  • Wouldn't it be cool if you could list the tab for this as well and every other tute you have up here? It would help complete newbies like me no end

  • I have to ask, why does everyone tell me to get a harp in C when all the apparently great tutorials are in every key but c?

  • Just amazing Jason! really great to see & learn from this, slow & fast blues you did just shows how in control and comfortable you are with the harp. Yeah the 2 last notes were a Wammer Jammer killer I wanted to see again! I'm right handed & been playing with it in my right hand, but watching you with it in your left I switched & got a much better whah effect..have to get used to it in my left hand now. Anyway keep 'em comin' they're all great tutorials. You da man!!

  • That was beautiful playing Moon Cat, you can really play my friend... Pure Soul in your playing.. Thank Rusty

  • hey jason enjoying your videos - I just have a random question for you, when I play the harp it sounds like I am pushing each note I don't know what better way to describe it, how can I sound more fluid? Your advice would be much appreciated...

  • I fell off my chair with that ending

  • You are one of the best harp players I have ever heard. I've been playing for a long time and after listening to you, I feel like a total beginer. There aere so many things you do and I am really struggling to figure it out. I'm humbled.

  • many harpies playing and doing it very well but not many plays as horny as you

  • "...just as easy for you too... for youtube!..." hilarious

  • Jason..another cool lesson! Looks like we have a mutual friend.Bill & I have been friends off & on for over 20 years..we weren't on speaking terms for awhile, but we've been hanging out again these days...

  • That is some crAAAAAzy good lesson you got here man. Really helped me start understanding some of the secrets of the mighty 3 hole draw!! Thanks a lot for sharing. J.

  • you are very cool and good player....the best inspiration for me..i play from 2 months..saludos desde Chilee!!

  • I've wasted so much cash, and time, on books that could never teach you how to really play. This stuff is like finding the map to buried treasure, what you and Adam are doing. thanks

  • Jason. I love your videos mate and you (along with Adam) deserve a lot of praise for all your hard work. I'll show my appreciation for buying your recordings (which i urge anyone here to do) Question: You tried out the MXR Carbon Copy Analog delay? I have been road testing one myself, really like it. What are your thoughts?

    Cheers!

    Ray

  • Man, I just found your videos and I was amazed. Very, but very very good habilities! You got music in your soul =)

  • wow brother, you have the best tone around, Im envious

  • great playing, and though i think you had one too many before you hit the record button, it helped you out in this one...Ive ripped it, slowed it down and it makes great practice

  • Thanks the sad part is have been sober 11 years!

    Jason

  • a lack of sleep then, regardless, i seem to keep finding my way back to this one. i also dig your scales vids, but you move too quickly for me in those, and i cant overblow...

  • You got to give it to keep it..... 242 days for me... nice work

  • Congrats men! Friend of Bills is a friend of mine! keep on keeping on brother.

    J

  • Does Stevie wonder play diatonic on any songs and if so which ones ( if you know)

  • Looked up the phrase Harmonica God and guess whose picture was there....yep..... Jason Ricci...

  • Awe!!! Flattery will get you everywhere!

    J

  • CARALHO!!!!! you are very, very good!.... i´m live in Brazil and i will lurn much, from you dude, tks!

  • hey i'd like to learn stevie wonders songs, what key harmonica does he use?

  • C Chromatic!

  • ... over the I Chord I mean... Does it make any sense or I am missing completely the point? (I know it doesn´t take only the blues scale to play the blues, but we are talking about a traditional blues).

By the way, thanks for all the wonderfull videos! Can´t find words to thank incredible ppl like you, Adam Gussow and all the harmonica players tubbed there:)

  • No thats it! in cross the 2 hole draw and three hole yes! those are the quintessential notes for expressing or mirroring that chord with melody. You could flatten the third but your right again blues uses BOTH not only traditional but modern as well. I would venture to say that the major third AND the minor third were used more in delta blues than chicago and even maybe even modern blues. So in short you can use both, see my vids on root notes, and 4 hole draw boogie for how.

  • Hi! Because I´ve ignored theory for too long and only now I am going into that direction, one thing intrigues me: When you talk about the I Chord, you could, ie, base it on the 2 draw or the 3 draw, which´d be the root and the 3rd. If you were going to solo using the blues scale, you´d skip the major 3rd and use the minor one (in some pitch around it, anyway) to create the "blue" impression or whatever kids call it these days. So I often ignored the 3 draw and now I have 2nd thoughts.

  • dont know what the hell your talking about but thats probly because i dont play harmonica but your the first iv seen trying to teech it keep it up .would make a good instrument for me if i bout one what key to start with

  • Key of C

  • damn, you play too damn good man and finished with an almost diva style jajaj and no disrespect be yourself man! and thanks for the time and the many legendary lessons!

  • You thank him yet feel obligated to make a 'dig'?

He IS indubitably himself...one thing about Jason is he never conforms to what other people 'think' he should be...is always uncompromisingly true to his own heart and soul. You just got a great lesson for free. Be happy. :)

  • oh shut up! it's just that, the little thing he did at the end made me laugh! no dig's or whatever the fuck, and yes, i am happy

  • cayate la boca

  • Yeah yeah

  • this is why i read youtube comments, hahaha . love it

  • haha thats a golden mel. cool thats what i have the guy at the music store said itd be a good starter. ive been practicing a lot and i love your videos.

