@hermanwahsletn sad thing is i understood almost everything you said and im only in spanish 1.
i really like this! good song too! ok i have a spare set of headphones without mic and a small mic from some older one! i saw that you soldered positive to positive ans so on but my headphone wires has 4 wires inside the jack cord! so i was wondering if the mic positive lead goes to positive of left earphone wire and negative from mic goes to negative of right earphone wire negative?
Unfortunately there are some problems with text on youtube - it appears one day and disappear the other. The text says that the connection for the headphone is from the top:
left, right and ground. If you have four wires in the headphone cord, use your a 1,5 V battery to find get "the phase" right.
Look at the microphone, the red wire is the "hot wire". "Hot wires" are connecter to the positive point.
Great video! I had trouble to get 4 contact audio connector, so i remaked 3 conntact connector to 4(really hard job). Finally i got 4x2 sm thing with connector for ipod on one side and 2 holes on the other side(for mic and speakers). Respect to you.
Best of luck, ket450! I never throw an electrical components away that works. In the future when you buy a computer, the computer itself is the spare part.
Excellent ket450! I´t a great pleasure to do something yourself. I use my microphone when I sing in in a choir - the iPod touch is a real small recording studio. If you don´t have a choir you can make one by means of the free "StudioApp lite".
At the time I made this video there was no microphone available on the market and this video is a hint for anyone with some technical skill and who can handle a soldering iron.
As I mentioned before not just any microphone will do, it must be an electret microphone. I am very happy with my mike and I´m not going to buy any microphone with headset in a shop. My mike is just fine!
The connector comes from an AV-cable designed for my old Sony video camera. With a pear of pliers I cut this cable and split the four wires. The blue box is the case of a relay - any box will do. I drilled one hole on the top of the box for the microphone connector, a female RCA and another hole on the side for the stereo headphone connector. I soldered the two wires to the RCA connector and the three wires to the stereo headphone connector.
Since one wire is shared, a short piece of wire is required. The two connectors were tightened inside the box.
The microphone was connected (soldered) to male RCA connector. The black part between the microphone and the connector i a crimp tape. If you put the soldering iron under the tace it will crimp and it also becomes less flexible.
1. The microphone signal input is also used for the remote control of the iPod thoch.
2. The iPod touch needs a certain current to detect if a microphone is connected or not.
If you connect a resistance - ca 8 kOhm to the input, iPod touch thinks that a microphone is connected. An interesting thing is that you can also put this resistor in serial with the microphone in order to reduce the signal strength from the microphone.
Remember that iPod touch delivers 2.73 Volt to the electret microphone. If you try to connect a microphone which should NOT be powered, try to connect a capacitor of let´s say 10 microFarad in serial with that microphone.
hello, i am trying to do exacactly the same but whit a shure mic, cause i want outstanding sound quality, but when i plug it, the ipod doesent have signal, but when i do it whit cheap mic it works, will i be able to do it whit my shure mic?

Because when I measured my the sleeve on my TRRS, it has no voltage at all for the mic.... so it doesn't work.

How to do - step 1:
The connector comes from an AV-cable designed for my old Sony video camera. With a pear of pliers I cut this cable and split the four wires. The blue box is the case of a relay - any box will do. I drilled one hole on the top of the box for the microphone connector, a female RCA and another hole on the side for the stereo headphone connector. I soldered the two wires to the RCA connector and the three wires to the stereo headphone connector.
hermanwahsletn 3 years ago
How to do - step 2:
Since one wire is shared, a short piece of wire is required. The two connectors were tightened inside the box.
The microphone was connected (soldered) to male RCA connector. The black part between the microphone and the connector i a crimp tape. If you put the soldering iron under the tace it will crimp and it also becomes less flexible.
hermanwahsletn 3 years ago
How to do - step 3:
I connected the microphone and the headphone to the box tho check the functionality before I filled the box with a two component glue.
You can also skip the two RCA connectors and put the microphone inside the box. The RCA connectors enables me to test different microphones.
