@blueticecho Never having had any measurable amount, I'll bet my Ass that it can get you a very hot car and a very fast babe... who will leave you even faster when another Punter comes along. Probably with STD's!.
One of my faves. The thing that strikes me when listening to it now is: Take a look at the current Billboard 100. Can you name ONE artist on it that you think would be likely to sing (let alone write) lyrics like this, with these same sentiments?
I didn't know this famous rock group did this country song. It had first been a country hit about ten years prior. Joe Red Hayes stated that this song was composed of things his mother had told him, over the years. Jack Rhodes owned a studio in Mineola, Tx where Red Hayes cut his version. Then Porter Wagner covered it for the big hit (I beleive). Hayes wrote a lot of fine songs after he departed Mineola for Odessa, TX. He also played in several famous bands including w/ Hank Thompson & H. Nix.
I forgot to mention before, but, these pics are great!Well done! Was this released? I was 14 in 65 and sure cannot remember this at all.Kinda strange for a rock band to do country, wasn't it?What beautiful harmony!
Porter Wagoner robbed.

This is great. I had no idea they experimented with country this early on. Sounds more like a 67 or 68 song. Regardless, thanks for posting!
What a great message, even moreso today, than in 65.

What's with all the pictures of douchebaggery, i doubt the song was literally about acquiring wealth.

There's a guy named David Fenley here in Texas that has an incredible version...check it out on Google.

Actually this song was written by my grandfather's father. My great-grandfather sold it to Porter Wagner.

Who wrote this ? what was the original ?

The original was sung and written by Porter Wagoner. The Byrds cover is much better with their unique harmony skills.

@WolfieVilans Nobody's denying that, but this song just relays and reinforces that it doesn't buy you peace of mind.
