England's third best city. Or maybe the fourth or fifth. Or perhaps a few places down. Anyway, I'm fairly sure it's a city at least. Isn't it? ~ Mayor of Birmingham
Located in a huge bomb crater somewhere in the lost lands of the Midlands, Birmingham is where the people of England go to die. Inhabitants are required to serve at least five-nights a week in the underground Utterly Butterly mines (pronounced "Utter-lie-butter-lie-moynes" in their yokel tongue).
Its a worthless pile of dog mess and I'm ashamed to even call it a city. Why don' t we just nuke it and use the resulting crater to harbour the mess for the rest of the "civilised" world ~ Gordon Brown on Birmingham

The least friendly city you've ever lived in? Either you've not lived in London or you have a cockney accent. If someone slagged off my city / accent and they sounded like Bianca Jackson, I'd be annoyed too.
a banana republic city, with nationally laughed-at architecture, poor road structure and public transport and a high level of unpleasant immigrants. No I have nothing against other nationalities just against ppl who behave badly; and brum has those in abundance :( if u like brum try living in the centre of it for 14 years is all i can say lol
no insutl to birmingham but for the secound largest city in the UK its just a mess and just nothings really nw only od building here and there its grotty and scruffy u seen manchester leeds sky lien and there alot smaller then birmingham but lweast they have somemt to show
I don't think this video shows Birmingham skyline at it's best and there are better vantage points than this. As for being scruffy it won an award for the cleanest city centre in Britain last year!. Manchester just shouts a bit louder but Brummies are more reserved in this regard.
Infact Manchester was in a list of the top 20 worse places to live in Britain on CH 4.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
WHAT a HOLE. I went to the university as an exchange student in 2004. Its just such a fucking hole. I have even been to mogadishu and I gotta tell you that at least had a lovely beach.......WHAT A FUCKING HOLE. The Luftwaffe had the right idea back in the 1940's when they leveled the place.
pacornerpolska- are certain sections of the city centre that are attractive such as Brindley Place. Im from Sunderland (we don't have canal's here) so I find that pleasant. Certain cities have reputations which are a bit unfair; Bradford, Sunderland and Hull are good examples- they all suffer from a 'backward' image but having visited all three I believe they all have something to offer. Regards*
Im visiting Brum tomorrow. I love the second city but I wish more of its residents would sing its praises more often. I think there is more civic pride in Manchester and Liverpool.
I just gotta say ive been reading some of the comments on here and read your discussion with another youtuber, well I agree with all ur points about not judgin a city etc, ive been to Birmingham and I thought it was a lovely city, obv I havnt seen loads ova than the city centre but that was enough in itself, its got beautiful shops, it is an extremely clean city centre, very multi cutural, lots of trendy smart individuals and had a gr8 atmosphere, wud love to visit der again sumtime :D
bigbroeye- thanks a lot for your reply. Brum has a lot to go on. Of course, its not faultless. Id like to see the wheel back, but all in all its a great place.
that is because brummies know that they're home town is a squat....i know, i grew up here and still live here...yes it is still a squat, but so are many places in England.
England is over-rated really, lets face it we live in a bit of a shit hole...so we just have to make the best of a bad job.
5EB1987- What are you talking about! This country is not a shithole. Im not saying its faultless but compared to some places wer'e in heaven. Really , England or Zimbabwe? England or North Korea? England or Iraq? If theres anything wrong with this country its that its full of whiners like you. We are among the most priveleged people on earth. And as for Brum, what are you achieving by running your city down? Actually don't answer that- I don't want to encourage you.
Just because a place is not zimbabwe/korea/iraq does not means it is not a shithole.(Comparisons are odious, especially like with unlike)
As this is a video about birmingham i thought i would air my opinion on the place :) what would i be achieving if i sang its praises? i am just giving my opinion of brum as a balance to the comments which say its a great place. Like brum if you like, but believe me when i say there are many reasons not to :(
5EB1987- Of course youre entitled to your opinion but my point is if you think Brum is so bad why don't you do something about it. Why don't you try and get elected- and influence change in the problems Brum has. I just think with complaining there should be action.
I agree, and I'm involved with all the all the usuals, youth groups/neighbourhood watch/community meetings. However, sadly the city's local government is corrupt and irresponsible..so local government would be a difficult channel to try to use effect change...the electoral commissioner has compared brum council to a banana republic, with fraud cases that would "disgrace a banana republic"... not very promising. so u see one 19 year old in brum is gonna have a hard time changing things :(
5EB1987- Well I genuinely commend your working with those groups, and I apologise if I unfairly misunderstood you in that regard but ive travelled enough around the UK to know there are many worse places than Brum. There are areas it can certainly improve. The tourist information point on New Street isn't great and I think the wheel should return. Its also not great at selling itself though I think it has a lot to promote. May I ask whereabouts you live? Birmingham is a big place.
