no they wernt copying elvis most of the early rnr rnb singers all started out on sam phillips sun label hound dog was originarly recorded by big mamma thornton+elvis covered it years late not only did elvis play guitar+sing+dance he also wrote a songs+tothis day he is the greatest preformer the werld has ever seen
I love the originals, and there are simply no replacements. Yet if you really love this music you should checkout the Robert Gordon Link Wray versions. Nobody though can take less than 120 seconds and turn it into pure high energy rock and roll like Eddie Cochran. Another case of only the good die young!

LOL. Learn some music history first. Not putting you down but everyone knows guys like Eddie (and I love Eddie) and Gene Vincent totally, 100% coppied Elvis and tried soooo hard to sound like Elvis. That Presley sound totally blew the doors down in early 1955 (early Sun Records). Eddie and Vincent were extremely talented, but Elvis was the First and "Still" King of Rock N Roll. It's as simple as that and you can deny it all you want but you can't change history buddie. LOL
Sure, they were copying Elvis, but interestingly enough, all of the Elvis songs that I seem to like were covers of Little Richard, Chuck Berry, et. al, and some now lesser known artists-- where do you think Hound Dog came from?
He had his own act and sound that set him apart, but he wasn't 100% original.. so, in conclusion, who cares? In music, everybody is coping somebody.

You are 100% correct, Elvis did cover Little Richard, Cuck Berry, and most black artist of his time. thats what made him so important, he brought black R&B to the forefront. Yes, he did not write his own stuff and even his early sun records which I consider some of the best - pure Rock n Roll records ever produced were also cover! Hey, you won't get me to say anything bad about Eddie, he's one of my all time favorites, but as John Lenon once said.."before Elvis there was Nothing."

hvymtisteve- you gotta listen to not only Elvis' Sun recordings, but the also stuff he recorded thru 1959. I hope you're not just judging Elvis on his hit songs like All Shook Up and Love Me Tender- the guy had lesser known songs on his albums that were flat out rockers. Many were original songs written for Presley
In music, everybody is coping somebody
