i completely agree. i'm a huge sonic youth fan, and i can tell you that lee + thurston and the rest have done more variation in their guitar playing than any band could ever imagine. because of that i really hate that boring hgh gain humbucker palm mute bullshit that most guitar players crap out. it sounds good in moderation, but come on.
and to whoever said that palm muting is as essential as legato or bends, you need to rethink guitar playing.
It isn't just for metal, you poo punching fag. It became popular because of guitar players such as jeff beck, dave gilmour and joe walsh using it, It can be used for metal, but it isn't just a metal distortion pedal. so suck my balls
Ah, bunch of cork sniffers on here-the Rat is awesome. Not so sure about these reissues stomp boxes, but my original from the mid-80s is one I wouldn't part with for anything.
This had alway's been my number one effect, i couldn't play any gig without it. look up my band on itunes it's called Mintzkov and it's all rat pedal you hear.
So do I. That's why I hate it... because they ALL do it all the time. If people actually did varied things, like take Sonic Youth for example. They are VARIED. Don't tell me palm muting adds variety, because it doesn't.
bobbybobbinson... Palm muting is for people who want a percussive/legato/powerful sound depending on how their used. That adds variety...... its a good way to add dynamics to less dynamic tones too, if its that bad, why not take a song that uses palm mutes for a dramatic effect (like a fast/heavy metal riff) and play it without them... it will sound "flat" or "messy" Imagine "basket case" by green day without the palm mutes at the start.... it would loose all its rhythmic texture...

I don't care. First of all, "Basket Case" is a pretty lame song, so I'm going to ignore that. It's painfully overused. There are a billion ways to add variety to a guitar song. Why don't these bands try any of the awesome things Hendrix or Sonic Youth came up with?
And second of all i agree that there are a billion ways to add variety to a "guitar song" but if you use palm muting then there are a billion and one or more if you combine techniques. Saying that using them is bad is like someone saying "Bends" are bad or "up strumming is bad" and personally i find most hendrix songs "pretty lame" apart from the wind cries mary but i dont state that their lame, only that its my opinion, to state their lame would be "stupid" cuz some ppl like them.
acoustic guitar uses palm muting all the time. I play almost 100% acoustic and i couldnt play without it. bluegrass music uses it in thumb picking all the time. blues music uses it to change the tone of the guitar as well.
okay shure you do, but say you were famous and your record label wanted you to write songs with palm mutes in the verses, would you think palm mutes are stupid???
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Shut the fuck up. Your point is completely retarded. Why the hell would a record label want a band to use palm mute anything to do with whether or not I think palm mutes are stupid?
I wouldnt say metal so much as just rock. I mean i guess you could use it for metal but it doesnt sound like a pedal designed specifically for metal to me. Just my opinion.

Wiggzzzz 2 years ago 54
@Wiggzzzz I can sort of see your point, but when over-used (for example, say, in a trying-too-hard metal band), palm muting can get annoying.

Ask Thurston Moore (he uses a turbo rat). Although the new (unmodified) Rats don't sound very good to me.

well if you get a good enough amplifier and maybe an EQ pedal, you won't even need a distortion box

James From Metallica used this distortion pedal back in the day. I dont know if he still does tho, prolly not.
sgman61791 3 years ago
I think he used it only on recording Kill 'em All. Even on Ride The Lightning he has way different set up. Correct me, if I'm wrong.
