I was in one of the 18 wheelers loading up this aircraft in Calgary AB in the middle

of the night along with 5 /22 wheeler cattle haulers and we had oversize loads on

our trailers.the trucks looked like dinky toys beside the plane.The cabin is so high

up from the ground it is mind boggling . It's hughe and overwhelming when u are

beside it and the take off takes your breath away.absolutely amazing.

A little food for thought I saw this mighty aircraft at an airshow here in Oklahoma City at Will Rogers World Airport in 1994, along with two SU 27 Russian fighters It flies with such grace and seeming ease you would just not believe it, I wish I had video,, but it loped through the air like an angel, as if it were meerly gliding!! It burns 40 pounds of rubber every time it touches the runway when it lands!! Can you imagine how many condoms could be made?

I luv how it goes round strutting its stuff dwarfing all planes there!! Wot gets me is how d pilot taxis a jet of that proportion round MAN & is able to keep it on the taxiways, he's over 12m off the ground! I know ATC said 'there will be a vehicle to lead you in' but that vehicle would need to be at least 20-30ft ahead of the plane for the pilot to be able to see it! This thing about 6 engines,the B-52 has 8! Granted not as powerful, but its still more! Awesome aircraft & great vid. Well done

It was really designed to carry Buran (Soviet Space Shuttle). Although Russians din't save Buran, it was destroyed.

After almost a dozen years of oblivion and ruining (while aircraft stood without engines and even essential care) in 2001 it was rebuilt almost from scratch by Antonov (Ukrainian aircraft building company which designed and built it from the word go).

Now it is biggest aircraft in the world.

You can see what happens to a ukrainian Mriya - the second hull at AVIANT plant is rusting in the dock - Ukraine doesn't have the money, the resources or the will to finish the second plane.

@ukrdan antonov was russian. his degign bureau was found in novosibirsk. this plane was designed by people of different nationalities, a lot of them russians(designer chief being a ukrainian born russian).parts for the plane were built at 100 different production facilities in tashkent, kuibyshev, moscow, kharkov and kiev. it was finished in 1988 in the su. it's a pure soviet product. before you claim it to be ukrainian desiged and built, start respecting other nations of the su.

I doubt very much that keeping thrust reverser 4 on would have any effect on turning...maybe on engine 5 or 6 certainly not on engine 4...more like the reverser casing failed to return to its 'off' position

This is beyond massive. the B747, the A380, neither of those aircraft have got anything on this beast. Could you imagine the comforts features this thing would have if it was a passenger jet and not just a cargo?

I didn't realize until recently that that this is a one of kind airplane. The 2nd is being built. When this one was built, it wasn't equipped with carbon fiber brakes because the US wouldn't give Russia the technology. It needed something like a 3 mile runway. That may be different today.
