  • This video made me so cold when we "looked inside the fruit" . Im so COLD!

  • fruit is alive haha lol

  • Now if we could just prove water is alive then there would be nothing we don't kill to live off of :D just teasing. But biblically, clean water is referred to as Living Water. ;)

  • @takineko Yea biblicaly humans wore created by god and we all know that wrong.

  • @Mcwolfkiller No we don't. Please study for yourself and don't just assume that is true.

  • THANX I DIDN'T KNOW THT

  • pretty cool though, the fruit breathes! It's alive!!

  • That is actually pretty useful.

Proof that Pears need better ventilation, i was right!

I love my pears, best fruit ever.

  • Anyone who calls that info retarded needs to really go back to school, with info like that they could progress even further in reaserach of foods creating foods that stay ripe longer or take longer to rot thus creating a opening that could even solve world hunger sum day

  • Solve world hunger?? Lol that's a bit ambitious. Perhaps we need to do a bit more research on the arrangement of the economy of affected countries, rather than on the density of fruit.

  • Now i didnt just say that this right here would solve world hunger lol. I said its a step in the right direction TO solving world hunger this is a long process but actually finding out this stuff contributes to solving world hunger sum day.

  • Err, well, yes fruit density, vs. ABSURD levels of overpopulation and also a rather vicious and sharkish corporate trans national group of cartels exploiting this horrible imbalance. People would be poor enough were economic systems fair! The only prognosis is war and famine. Sorry people.

  • you spelled research wrong.

  • Lol wow you really want to be that picky and thats the one thing u have to comment on.....lol geez

  • I see there's kind of a heated argument in here, but I just wanted to say, we throw away tons of usable fruit every year to keep the prices up in the grocery store. We don't need to create fruits and veggies to end world hunger-- they should probably just donate what they toss out.

  • The only problem is getting it there. The reason this country throws it away and everything is because its gone past its prime and you cant really give rotting food to pple it will just make them sick and possibly make things worse by them being hungry and diseased =\. It would be so much easier if we could just give it to em

  • yeah lets give rotten food to the homeless, and people of third world countries. its like a fucking steak dinner to them.

  • Lets give them those fruits wich are good, but not eaten.

Its not only rotten stuff that gets thrown away.

Ever been to a big market when it closes?

TONS off good food gets thrown away...

  • We should stop selling them our stuff.

Poor Lands in Africa can't build up an economy because "Rich" countries deliver theyr shit there, and sell it on dumping prices (with financial help of theyr goverment...)

    Stop that.

Farmers in those lands CAN provide the Food needed, but nobody would buy it. We should stop sending stuff, and really help them to get things going again (it worked before the "whiteman" came there...)

  • Likewise you should sell your computer and all of your personal belongings so that you can spend the money on the poor. What are you waiting for!

  • And who are you, or anyone on this planet, to decide what science will be useful and what science won't be useful? The practical applications of science research are not always immediately apparent. By your argument we should have stopped all science research hundreds of years ago so that we could put all resources into feeding the worlds poor...but then we would've been doing it with oxen driven plows instead of the efficient and powerful machines we have today.

  • I don't know how I survived all this time without this great knowledge.. :O

  • btw - belgian scientist rock!

  • Oh my God, this is witchcraft and the work of the devil. God never wanted us to look inside fruit like that.

  • what the fuck is going wrong inside your head ?

  • OXYGEN and CARBON DIOXIDE behave the SAME way inside the BODY.

  • the lady talks weird...

  • so they figured out that pears are more dense than apples? by using some super-sophisticated machinery?

try this one: measure its volume against its weight, take the ratio, and compare it to an apple. a 3 year old child could have figured that one out.

  • man you so smaaaaart! i wanna hava your babies.

  • you learn something new every day!

  • "Carbon dioxide and oxygen USE the empty space"

    Inanimate objects have wills?

And, wow, pears are less dense than apples so they oxidize faster. They could have saved some time by biting into one.

  • LULZ IT BE GLOBAL WARMINGZ.

  • .....who really cares??

  • Her voiced is annoying.

  • That voice was slightly irritating, I agree with you sora000111

  • omg i love this video i now know that i will go to heaven!!

  • Sweet voice. Sounds like a robot.

  • Grr i hate the voice over

  • cool!

  • They rot faster because god wants them to rot faster so their pear souls can go into heaven and then he can eat them all.

  • lol

    praise the lord!

  • It's interesting the means by which fruit actually rotts. It's copious small facts like this that make up a cumbersome text book.

  • For all you naysayers out there, why not try looking up all the accidental discoveries that have been made when researching something completely different? We should research everything and know how everything works. Just to know. That's why we're human. We have the capacity for true knowledge and wisdom.

  • One thing I don´t like about this one is the madeup voiceacting...=/ Noone talks like that... it´s sounds almost scary. She´s a ROBOT... whoa!

  • I must be the only one that thinks these experiments lead to better food preservation techniques in the future.

You have to start somewhere, this might not seem like much now but it might change the way the food industry handles items with pears in it. You have to know how food reacts in different conditions.

