the old ones. Sort of how Ford made the retro Thunderbird but did a crappy job.
a 63' split window coupe is my dad's favourite looking car of all time. lol and the split window gave the car its value and some owners had theirs taken out! now, they're kicking their selves in the ass lol
Thats why it lasted only one year. Not everyone liked it. But Bill Mitchell @ Chevrolet liked it and he knew it added to the styling. In the long run, he was right. 1963 models command higher prices than equal 64 models. I think it was a masterpiece in design. The split window made it. Owners of '63 coupes can proudly say that their cars have "Backbone". I'd personally rather have a second generation convertible, though.
"Not everyone" is an understatement, JD. I recall most everyone simply hating the split window. It was so ill-received that Corvette promptly did away with it the following year. I think it's popularity today is wildly funny, thinking back to those days of loathing.
Not everyone removed the split window. My dad had one. 2nd owner (yes, in the 60s); EVERYONE loved it. Fun to drive and sculpture on wheels. The split was never a problem (the owerglide tranny and the power windows were,,,)
Who said anyone "removed" the split window? All I said that almost everyone heaved their lunch when they saw it in '63, and that Chevy did away with the split in '64. Those are the facts, Jack. That is all.
MQUEEN10 - axemann7000 said "most vette owners took it out right away." Others made similar comments. You simply said "most everyone" hated it.
Perhaps. I'm well aware that the '63 is the only year with the split window. But I recall many who appreciated the aesthetics of the split window when the car was made - and many still do.
Okay, maybe "hate" is too strong a word. Let's just say that the majority of people did not like the split window in the '63. I see them at car shows all the time now, and I still don't like it. It's a matter of taste, though, like you say. Carry on.
every corvette should do that when a hot chick walks by

Was'nt the big problem w/the split window poor rear visability? That would seem to be the biggest reason to eliminate it from the 1964 model.

People tend to love or hate the split window, there is no in between. I'm not fond of it, but I respect your choice.

Yeah, it must have been nice to have a Corvette where the headlight actuators actually work.
