@loke177 - It's been explained before. Count Rugen said The Machine acts like a suction pump, except it sucks years off a person's life force instead of water: when The Machine is on, Westley's life is sucked away from his body through the suction cups and hoses. Say he would've lived to be 90 years old, now with 1 year gone he'll live to be 89, and so on. I hope that answered your question.
This scene and the 2nd time it was used terrified me. I know it's only make believe, these actors played it out so well, especially Cary Elwes who screamed like a banshee!
I hated this scene when I was a kid... I would always find some excuse to be out of the room when Westley started screaming because I would just start to cry :( DON'T MAKE FUN OF ME I WAS A SENSITIVE CHILD
What I love so much about this movie is how well adapted it is to the book. Sure, they left out quite abit, but what is in there is like, SPOT ON. Specifically this scene, nearly word-for-word perfect.
@mowingthefrontlawn - Look again. The suction cups are not actually set on his nipples, they're above set above them on either side of his chest so one suction cup is over his heart. Sorry.
can you girls please shut the hell up with westley being hot? buttercup is nice to but we don 't say that all the damn time so whatch the movie god damn.
If they made a cartoon version of this movie they would of put Vegeta on there and Vegeta said it before and he will say it again "A Saiyan get stronger each and everytime you put them in near-death"
And I can say this: Vegeta can cope with torture, He stayed with Frieza all that time during Saiyan and Frieza Saga
@brenden234 - That'd be different, seeing the first woman hooked up to The Machine. But I don't imagine anyone would go to a Facebook or Twitter page and actually ask Miss Starr if she'd do a scene being tortured by The Machine. I thought you were going to say Buttercup. Westley saves her life several times, he defeats her captors, gets her through the Fire Swamp, and... she rides off with Humperdink thinking he'd actually return him safely to his ship? Ugh.
There's no electricity. He said it's like a suction pump; instead of sucking water, it sucks away years of life from the person hooked up to The Machine. Kind of like an overgrown vacuum cleaner. In this case, one year's worth of life that Westley would have lived has just been forcibly, and literally, sucked out from him because of The Machine.
Now that Westley's gone, maybe we can get Jon and Kate Gosselin in the Pit of Despair and hooked up to The Machine. Just a suggestion. ;)
You know, I went years and years between the first time I saw this movie and my second viewing, but I never forgot this scene, perhaps because it was so frightening the first time through...
for some reason, count rugen cracks me up. i guess it's because he's so cold and calm and thinks that torture is merely a means to advance scientific research. christopher guest did a fantastic job bringing his character to life.
I had such a crush on him when I first saw this movie when I was like seven (and even now when I watch it he's still pretty darn hot). But I almost cried when this happened, I felt so sorry for him, now that I'm no longer seven, I like this part of the movie...
@Wolfman12395 i watch his movie when I was 5, this part made be throw the movie under the bookcase and now I'm 16 and have an urge to watch it again, with out being creeps out by this scene like i was last time.
keith richards also went to this machine..but it went the other way round.....
