  • @bobbybobbinson

i completely agree. i'm a huge sonic youth fan, and i can tell you that lee + thurston and the rest have done more variation in their guitar playing than any band could ever imagine. because of that i really hate that boring hgh gain humbucker palm mute bullshit that most guitar players crap out. it sounds good in moderation, but come on.

and to whoever said that palm muting is as essential as legato or bends, you need to rethink guitar playing.

  • Screw hammer-ons and pull-offs!

  • its really good! that you have your amp?

  • Hey, where is it chained?

  • even the camera masturbates itself haha..

  • i just like palms

  • ya im glad to see a review of this pedal where the dude plays something other than blues licks

  • I FUCKIN' LOVE PALM MUTING!

  • i have it from a friend i dont like it

  • That palm muting comment got people fired up!

  • @stairmast0r

It isn't just for metal, you poo punching fag. It became popular because of guitar players such as jeff beck, dave gilmour and joe walsh using it, It can be used for metal, but it isn't just a metal distortion pedal. so suck my balls

  • The camera has a heartbeat.....scary.....

  • This guy playing blows. It is all palm-muted heavy metal bullshit. Maybe he should listen to some Roy Buchanan

  • @PageandPlant4Life funny if you think that's metal

  • Ah, bunch of cork sniffers on here-the Rat is awesome. Not so sure about these reissues stomp boxes, but my original from the mid-80s is one I wouldn't part with for anything.

  • Awesome video, shows how tight this pedal can be...

  • This had alway's been my number one effect, i couldn't play any gig without it. look up my band on itunes it's called Mintzkov and it's all rat pedal you hear.

  • sounds like randall's rx120d distortion

  • Dude

    Fix the focus on this.

    It's really annoying, seriously

  • haha who the fuck hates palm muting? its an essentially guitar technique... im gonna start hating vibrato and bending now, whos with me?

  • @Wiggzzzz I can sort of see your point, but when over-used (for example, say, in a trying-too-hard metal band), palm muting can get annoying.

  • @Wiggzzzz Or fretting notes for that matter.. God forbid..

  • who fucking cares wether or not you like plam muting for fucks sake?!

  • let me get something straight:

this pedal sucks for playing technical metal riffs. but it works great for what I use it for, i got the turbo.

  • Well I'm sorry music likes sonic variation, bobby.

  • So do I. That's why I hate it... because they ALL do it all the time. If people actually did varied things, like take Sonic Youth for example. They are VARIED. Don't tell me palm muting adds variety, because it doesn't.

  • it does, u just have to know where to look. it's an any style. just look for something different.

  • bobbybobbinson... Palm muting is for people who want a percussive/legato/powerful sound depending on how their used. That adds variety...... its a good way to add dynamics to less dynamic tones too, if its that bad, why not take a song that uses palm mutes for a dramatic effect (like a fast/heavy metal riff) and play it without them... it will sound "flat" or "messy" Imagine "basket case" by green day without the palm mutes at the start.... it would loose all its rhythmic texture...

  • because they might think that "Hendrix and Sonic Youth" are lame in the same way you think Basket Case is.....

  • @kotekotekitty Sonic youth and hendrix are so far beyond green day it's unreal.

  • And second of all i agree that there are a billion ways to add variety to a "guitar song" but if you use palm muting then there are a billion and one or more if you combine techniques. Saying that using them is bad is like someone saying "Bends" are bad or "up strumming is bad" and personally i find most hendrix songs "pretty lame" apart from the wind cries mary but i dont state that their lame, only that its my opinion, to state their lame would be "stupid" cuz some ppl like them.

  • wow you dont know hot to lay the fuck off. skitsofrenick bastard let it go. no one likes you anyway. you probably dont even play guitar

  • yh.... anyone who insists that palm mutes are bad either doesnt play, doesnt play well or is an acoustic junkie

  • acoustic guitar uses palm muting all the time. I play almost 100% acoustic and i couldnt play without it. bluegrass music uses it in thumb picking all the time. blues music uses it to change the tone of the guitar as well.

  • i love palm mutes lol

  • okay shure you do, but say you were famous and your record label wanted you to write songs with palm mutes in the verses, would you think palm mutes are stupid???

  • @bobbybobbinson your a fucking idiot and know nothing about music

  • está bueno, nice pedal, mejor que el BOSS metal zone

  • is this good for single coils?

  • I wouldnt say metal so much as just rock. I mean i guess you could use it for metal but it doesnt sound like a pedal designed specifically for metal to me. Just my opinion.

  • Awful - metallic, scratchy, noisy. Get a Keeley DS-1 So much better

  • i got one of these from 1986-87 :0 sounds good as a boost for solo's

  • rats sound like doodoo

  • yeah, it sounds here so much better than anywhere else

  • is that the original or the reissue?

  • Reissue - current model - fpe-tv

  • @fpe can u get that EVH Tone?

  • is this the reissue or a vintage?

  • Hey, this actually sounds pretty good.

  • Is this pedal better than the turbo version?

  • Ask Thurston Moore (he uses a turbo rat). Although the new (unmodified) Rats don't sound very good to me.

  • quite a nice sound actually...playing through a good tube amp helps i guess

  • tube amp is everything.

  • it sounded fine to me...

  • James From Metallica used this distortion pedal back in the day. I dont know if he still does tho, prolly not.

  • I think he used it only on recording Kill 'em All. Even on Ride The Lightning he has way different set up. Correct me, if I'm wrong.

  • somelike black sabath.butnot mean enough.don't like it.

  • Probably sounds better live. :\

  • reminds me of black sabbath for some reason

  • this is a very flat distotion!

  • He is right...