I agree there are many worse places in the UK, of course, and brum has huge potential, but this is quashed by the local gov. etc... On the suject of the wheel...The ICC is one of the nicest buildings in the city, and Centenery Square is one of the nicest parts of the city, when it does not have a slightly tacky looking ferris wheel, taking up space, not making much profit, and consuming a bonkers amount of energy 24/7. Quite glad its gone tbh :) I live just by Five Ways if u know it btw
Another thing.. :) The city's image is not very creative or attractive, new buildings going up in the city are cheap, poorly designed and generally disappointing. I only know this as my brother is an architect who has worked on projects within london, edinburgh, and brum. Brum's projects were laughed at by all the architects/visualisers/manager involved..it is clear how much money is pocketed by the council..when huge amounts are allocated to projects.....(cont)..
and then (for example) the cheapest possible buildings are produced...ie: orion building/radisson SAS hotel etc. Where are them pennies going i wonder?? :( no one in brum seems to have noticed yet.
Look at all your comments lol ...... Get something els to take your frustration out on .. Go outside and say this to the people of birmingham .. Go just try it.
The Birmingham Liberation Army , targeting those in the media who mock us and our city. Don't waste any of your money on loud mouthed egomaniac prats, the papers they write in , the shows or the television programmes they appear in.
i love birmingham. we have history.plus one of the most famous football teams in the world aston villa.and we had e l o .one of the best groups.vancouver cant be that great. who they got.
I grew up in Birmingham, but you don't realise the scale of the city centre till you get up high. I remember being high up in the Hyatt Hotel down Broad Street as a teenager and being shocked at the amazing views. Is it ugly? Well it's certainly a bold, big, brash, industrial city - but there's so many iconic, landmark buildings like the BT tower, the Rotunda, the old ATV building, and Beetham Tower that you certainly can't say it's boring. Good video. Made me miss home, though...
What an utter mess! I think you were looking into a toilet bowl when you filmed this and the skidders were as long as the M6!!!
I've never seen such a dump, I really haven't! I had to get the Jayes Fluid out when I saw this video from the vomit all over the screen! Birmingham is the biggest fucked up shithole in the UK, every twat who resides there deserves to be shot or crammed into a nuclear reactor and dropped on Iraq!
Birmingham has been the second city for decades in terms of size, strategic and industrial capacity, you really think that that will change.GET REAL manchester, for every poxy building you erect we've got five, city of a thousand trades, why do you think it's called that???
mogypliptus- Although I can see positive things about Manchester, you're completely right. Birmingham is, and allways will be the second city. A lot of people confuse Greater Manchester with the city. The city of Birmingham alone has over a million people. The city of Manchester is just over half that.
I love Brum but I think Manchester has been busy at trying to claim the title. Brum shouldn't be complacent- they should bring back the wheel for a start.
Brummie accents only came about in the 1900's as a result of communication around heavy machienery.....Sadly Shakespeare didn't talk like he had a frontal labotomy.
Great choice....another city thats better than Birmingham, just like Montreal, Quebec city, Calgary, Abbotsford. You get the Idea. Try comparing Toronto to Birmingham, You guys don't even have a skyline!
Thats true; they copied Margret Thatcher and shut down all the mental institutions and let all the crazies out to run riot. What about Lozells and Handsworth!! Full of homeless people and they had a RIOT last time i was there!. They segregate the ethnic minorities alot in England and its like they ghettoize them.
Its just such an ugly place buddy,,,seriously. I think deep inside you know it too.
I don't think they segregate people i think immigrants go to where the housing is cheapest.I think if you head out west through Broad st, Five ways,Edgbaston,Moseley and Harborne and into Bournville you would get a different picture of the place.
I do enjoy it,i live in a £350,OOO home in Moseley where we can all spell correctly and speak with an accent Shakespeare would be proud of!.I have a successful job in town and wouldn't want to live anywhere else!.
cont... numerous museums and art galleries including the Barber Institute of Fine Arts, Back to Backs open museum and Ikon Gallery. Birmingham has been home to names like JRR Tolkein, Duran Duran, Joseph Chamberlain, Jasper Carrott and Cat Deeley to name a few. It is one of the most visited cities in Britain and was shortlisted for European Capital of Culture. Birmingham is home to the world- recognised Cadbury's brand and has a number of ongoing commercial developments. Not bad for a shithole!
I love the way that you list JRR Tolkein, Duran Duran, Joseph Chamberlain, Jasper Carrott and Cat Deeley all being from Birmingham. They all have one thing in common too------THEY ALL LEFT!!
Monthagny- OK, I can see you are not a fan of Brum. I have failed in pursuading you its not the shithole you think it is. You are entitled to your opinion. I am guessing something bad happened to you in Birmingham and as a result of this you have decided to dismiss the whole city. As you can see there are plenty of people here that do like Birmingham, so I won't bother responding anymore to someone that doesn't.
I used to live in this city before I moved out to Vancouver. It has got to be the worst looking....dirty,,,smellyest,,,grubby stinkyest,,,ugly oh god so ugly!!! city. It is like the whole city is one big ghetto!!
I think your comment is unfair as this city has won awards for the cleanest city centre in Britain, has more trees than any other city in Europe and many of it's new buildings have won international awards....To be honest i love the place and it's people!.