  • a: Maybe you can learn to spell

b: Maybe this has other applications, or will, so stop being so shortsighted

c: Plenty of work is being put into cancer research. That doesn't mean every single scientist or lab in the world is dedicated to it. At any rate if they all were there's no way they'd stay coordinated, communicated, and on top of each others' work instead of running the same tests. And then there's specialists. You think every scientist is a doctor?

  • wow calm down douche

  • (Dude, you´re swearing alot.. no need to do that.)

True that is this the internet (that was for learning information at the start mind you.)

It´s not pointless if you need to eat it in a proper order...(Didn´t think about that one eh?)

True... that IS pointless. Still Science is science and without it, we wouldn´t have anything here at all. Not even the computer so we might as well just respect their tries...

  • Younger then that... and btw just because I check on stuff like this, doesn´t mean I´m 50+... it only means I have an interest for it,kid... there´s a saying btw. "You live as you learn" It basically means whatever you learn that can be useful in the future... at least for your life.... whatever btw.. you´re not listening are you?

  • *shrug*

Physical science is about the properties of matter, and if you don't understand that many properties are shared - especially between living, growing organisms - and are thereby applicable to other means - then this is why society will never stop needing scientists to do "pointless" things. It nicely balances out the perfectly pointless idiocy you're contributing, thanks.

  • Is fruit lungs seriously the best analogy you could come up with?

Don't confuse the stupid people on youtube thinking that fruit breathes.

  • they are dumbshits

  • The way she says 'apple' is highly entertaining. But she needs to go.

  • lol yea

  • I hate her voice so much that i think i am going to unsubscribe, pleaseee pleaaasseeee find someone else, last week there was a different guy and he wasnt bad

  • i know, its fucking ANNOYING! peaaarrrsss rot faster than applllllleessssssssss!!!

  • i love these little snippets.

  • i hate pears

this just proves how much they suck

    :)

  • Thats pretty cool. Do they "breath" when they are only attached to a tree ?

    Imagine a solid state lung!

  • Just speculation, again. The graphics were cool, though.

  • the voice sounded a little odd, especially at the ending, as if she didn't know the end was there until she said it. Also the graphics didn't shed much light on the eternal apple vs. pear conundrum.

  • interesting...

  • One cannot run 100 miles, without first learning how to walk.

    Ancient Chinese Proverb

  • piss off. why don't you cure cancer instead of wasting your life then?

  • ok, so you tell me to piss off for having an opinion and telling the truth,

  • Dude, exploratory science like this MIGHT FIND THE CURE FOR CANCER. Sheesh.

  • yeah

damn who cares of an apple/pear

    pears ore GROSS anyway

  • I see you do not possess the mind of one who logically seeks answers, despite the relatively appealing name you made for yourself. All of the greatest answers in science have always derived from the simplest discoveries, basically an extension of Occam's Razor.

  • Not all science is strictly for disease research you know. If that was the case we'd still be in the stone age.

  • jajajajajjajajjaa belgian researchers have a lot of time on there hands

  • Not as much time as you...

  • Those Belgian scientists must be very smart...

  • well i dont know what i would do if they hadn't reported this!

  • interesting

  • O shit! Apples got lungs!?

You know what this means: we need to try and get an apple high.

  • lol awesome

  • SCIENCE!@@#$%

  • *could* explain, but clearly didn't bother.

It might also be that they're not the same species and have many differences.

    Christ, this gets worse.

  • I <3 you newscientistvideo!

  • narrated?

  • NewScientist staff might be a little arrogant, because they don't care about that I've told them to include in their video the issue's explanation of the purpose

  • I agree although I can see a purpose for this study. It could potentially allow some invention to better preserve fruit. Maybe?

  • Agreed, but it would be nice to not have to guess for ourselves what the purpose of the experiment was in the first place and what possibilities they may yield.

  • I would have thought more oxygen = faster decomposition.

  • Well yes, but it's not the oxygen but the lack of circulation. Fruits produce carbon dioxide and methane which are what cause it to rot. Hence why if you keep fruits sealed up in a container with air, it will rot faster and also why the saying "one bad apple can ruin the bunch".

Imagine you being sealed in a room with no circulation. You'll sooner die of poisoning yourself with carbon dioxide before you run out of oxygen.

  • Fruit produces a hormone called ethylene oxide not methane which speeds up the ripening/rotting process in other fruit in close proximity.

  • Ahhh, sorry, I thought I might've been wrong.

    Thanks x_X;

  • No problems. You know that slightly alcaholic twang you get when eating an over ripe banana? That's the ethylene. Bananas produce it seemingly more than other fruit which is why they advise storing them seperately.

  • Yea! I knew about that...vaguely enough to not store bananas with other fruits but just not enough to remember the name of the chemical ^^;

Do you think they overload banana flavor ice cream and candies with Ethylene then? Cause they taste like crap more than bananas to me.

  • I know what you mean, however I have no idea what they put in those things. Check the wrapper or Google it. That's my only advice.

  • True, and it is just bad journalism. And this way of depicting a nice jolly entertainment, a video that is fun to watch, without any practical reason, wastes the whole research.

  • Makes sense, is interesting, and is freaky...

  • freaky.

  • Interesting...

  • makes sence