  • Wortelneut!

  • Jason,

The thing I most admire about your harmonica playing is that you realize its not about blowin the doors off the next player but making it all work on stage as entertainment not an exercise in egomania. When you get other harp players onstage you make it work and throw ego's aside. Very professional and it really adds to the atmosphere that you create.

  • wow..b2c095,you see that! very cool. A lot of people do not know that about him. Were you at Jason's last Pre-SpAH Harp Blow-off? He didn't want to play, allowing the focus to be on his guest players...but the audience insisted, so he finally did...then some folks were upset because he didn't play 'enough'! When he invites people onstage with him he always gives them a real shot.... I admire that too. :)

  • I was wondering if you've thought about selling MP3s on-line like Gussow. I'd be very interested in buying some downloads to listen to in my car, where I do most of my practicing.

  • Great video, excellent talent, and super lesson. That's for helping me in my path to playing...You're a Star !

  • i want to be u when i grow up

Need much bending practice that's for sure.I do have some of Gindicks books, but listening to your playing and info is tops. Thanks ,Tony

  • Hey Jason Pat Ramsey isn't your dad is he? if you happen to talk to him ask him if he remembers Mike Branton Bobby Hill and Mark potter from canada they played together for a couple of months out here. Bobby plays drums in my band and Branton plays with us quite a bit.

  • Pat isn'yt my real Dad no...He is my adopted father though and I his adopted son as of Aug. 1998. I'll mention those names to him.

  • Sorry I meant the last 2b lessons :)

Seriously, you are a Great player and Great teacher. Haven't seen any new lessons in a while. Hope you're not giving up on us.

By the way, Pat Ramsey is a great inspiration to me.

I knew you had learned from him but didn't know he was your dad - Cool!

    Thanks again very much,

    Terry

  • Glad to hear pat has affected you as well! I'm not giving up just went on the road for a while...

    J

  • Hey Jason: I loved that SPAH seminar where Pat heard your riffs and exclaimed..."he stole that from me" then ruefully..."but he's doing them better", lol...you turned ME into a huge Pat Ramsey fan too...his "Build me a Woman" is the best. And if I'm ever going to learn Blues diatonic, it's going to be from my very favourite player (and teacher)..you. These videos are dynamite. So much fun seeing you at SPAH last week too. The mini-documentary is hysterically funny.

    Elizabeth

  • Jason,

Thanks very much for all the lessons.

Adam Gussow layed out the 12 bar blues to where I could understand it and in your last 2 lessons you really opened it up so that I can now actually play through it.Not well yet but I do get it now.

    Thanks again!

    Terry

  • jason, it is SO nice of you to post these lessons. I just found you tonite, and my harp playing is WAY better already. You are a natural. WOW. Thank you so much*S*

  • Jason, do you use tongue blocking for single notes?

  • sometimes on the 3 hole less even on the 2 hole and very rarely on the 1 ..So I mostly lip purse...I will often but not always tounge block single notes above the 3. Sometimes it's easier to do big "Octave type" leaps if I T.B. the high note so I use them both tomachieve various ends. I don't believe one is better than the other! They both have advantages and draw backs. Thank you one of my favorite subjects.

  • My vibrato comes from my tubby....tummy. I guess I'm not tube good at puns like you.

  • I'll see you there at the Hippie stage!

  • You are fast becoming my favorite instructor. The way you combine explanations with practical demonstrations really brings the ideas home to me. Can't wait to see you teach at the Bean Blossom Blues Fest in Sept.

  • Jason - The last 3 lessons have been excellent!!! You are really hitting your teaching stride, man. Just playing the root notes with good tone and timing is SOOO important, a lesson that took me >10 years to figure out. Add in your advice on good bend intonation, and you are nintety-tube percent of the way there. Thanks for the reinforcement.

  • Thank you sir!

  • Forgot to say, are you playing in a very spacious, or empty room? cos the resonance carries really well or is it that masterful tone?! Oh, and is the Tubian scale a variation on the dorian?!

  • It's the room....all glass and metal furriture..Thank you!

    J

  • Well, that nailed it! You've got the bends off to a tee, brilliant Jason. Thanks so much for the lessons. I'm getting that Tubian glow all over...haha!

  • Wow , what more can I say. Great!

  • Damn, that's the first time I hear you play a slow blues... slow. Anyway, mind-blowing stuff, as always.

    BTW Greetings from Poland;)

  • Very nice!

I really liked the slow blues stuff. It sounded a lot like the Careless Love track you did. Especially the turnaround.

Thanks for contributing to my "Tube Do" list and ...

    Jam On!

    -BB

  • Wow thanks a thousand. This was really mind blowing for me. You really tore the blues improv basics into digestable pieces. Greetings from Finland. Btw I think Sibelius kicks ass too :)

  • Thanks lozimao! That Sibeliius violin concerto is THE most beutiful, haunting piece of music I have ever heard hands dow, It's really cool to talk to some one who listens to blues and harmonica music that can also feel classical as well!

  • Thx Jason, you just made my day at Work so much better 8-)