Compare this city with any city in Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Spain.....Its just God awfull. The architechture SUCKS!! It smells awfull and there is 0%, I MEAN NOTHING in terms of scenery, no mountains, now waterfalls, nothing.....Fuck all to do here!!. Its as bad a Newark in New Jersy. Manchester is actually quite nice, so is Brighton and Edingburgh in Scotland, The UK does have some really nice cities I admit. Its just this place.....ITS A HOLE!!!
It's not perfect but your comments are over the top!.Did you walk around the canal distict, have you seen the NEW Bull Ring. The Jewellery qtr is full of charachter and has been put forward to be a world heritage site.
Sutton Park is the biggest urban park in Europe and also in the south of the city there is the Lickey Hills country park.Brum has the lowest crime rate of all the British core cities. If you haven't been for a while you should google it and see!.
I lived there......Its awfull. Manchester is alot nicer. i don't think size of parks is enough to lift it outta its trough. The only cities as bad as birmingham are a few cities in Poland and the Baltic states.
I just did a google map search for your location Orem and all i could see around N&S Geneva rd was scrub land vacant lots and scrapyards!...I somehow think that Bill Clinton won't be paying you a visit!.
Monthagny- OK so you may have seen more, but if you can't think of anything good about Birmingham, then you have not really seen Birmingham. I cannot stand people who are so negative. If you don't like Brum why comment on this video and annoy those who do. Im not saying its the best city in the world but it does have a lot going for it. Travelling a lot in some cases (ie you) doesn't allways make people more open minded. And the cities you quoted weren't blitzed in WW2. Back your criticism up...
I visited Nagasaki in Japan back in the late 1990's and that was BLITZED!! for sure. Its way more picturesque than Birmingham. Ok; Toronto is not a nice city by all acounts either, but when you compare it to Birmingham...WOW its so much better!!
Birmingham is on a par with cities in Eastern Block Poland or some Baltic states.
I actually agree with Monhagny, to a point. In fact the first thing I thought of was: Warsaw. I have been to Birmingham, many times in fact as I used to study in Coventry. It's a nice city, don't get me wrong, and full of life... but beautiful it most certainly is not. I don't think it ever has been to be honest. But hey, Rome wasn't built in a day either and Brum's improved so much in the last twenty years that I am speechless.
pacornerpolska- I am not against criticism of Birmingham. And you're right; its not known for beauty, but it does posess one of the cleanest city centres in the UK. I was in Rome last year; its a fascinating place and a great city but Birmingham is actually a lot cleaner. Rome is covered in graffiti and theres too much rubbish lying around. The issue people seem to have with Monthagny is he is SO cynical- won't show any compromise and if you look, is resorting to petit insults.
I wasn't trying to run Brum down, believe me, I understand the predicament - I'm from Bradford, a city that suffers a similar (worse) reputation to Brum. My only point was that it does have a certain Eastern European ennui about. It's the wide roads and concrete, I guess. More a product of its time than anything else. There really wasn't an insult intended.
pacornerpolska- its fine; I don't get insulted easily- its just some of the things Montagny was saying were uncalled for. There is a lot of concrete in Brum- this may be due to the fact it was heavily blitzed and so many pre-war buildings were destroyed but I think that can be said about many British cities. I was in Bradford last November; I like the place- I don't think a city necesarilly has to be beautiful to have appeal. However Bill Clinton described Brum as beautiful and there cont...
Erm...... Vancouver for a start, and then there is Auckland in New Zealand, Salt lake city, even Toronto, Cape town in South Africa, Marsailles, Vienna.....The list goes on and on.
Yes cities may be built within mountain valleys such as the examples you gave but are there full scale mountains within city boundaries? Maybe there are, but it is rare. And why does a city need a mountain to be attractive?
It makes the city featureless....there is no nature, planting trees just does not make any difference. Birmingham is just so mediocre... What makes Biringham such a chronic town is that its dull too. Ask people what stands out; they will just say 'Bull Ring'- great dude...the best thing about your city is a shopping mall!!.
There is a lot more to Birmingham than the Bull Ring. This is the city that has hosted a G8 Summit, Eurovision, not to forget Crufts and the Clotheshow. It has the lowest crime rate of major British cities and has historically been a centre of great ingenuity, not only with the Lunar Society but as the 'city of a thousand trades'. Sarehole Mill won BBC 'Restoration' and there are miles of picturesque canals and venues such as the NIA, Birmingham Symphony Hall and NEC. 3 Unis,cont...
Where do you live? Ever been Birmingham? It's not that bad you know, it's got the same sort of stuff as London but it's smaller and people have a silly accent. I've lived in both and if you live in the south i bet you're life is no more exciting, you just pay alot more in tax and house prices
there is only 1 thing rong wid brum and that is the fact that we have birmingham city as a footie team AVFC man and by the way manchesteer suks willies
Im proud to be from birmingham (just not pround of birmingham city) avfc but anyway manchester cant out do birmingham we are bigger we have a bigger population and o we are more famous because we was a main city in WW2 all brummies should be proud of here im just curious 2 MANCHESTERS GOT NO LANDMARKS o wait ur 2 footie stadiums birminghams got 3/4 we got BT tower, bullring, Victoria fountains, BM & AG we better then you although we are gettin rid of a load of our land marks like the wheel
