thanks for uploading such great film! Wouldn't it have been better to leave Gambon alive a few seconds more? just to see his face. Nice film after all.
i love her outfit! And the part where the curtain closes is simply outstanding, it sends chills up my spine! Although the amazing impact of this film would just not be the same without the music.
Thank you so much for uploading!! Except for the couple missing scenes - awesome (but I guess that was due to copyright concerns). Great film, great actors, and powerful music. Thanks!!
@rustybonaparte Hon, when you don't have anything intelligent to say about a great work of art, it's always better to just shut up. Will save you the embarassment.
helen mirren says cannibal, cunt. the line is one of my favorites from any film as it ties the film together exquisitely. so i typed it in joyously and clicked post. way to wag your dick. cunts like you are the reason greenaway films are regarded as pretentious.
I love the colours in this movie, especially in the beginning, when everyone is sitting in the restaurang and just eating, reminds so much of a baroque painting... and Michael Nyman's music is just fantastic.
Spica represents all the boorish behavior of the greedy bastards on Wall St. that rule the world and have ruined the world economy. Class, culture, modesty and truth is dying out.
@1911prince Couldn't agree more!! Rabid consumerism is killing us as is the perceived idea of power coming w/wealth. Look at the health ins debate of the past yr: greedy CEOs of ins companies had the majority of the Amer public wrapped around their fingers, convincing them that they'd go broke if there was a public opt or govt funded public plan - have Canada or France or the UK gone bankrupt as a result?
Thank you Tommy for your response. At least there are a few of us still out there who can see what is going on. Keep fighting the corporate machine and think for yourself. Many, many CEOs deserve Spica's fate for their greediness.
Wow! I've forgotten how amazing this jewel of a film is. Thank you so much for posting a masterpiece to cinema! i was relenting to buy a used widesceen laserdisc of this, now i'm conviced.
I love how when I saw this initaially ebveryone sitting arounfd me way like 'die botch' when helen mirren shot lbert. He's such a hateable character. . what a fucking great film in every way.
Exerllent film thank you so much for posting. Such an opluent design, for me deffinatley Greenway's best. And love the ending so much "Cannibal" fantastic!
Though have to agree with comment from before ,,, how light is Tim Roth that he can be picked up like that !?!?! lol.
Even before they wheeled him in under the sheet I turned to my housemate and said, jokingly "She should totally feed him her lover's body." I'm not sure how predictable the ending was, or if I just struck lucky with my guess, but it sure is a powerfully horrific scene, and it brought out a range of emotions in both of us: horror, disgust and then amusement.
On a side note, I love how easily that bloke picks up Mitchel and walks out with him. It makes me lol...
One of the most amasing and overlooked films ever!!!!!!!! From the lush set design to an amazing score that unfortunately was written for a futebol tragedy. Absolute brilliance in all areas of film. Costume, Acting, Score, Set design, Cinematography, Screenplay. One of my favourite films and I love how she calls him "Canibal" then blast!!!!
What an extraordinary film. I just watched The Informers (awful) yesterday, and I'm struck by how this film and the work of Bret Easton Ellis run so close together. Both are grotesque and seek to comment upon the greed of the 80s (Reagan and Thatcher running so close together) but this has an artistry and a genuine sense of satire that Ellis has never had. Thank you so much for sharing.
thanks so much for putting this film on here... my name's georgina and when i was a kid my dad used to tell me to wash my hands etc and yell at me like michael gambon and that was the only reason i'd ever heard of this film. now that i've seen it i'm going to reccomend it to everyone i know, what ana incredible spectacle! i LOVED how their costumes changed in the different rooms that was very cool!
thank you zeeschef for sharing! what a treat. I saw this film 20 years ago when it was first released. what had originally drawn me to it were the costumes because I was an avid Galutier fan. Back then I was very puzzled by the phylosophy behind the film. 20 years on, I'm not 100% sure I understand all the symbolism... but as a work of art, it looks so fresh and contemporary. I can even say that it is a timeless masterpiece and one of the most powerful movies ever made.
@AvaPozen Gambon's performance in this film is one I rank w/the absolute best in cinematic history. He was as good in this part as Daniel Day Lewis in There Will Be Blood, Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight & Marion Cotillard in La Vie en Rose, roles where the actors showed NO trace of their own personalities.
Watching a portion of this made me relive certain criticisms of Greenaway very deeply, namely that his work is inherently a thoughtless badge that pseudo-intellectuals can wear (or could back when he was popular) and that all of his films subsequent to his shorts and The Falls are big budget imitations of aesthetic ideas at play there with progressively more bankrupt erudition in his scripts as time passed. I have to say, that I dislike his work the further it gets chronologically from his...
earlier stuff, but even here there are some very real and powerful aesthetic complexities, and much in particular has been made of the kitchen as Greenaway's center, because of it's fertility in color and purpose, and it's legitimate complexity in design compared to the I think intentional relative sparsensess of everything else, the dining room being elegant but vapid. I also think there is a very real meta level of Spica/film, where we hate this pretentious, elegant by exploitation, ...
abusive and intentionally vile man and think ourselves and Greenaway superior, although the vapid story (it was intentional) is obviously meant to reflect the pseudo sophistication dressed in a similar borrowed depth, that of Vierny, Nyman, Gaultier, layered on to something so empty and served to criticism and analysis (including that of Greenaway himself when discussing it) so vapid that the only legitimate implication is that both Greenaway and ourselves are Spica and naturally his film...

most bile filled in its treatment of his audience was his most popular and misunderstood as a simple tale of criticism of an underclass thug with upperclass pretentsions. I take a modernist approach to a modernist filmmaker, psychological interpretations of motivation are irrelevant here, at least if you are going to talk about Greenaway on his own terms. I enjoyed the experience of seeing this again, it was fun.
