the way of the sword is the closest to a duel you can get, the way of cutting is kinda formal, of course it's needed but it's not as important as technique and spirit, found in kendo, well whatever there's no more "real" warriors coz now it's peace, but I'm just saying it's the closest thing to a real duel ^^

No, the hilt (known as the tsuka when referring to katana) is carved from wood and doesn't have the same weight as the blade. However, most modern nihonto are relatively light and well balanced. Were you referring to balance point of the blade?

Yeah, that is true... You should be able to balance the blade on a point just above the tsuba (the guard). Most would probably balance on some point between 7-12 cm above the tsuba. In reference to your earlier comment, I thought you meant the actual weight of the blade being equal to weight of the tsuka, but I understand now that you meant the balance of the blade. =)

yeah, his quick reflexes save him from a slicing. The samurai girl did get hit but not by the blade - it was the hilt which is still heavy and and with the momentum behind enough to cause a bit of pain.