samdan93- I agree, although I am not from Brum I love the place. I don't mind legitimate mature criticism but some people are so negative without even giving a good reason. It really annoys me because I have been to most major British cities and I have genuinely found something good about them all. I can't stand ignorant negativity about any city.
I had the misfortune of growing up in this so called 'diverse' shithole. Luckily I went to a good school and avoided most of the shit but I have several friends from my youth who are dead as a result of the drug infestation that has ravaged this city thanks to our ethnic friends residing in areas such as the posters name, Saltley. The city is awash with smack and crime and we have diverstity to thank. Thanks for killing my city !!!
It is the fact that most people are afraid of it's massive ethnic population, most negativity towards Birmingham is due to it's 40% + ethnic population which in my eyes is just plain wrong, we live in a multicultural society and Birmingham is a beacon of that, but that said looking at the regeneration plans for Birmingham in the near future around 2012 it will leave all other cities well behind but it is inevitable the cities to logistically and economically important for the UK
I think that most the negativity that is thrown towards Birmingham has nothing to do with how it looks or it size, it's a huge city with a massive population which dwarfs that of Manchester, Liverpool or Glasgow in fact it's twice the size of them and culturally it is internationally better known as well not only in high art but in popular culture as well with such bands as UB40, Duran Duran, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin .etc., it is also now Europe's new shopping capital.
Not really, I'd have to disagree with the cultural side and I take an outsider's (southerner's)view. Manchester had a very strong renaissance which was pretty much triggered by the punk movement of 1976. From then on, know one really had to look at it purely from LS Lowry's eyes.
There was the likes of The Smiths/Morrisey, Joy Division/New Order, the Stone Roses, Buzzcocks, Oasis, Happy Mondays/Black Grape etc. Manchester has Granada TV (now pretty much in control of ITV) and has the longest running regional soap - Coronation Street. More regional TV comes from here than Birmingham and even the Bernstein brothers said that Manchester had a stronger identity - the main reason they set up Granada there.
Don't forget that they also had the Commonwealth games, the first ever super club (the Hacienda) and a whole wealth of famous local actors, Christopher Eccleston (Doctor Who, etc.), Jane Leeves (Frasier), Marsha Thomason (Lost) to name but a few.
I really love Birmingham because I admire the car engineering industry that originated here, and the people are generally friendly. It has excellent links to London and the rest of the UK and I for one would find it hard to move away from it, but culturally as far as arts and music (especially music) it still has a fair way to go.
One thing I do notice is that the commercialisation is starting to really unbalance an already delicate arts and cultural scene. The Oasis Markets is shutting down (once a student favourite) for yet another office/apartments scheme , The Custard factory has now decided to go up its own backside - although I think it was a victim of its own success.. C'mon people Brum needs more of a maverick feel to it.
yeah! i admire birmingham's city center and skyline! there are loads of plans for new skyscrpers which they should finish building before 2009 or 2010. all quite a lot higher than the new holloway circuis tower!
incase you didnt know, there is a massive building programme going on now in the major cities not just birmingham. leeds manchester liverpool birmingham will all look like american cities by 2012 when all the first phase of work is done. each city will have buildings in excess of 65-70 storeys.on an honest view the real 2nd most important and biggest size/population in the UK is MANCHESTER. birmingham cant sell itself like manchester can.
Birmingham is second city because it's population is over one million,Manchester's population is less than 500,000.Second city status is always based on population not how a place sells itself!.
due to 1974 boundary changes, manchester decided to count only the city centre which has 450,000 pop. the suburbs are run by different councils. its like aston lozells edgbaston mosley and sparkbrook not being called b'ham. ive lived in both places and i can tell you manchester looks feels and is actually the bigger place. its a shame because i am from b'ham!
Birmingham had second city status before 1974 and has been bigger than Manchester since the 19th century!.You can walk from Manc city centre and in five minutes you enter another city Salford......Mancs not that big it just thinks it is!!!!!!!!!!.
i am a brumie and i tell you you had better check your own facts Manchester is one and a half times the size of my home town. it has been since 1776 when it wsa the third biggest after liverpool! My home town is crap
The county of greater Manchester has two and a half million population just like the West Midlands county. The City of Manchester has less than 500,000.I think your getting mixed up between city and county.
Manchester came in the top 20 of the worst places to live in Britain on channel 4 and has twice the crime rate of Brum....i know where i'd rather live!.
in the 6 years that i was in manchester i did not see or here of any crimes. during that time i visited home approx 15 times and was mugged twice, my car broken into and almost carjacked on hagley road! only a passing police car saved me. in mcr the place seems more richer and well off and not so gloomy as home and in bham there is too much gun and knife crime
There's crime in all cities i aint saying there's none in Brum. Check wikipedia Brum has the lowest crime figures of all the british core cities. You prefer Manc i prefer Brum thats ok by me but don't slag the place off when it don't deserve it!.
that figure is the city centre figure. go and check the place out. birmingham had better move on up or else we will end up like leicester, coventry or nottingham, just another minor city in the uk
