these older proto-versions of devo songs have a distinct quality that gives them more of an edgy feel than the normal studio versions. just listen to older versions of shrivel up or mongoloid
@newfuckingwave This particular version reminds me of The Residents, especially the Booji Boy vocal. But there are other influences in there, I think (Zappa, Beefheart, etc.). Jerry was influenced by blues, Mark was influenced by avant-garde, electronic music, commercials, etc.
Said it before and will say it again:the ultimate de-evolution anthem (hence DEVO).July 6th 1998 happened,I was there,heart of Australia,Uluru giggled,but then again,so did the sweatfly swarmed pinks...hmm...must re-think the event. My S.I.B. itches a bit.Must consult reverend Stang...Eh?Wha? Aww,scram,youse guys!
Wow, when "Are We Not Men, We Are Devo" came out in 1978 or 79, that was wierd enough, but at least then, Kraftwerk, David Bowie (Low), and helped prepare us a bit. But to see that Devo was putting out disturbingly wierd music in 1974 shows how ahead of time they were.
If I recall my Devo history, this would have been taped in the studio they used to use literally behind a carwash in Akron (or thereabouts), and it cost them a buck to get in because they literally had to drive through the carwash to get to the studio.
More interesting, Bob Watson might (?) have been in on this session -- as well as three Mothersbaughs: Mark, Bob and Jim on his homemade electronic drums.
They made music they wanted to hear, not what was popular.

Never heard this before, anyone got any more information on the bootleg this was taken from?
milkygear 1 year ago
Trivia from WikiDevo: "The origins of the 'Smart Patrol' title can be found in a bootleg from 1974, where Jerry says to an audience member:
'Alright. You're a smart prole. Nowhere to go.' The song was originally titled 'Smart Proletariats'.
