I haven't watched this since I was a kid, it really stands out as a horror movie that was full of fresh ideas and worked with its budget contraints. Full Moon tried really hard back then to be cutting edge and different before turning to doo doo. The classics are good but you can't even find half of them anywhere.

The short answer is: so he wouldn't give the secret formula to the Nazis. He knew they could torture him and he probably wasn't sure he'd be able to keep himself from giving the formula (that made the puppets come to life) to the Nazis.