Figure's are not given for city centre's....i work for Birmingham City Council, you are a arguing with the wrong person!.I've backed all i've said with information on the internet that anyone can read!. Birmingham's population is twice as big as Manchester's and Birmingham is the second biggest city in Britain...why can't you accept the facts?.
As far as being gloomy the city centre won an award for being the cleanest in Britain!,it also won an award for it's floral displays.
I have been looking for this debate on youtube for ages! The cities I am most connected to are Belfast, Sunderland and Wolverhampton. I have nothing against Manchester but secondcity11 is completely right. If we consider the title to be based on population then Birmingham (pop approx 1 million- just the city!) is about twice the size of Manchester (pop about 547,000). The Greater Manchester conurbation cannot be classed as the city. Birmingham is the second city and allways will be!
rikkituffis- with respect, that comparison is not accurate. Greater Manchester comprises of towns like Oldham, Stockport etc, which combined gives that 2.5 million population. They all have distinct identities. Aston, Lozells etc are districts well within the city boundaries of Birmingham. A better comparison would be places like Walsall and Dudley being part of the West Midlands, but not Brum. Look at the pink ordnance survey maps available in Waterstones. They are a good indicator of this.
I've been away from the UK for the past 4 years. Checked out Brum after returning this year. I was surprised at how it has improved. Some great new buidings and clean! Sadly New street station is still awful.
However... Every single decent building in city centre has a blue plaque on it saying "partly sponsored by the European Union" and thats development money set aside for poor places. At the time Liverpool was the poorest spot in the EU. So England gets help to clean up their city centres.
This year Birmingham was voted as having the cleanest city centre in Britain, won a gold award for it's floral displays, had 200,000 attend an arts festival, has more trees than any other city in Europe and the biggest urban park in Europe (SUTTON).The only smelly thing on this page then are the comments of some uneducated bigots!.
I'm a brummie and I am proud of where I live. I dont understand where all this brummie/ manc rivalary is coming from. It's normally those fucking londoners slaging us off especialy our accents. Like theirs is so great... paand a bannanas? cappa tea? RICKKKY?
I thought the point of this site was to comment on peoples videos etc..instead it would appear it is a noticeboard for racial discrimination!!Like the vid. I live in Brum &work rest and play here.made friends here. Its become my second home and its been good to me.I lived in London for 14 yrs,and prefer Brum.Birmingham is up and coming..the bullring, shops, market, people, social life...more housing..Brindley place to name a few.
birmingham is a shithole...whoever designed the new bullring should be f****d with a broken bottle....yes i am a brummie who loved brum 20 years ago..
im going to play devils advocat here,as im not from any of the cities but ive been to both, and what ive looked into is that birmingham has a much bigger population city wise,it absolutely dwarfs manchester no arguement,my feelings for manchester is that they live off manchester united to much when they have got a great music scene to go by, birmingham is fantastic for any form of nightlif
vgt127- I too am unbiased (I was born in Belfast) and have visited both cities a number of times- They both have a lot to offer but Birmingham is, without dought, the second city. However I think it has got complacent in selling itself.
i worked on the constuction of the radison hotel, Installing the glass. infact thats probably me in the cradle at 0.51, also did the rotunda which in this vid is still without the glass, nice to see brum from a different viewpoint, usually see it from across the road
manchester is well better. birmingham is full of blacks infact i went an hour without seeing 1 foreigner !!!! i dont wish to go bk to the city centre again !!
Birmingham has always welcomed everyone, italians and jews in the 19th century,West indians and Asians in the 20th and now eastern europeans in the 21st. Birmingham has always been a hybrid and we are proud of this. Your attitude is typical of Mancs, always up themselves thinking they are better than everyone else, well your are not your attitude proves it...Nuff said!!!!!
i know this will upset some but i'm from birmingham but prefer manchester. one of the many reason is that birmingham centre is full of blacks and asians. im honestly not racist but birmingham is just too full of ethnics...go on any day and certain parts of it feel like you're in africa or india. manchester still holds alot of englishness that the other big cities are losing or have lost.
Who are you trying to kid? Per capita Manchester has more ethnic minorities than Birmingham. Manchester is a tiny little place full of tiny little minds - as your comments demonstrate! You'll be trying to tell us next that Manchester has no gay people!! (Thats called irony - just incase you're struggling to understand!)
you silly little boy. Manchester is widely regarded by everyone to have overtaken BirMINGham a good few years ago. 2 world class stadiums, commonwealth games, tallest building outside London, Google/Bank of New York moved its UK HQ here and the BBC I can go on if you like sunshine.
u shitchester people have always envyed one of the best shopping places in europe=birmingham. and birmingham is the industrial capital of the uk and the second biggest industrial city in europe. get your facts right you fucking retarded cunt.and go and fuck rooney up the shitter.manchester=land of the wannabe gangstas you r all fucking twatz come up to brum if you think u r ard enough and tell us what u think then.u=wanka
is that a herd of Brontasaurus I see walking thru the Bull Ring ?

