What's with all the comments about "No way an 8th grader can throw a 12 pound 41 feet". Do people realize Freshman in HS throw over 50 all the time, and some (like Vena) eclipse 60?
Greg T who represented the US in the 88 Olympics. He spun. He taught us High Schoolers how to both spin and glide, I chose to glide as I was almost 6' 5" as a Senior.
Allright im sick of knowing i can throw shot but getting 2nd and third, i am losing by 4 feet i only throw 37 feet and i get angry, does the fact the i don't keep my arm tucked in have to do with the fact that i dont throw as far, i am sure i can outbench the kid by doing 215 and dquatting 275 but i am very competitive and i don't like losing, any suggestions?
@CxCPromoter - Don't give up. Technique is almost more important than strength. Watch videos online, read books, and borrow technique videos from coaches/other athletes. Become a student of the sport, and you will surely improve. Your hard work/homework WILL pay off, but you have to be patient and persistent.
@CxCPromoter - I'm not 100% sure what you mean by keeping your arm tucked in, but it could factor in if you're not blocking (left arm at the end if you're a righty), or if you take the shot put out of your neck. Squats are more important than bench btw.
duhh, some kid at the bottom but hes in 8th throwing 32 and I was in 7th grade back in the day throwing 38. But I guess a 6" tall 7th grader should throw that far:p
my shotput and discus coach threw at UVA on a full scholarship there hammer there and his dad coaches our hammer, he was an ncaa champion think at northeastern unviersity
the record at my middle school is 47"8 and when i was in 8th grade i threw 45"5..its all about where you grow up kid its a matter of how bad a person wants something
its not hard if your big enough. an 8 pound ball for a big kid can be easily thrown 4 feet. theres an 8th grader where i go that got moved up to varsity football as a 9th grader because hes 6'5 260
not necessarily, he had a good switch and a good power position, only thing really is he could work on widening his feet a bit and lowering his back when starting the glide
Im just starting out in shot put i have a meet on friday so far I suck i just got a 22.1 1/2 feet I hope I get better before fir. good vid just that it looks his kick wasnt strong enough so he pushed off with his first foot and lost his balance
Thanks Matt. I wasn't planning on throwing that day, but my kids challenged me to do so since there was another coach throwing. I was a glider in H.S., rotation guy in college, and back to glide for my "weekend warrior" throws.

coaching and being able to do it are two different things plus running shoes and jeanhs are not the best to throw in...give em a break
