Resonator guitars were made of mostly metal to be louder. They have a classic blues/country sound to them (As heard in the video). Acoustic electric guitars are made of wood (usually) and have electronics that you use to plug it into an amp.
The most common tunings are open G or open D& sometimes E. These tunings are favored for their ease in forming chords with the slide. As far as "rules" go, well if you do a little more research about slide players you'll find that favored tunings are as varied as favorite slides, glass, brass, etc. Like most things music related it's what works for you that counts. I have found with a little extra work I can play all kinds of slide music is standard tuning.
Somewhere in-between. An electric player would call it a "fat" neck, a classical player "a thin neck". But also brands & models have different profiles & widths.
Yes, you can play a tune like this on a standard 6 string. I am playing this resonator guitar in standard tuning so other than the tone being different because of the resonator cone the music would sound the same. Hope that helps
How do you like your Republic? It obviously sounds great and you can play the hell out of it but how's the guitar overall. I've been looking for a resonator, a tricone but that's not chiseled in stone) and was wondering if the Rebuplics lived up to their hype. They're priced right and I'd love to keep the Texas dollar in Texas. Just curious how yours came and if you've had any problems. Thanks and again, smokin' notes dude. You CAN play!
I really like my Republic. I've been able to play a few and they are truly one of if not the best value in resonators. Frank is great to deal with. The guitars sound great and are very reliable.
About Picks or Fingerpicks: These are traditionally played with thumb and fingerpicks attached to the fingers like a banjo player but can be played with a flat pick as well (like Norman Blake does) I don't use either. I prefer my fingers and fingernails although you lose some volume and projection.
Well... I play metal... but I've tried to play slide guitar. You've got pretty decent slide-guitar-gungfu, buddy. You really ride those slurs out til they die, lol.
great playing, nice tone !!

What tuning is it? Open D?
MrFranciscoFidalgo 1 year ago
@MrFranciscoFidalgo Standard Tuning on this one. I'm actually not very good at all in open tunings which should obviously be easier for slide.
JeffSennGuitars 1 year ago
@JeffSennGuitars Thats very respectable what you can pull off in standard tuning slide.
Peace.

Listening to you - I kinda hear the odd sound that's so similar to what Ron Wood was producing for The Faces in in the 1970s - Keep this up :)

Standard tuning: E A D G B E

I was under the impression that you have to tune differently for slide. Can you fill me in on the "rules"?

they are so cool, those resonators, is it possible to get the vibrato without it making that un-attractice scraping sound?
StopTheMoti0n 3 years ago
i like that sound
Metsuck2 2 years ago
im talking about the sound thhat sounds like when you scrape your nails on a table really fast, the vibrato with a slide
StopTheMoti0n 2 years ago
you could use a glass slide instead of a metal one. I like the scrapey sound personally as well.... adds character
greegomileego 2 years ago 2
ok good deal, ive used glass slides before and i didn't experience that, i didn't know if the slides were supposed to do that

I just started playing guitar. I have a regular 6 string. Can a six string recreate the country sounding tune your resonatior has?
ARVNpistola313 3 years ago
Yes, you can play a tune like this on a standard 6 string. I am playing this resonator guitar in standard tuning so other than the tone being different because of the resonator cone the music would sound the same. Hope that helps

Thanks i really like the western sound. Or is it blues? I just stopped listening to hip hop so i'm exploring other genres now.

Are you using any type of scales or just all from the head?
BLuEsHayZee 3 years ago
It's all improvised although I "see" a lot of chord forms and voicings on the fret board and in my head more so than any scales.
JeffSennGuitars 3 years ago
This comment has received too many negative votes show
by any chance you play real guitar? If so are there any major differences? I only seem to notice the tuning, the slide, and the picking technique.