Located in a huge bomb crater somewhere in the lost lands of the Midlands, Birmingham is where the people of England go to die. Inhabitants are required to serve at least five-nights a week in the underground Utterly Butterly mines (pronounced "Utter-lie-butter-lie-moynes" in their yokel tongue).

Birmingham has the best tasting tap water in the UK.
Your Kettle / Iron won't get clogged with lime scale.
When you make a cup of tea, you won't see scum at the top.
No £8 / £10 congestion charge just to use car.
Image ? Skyline? It may not be Manhattan, but tell me, which city can even claim to have a sky line as good as Manhattan?
So please stop comparing Birmingham with Stabdon or Gunshotchester.

I don't think this video shows Birmingham skyline at it's best and there are better vantage points than this. As for being scruffy it won an award for the cleanest city centre in Britain last year!. Manchester just shouts a bit louder but Brummies are more reserved in this regard.
Infact Manchester was in a list of the top 20 worse places to live in Britain on CH 4.

pacornerpolska- are certain sections of the city centre that are attractive such as Brindley Place. Im from Sunderland (we don't have canal's here) so I find that pleasant. Certain cities have reputations which are a bit unfair; Bradford, Sunderland and Hull are good examples- they all suffer from a 'backward' image but having visited all three I believe they all have something to offer. bigbroeye 3 years ago 2
bigbroeye- thanks a lot for your reply. Brum has a lot to go on. Of course, its not faultless. Id like to see the wheel back, but all in all its a great place.
CULAVE 3 years ago
that is because brummies know that they're home town is a squat....i know, i grew up here and still live here...yes it is still a squat, but so are many places in England.
England is over-rated really, lets face it we live in a bit of a shit hole...so we just have to make the best of a bad job.
5EB1987 3 years ago
5EB1987- What are you talking about! This country is not a shithole. Im not saying its faultless but compared to some places wer'e in heaven. Really , England or Zimbabwe? England or North Korea? England or Iraq? If theres anything wrong with this country its that its full of whiners like you. We are among the most priveleged people on earth. And as for Brum, what are you achieving by running your city down? Actually don't answer that- I don't want to encourage you.
CULAVE 3 years ago 2
Just because a place is not zimbabwe/korea/iraq does not means it is not a shithole.(Comparisons are odious, especially like with unlike)
As this is a video about birmingham i thought i would air my opinion on the place :) what would i be achieving if i sang its praises? i am just giving my opinion of brum as a balance to the comments which say its a great place. Like brum if you like, but believe me when i say there are many reasons not to :(
5EB1987 3 years ago
5EB1987- Of course youre entitled to your opinion but my point is if you think Brum is so bad why don't you do something about it. Why don't you try and get elected- and influence change in the problems Brum has. I just think with complaining there should be action.
CULAVE 3 years ago
I agree, and I'm involved with all the all the usuals, youth groups/neighbourhood watch/community meetings. However, sadly the city's local government is corrupt and irresponsible..so local government would be a difficult channel to try to use effect change...the electoral commissioner has compared brum council to a banana republic, with fraud cases that would "disgrace a banana republic"... not very promising. so u see one 19 year old in brum is gonna have a hard time changing things :(
5EB1987 3 years ago
5EB1987- Well I genuinely commend your working with those groups, and I apologise if I unfairly misunderstood you in that regard but ive travelled enough around the UK to know there are many worse places than Brum. There are areas it can certainly improve. The tourist information point on New Street isn't great and I think the wheel should return. Its also not great at selling itself though I think it has a lot to promote. May I ask whereabouts you live? Birmingham is a big place.
CULAVE 3 years ago
I agree there are many worse places in the UK, of course, and brum has huge potential, but this is quashed by the local gov. etc... On the suject of the wheel...The ICC is one of the nicest buildings in the city, and Centenery Square is one of the nicest parts of the city, when it does not have a slightly tacky looking ferris wheel, taking up space, not making much profit, and consuming a bonkers amount of energy 24/7. Quite glad its gone tbh :) I live just by Five Ways if u know it btw
5EB1987 3 years ago
Another thing.. :) The city's image is not very creative or attractive, new buildings going up in the city are cheap, poorly designed and generally disappointing. I only know this as my brother is an architect who has worked on projects within london, edinburgh, and brum. Brum's projects were laughed at by all the architects/visualisers/manager involved..it is clear how much money is pocketed by the council..when huge amounts are allocated to projects.....(cont)..
5EB1987 3 years ago
and then (for example) the cheapest possible buildings are produced...ie: orion building/radisson SAS hotel etc. Where are them pennies going i wonder?? :( no one in brum seems to have noticed yet.

Good video. Made me miss home, though...

mogyliptus 3 years ago
mogypliptus- Although I can see positive things about Manchester, you're completely right.

Monthagny- Rubbish.
CULAVE 3 years ago 2
I actually agree with Monhagny, to a point. In fact the first thing I thought of was: Warsaw. I have been to Birmingham, many times in fact as I used to study in Coventry. It's a nice city, don't get me wrong, and full of life... but beautiful it most certainly is not. I don't think it ever has been to be honest. But hey, Rome wasn't built in a day either and Brum's improved so much in the last twenty years that I am speechless.
pacornerpolska 3 years ago
pacornerpolska- I am not against criticism of Birmingham.
CULAVE 3 years ago 2
I wasn't trying to run Brum down, believe me, I understand the predicament - I'm from Bradford, a city that suffers a similar (worse) reputation to Brum. My only point was that it does have a certain Eastern European ennui about. It's the wide roads and concrete, I guess. More a product of its time than anything else. There really wasn't an insult intended.
pacornerpolska 3 years ago
pacornerpolska- its fine; I don't get insulted easily- its just some of the things Montagny was saying were uncalled for.

Monthagny 3 years ago
Yes cities may be built within mountain valleys such as the examples you gave but are there full scale mountains within city boundaries? Maybe there are, but it is rare. And why does a city need a mountain to be attractive?
CULAVE 3 years ago
It makes the city featureless....there is no nature, planting trees just does not make any difference. Birmingham is just so mediocre... What makes Biringham such a chronic town is that its dull too. There is a lot more to Birmingham than the Bull Ring. This is the city that has hosted a G8 Summit, Eurovision, not to forget Crufts and the Clotheshow. It has the lowest crime rate of major British cities and has historically been a centre of great ingenuity, not only with the Lunar Society but as the 'city of a thousand trades'. tobiasnudd 4 years ago
It is the fact that most people are afraid of it's massive ethnic population, most negativity towards Birmingham is due to it's 40% + ethnic population which in my eyes is just plain wrong, we live in a multicultural society and Birmingham is a beacon of that, but that said looking at the regeneration plans for Birmingham in the near future around 2012 it will leave all other cities well behind but it is inevitable the cities to logistically and economically important for the UK
allovdem 4 years ago
I think that most the negativity that is thrown towards Birmingham has nothing to do with how it looks or it size, it's a huge city with a massive population which dwarfs that of Manchester, Liverpool or Glasgow in fact it's twice the size of them and culturally it is internationally better known as well not only in high art but in popular culture as well with such bands as UB40, Duran Duran, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin .etc., it is also now Europe's new shopping capital.
allovdem 4 years ago
Not really, I'd have to disagree with the cultural side and I take an outsider's (southerner's)view. Manchester had a very strong renaissance which was pretty much triggered by the punk movement of 1976. From then on, know one really had to look at it purely from LS Lowry's eyes.
TheSaintST1 4 years ago
There was the likes of The Smiths/Morrisey, Joy Division/New Order, the Stone Roses, Buzzcocks, Oasis, Happy Mondays/Black Grape etc. Manchester has Granada TV (now pretty much in control of ITV) and has the longest running regional soap - Coronation Street. More regional TV comes from here than Birmingham and even the Bernstein brothers said that Manchester had a stronger identity - the main reason they set up Granada there.
TheSaintST1 4 years ago
Don't forget that they also had the Commonwealth games, the first ever super club (the Hacienda) and a whole wealth of famous local actors, Christopher Eccleston (Doctor Who, etc.), Jane Leeves (Frasier), Marsha Thomason (Lost) to name but a few.
TheSaintST1 4 years ago
I really love Birmingham because I admire the car engineering industry that originated here, and the people are generally friendly. It has excellent links to London and the rest of the UK and I for one would find it hard to move away from it, but culturally as far as arts and music (especially music) it still has a fair way to go.
TheSaintST1 4 years ago
One thing I do notice is that the commercialisation is starting to really unbalance an already delicate arts and cultural scene. The Oasis Markets is shutting down (once a student favourite) for yet another office/apartments scheme , The Custard factory has now decided to go up its own backside - although I think it was a victim of its own success.. C'mon people Brum needs more of a maverick feel to it.

incase you didnt know, there is a massive building programme going on now in the major cities not just birmingham. leeds manchester liverpool birmingham will all look like american cities by 2012 when all the first phase of work is done. each city will have buildings in excess of 65-70 storeys.on an honest view the real 2nd most important and biggest size/population in the UK is MANCHESTER. birmingham cant sell itself like manchester can.
rikkituffis 4 years ago
Birmingham is second city because it's population is over one million,Manchester's population is less than 500,000.Second city status is always based on population not how a place sells itself!.
secondcity11 4 years ago
due to 1974 boundary changes, manchester decided to count only the city centre which has 450,000 pop. the suburbs are run by different councils. its like aston lozells edgbaston mosley and sparkbrook not being called b'ham. ive lived in both places and i can tell you manchester looks feels and is actually the bigger place. its a shame because i am from b'ham!

The county of greater Manchester has two and a half million population just like the West Midlands county. The City of Manchester has less than 500,000.I think your getting mixed up between city and county.
Manchester came in the top 20 of the worst places to live in Britain on channel 4 and has twice the crime rate of Brum....i know where i'd rather live!.

in the 6 years that i was in manchester i did not see or here of any crimes. during that time i visited home approx 15 times and was mugged twice, my car broken into and almost carjacked on hagley road! only a passing police car saved me. in mcr the place seems more richer and well off and not so gloomy as home and in bham there is too much gun and knife crime
rikkituffis 4 years ago
There's crime in all cities i aint saying there's none in Brum. Check wikipedia Brum has the lowest crime figures of all the british core cities. You prefer Manc i prefer Brum thats ok by me but don't slag the place off when it don't deserve it!.

Check Wikipedia...Birmingham population 1,006,500 Manchester population 452,000...Nuff said.

that figure is the city centre figure. go and check the place out. birmingham had better move on up or else we will end up like leicester, coventry or nottingham, just another minor city in the uk
rikkituffis 4 years ago
Figure's are not given for city centre's....i work for Birmingham City Council, you are a arguing with the wrong person!.I've backed all i've said with information on the internet that anyone can read!. Birmingham's population is twice as big as Manchester's and Birmingham is the second biggest city in Britain...why can't you accept the facts?.
As far as being gloomy the city centre won an award for being the cleanest in Britain!,it also won an award for it's floral displays.
secondcity11 4 years ago
I have been looking for this debate on youtube for ages! The cities I am most connected to are Belfast, Sunderland and Wolverhampton. I have nothing against Manchester but secondcity11 is completely right. If we consider the title to be based on population then Birmingham (pop approx 1 million- just the city!) is about twice the size of Manchester (pop about 547,000). The Greater Manchester conurbation cannot be classed as the city. Birmingham is the second city and allways will be!
CULAVE 4 years ago
rikkituffis- one and a half times bigger? What source did you get that from?
CULAVE 3 years ago
rikkituffis- with respect, that comparison is not accurate.

There are plans to rebuild the station,do a search on the Evening Mail website for details.
Welcome back to the midlands!.

However... Every single decent building in city centre has a blue plaque on it saying "partly sponsored by the European Union" and thats development money set aside for poor places. At the time Liverpool was the poorest spot in the EU. So England gets help to clean up their city centres.

For your information the clean city award was for clean streets not the buildings,my local council tax pays to clean the streets not european money.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
i had a business in the city let me tell you people this city is one of the most shitty smelly places ever.full ov pakis
MRSINGHup 4 years ago
This year Birmingham was voted as having the cleanest city centre in Britain, won a gold award for it's floral displays, had 200,000 attend an arts festival, has more trees than any other city in Europe and the biggest urban park in Europe (SUTTON).The only smelly thing on this page then are the comments of some uneducated bigots!.

In terms of population, Birmingham is the second biggest City in Great Britain.

what a dump-how do SOME people still see Brum as the 2nd city....It has to be manchester!
RRH25 4 years ago
manchester population=500,000 people
birmingham population=1,000,000+ the only good thing about shitchester is man united.

im going to play devils advocat here,as im not from any of the cities but ive been to both, and what ive looked into is that birmingham has a much bigger population city wise,it absolutely dwarfs manchester no arguement,my feelings for manchester is that they live off manchester united to much when they have got a great music scene to go by, birmingham is fantastic for any form of nightlif
vgt127 4 years ago 4
vgt127- I too am unbiased (I was born in Belfast) and have visited both cities a number of times- They both have a lot to offer but Birmingham is, without dought, the second city. However I think it has got complacent in selling itself.

manchester is well better. birmingham is full of blacks infact i went an hour without seeing 1 foreigner !!!! i dont wish to go bk to the city centre again !!

Birmingham has always welcomed everyone, italians and jews in the 19th century,West indians and Asians in the 20th and now eastern europeans in the 21st. Birmingham has always been a hybrid and we are proud of this. Your attitude is typical of Mancs, always up themselves thinking they are better than everyone else, well your are not your attitude proves it...Nuff said!!!!!
brumgum 4 years ago 5
i know this will upset some but i'm from birmingham but prefer manchester. one of the many reason is that birmingham centre is full of blacks and asians. im honestly not racist but birmingham is just too full of ethnics...go on any day and certain parts of it feel like you're in africa or india. manchester still holds alot of englishness that the other big cities are losing or have lost.
mildredsmittens 4 years ago
