Also, good news for my videos: I finally got DosBox to work again somewhat, enough to record more footage. As soon as I can get the new videos uploaded, I have re-recorded some early parts of this game with better sound (16-bit digital instead of 8-bit) and less frame skip (slightly better video).
To run without CDs, copy both CDs to two folders in C:\dosgames labeled CWCD1 and CWCD2 respectively. Start Dosbox and type the following. Do not type the //comments//.
mount c c:\dosgames
mount d c:\dosgames\CWCD1 -t cdrom //to mount the virtual CD1 files//
d: //to change to the virtual CD drive//
install
exit
Go to c:\dosgames\CHESSWAR and open the CHESSWAR.CFG configuration file. Under the [INSTALL] section, change CD2 = D:\CHESSWAR to CD2 = E:\CHESSWAR. Save the file and close.
To run with CDs after installation, insert CD1 or CD2 into cdrom drive, open Dosbox and type the following lines. Do not type in the //comment sections//.
mount c c:\dosgames //to mount the virtual hard drive labeled c//
mount d e: -t cdrom //to mount the virtual cdrom drive labeled d//
c: //to change to virtual hard drive//
cd chesswar //to change directories to the CHESSWAR folder within c:\dosgames//
To install and run with CDs, insert CD1 into CD player (drive e: on My Computer, substitute your own drive letter). Start Dosbox and type the following lines. Do not type in the //comment sections//.
mount c c:\dosgames //to mount the virtual hard drive labeled c//
mount d e: -t cdrom //to mount the virtual cdrom drive labeled d//
d: //to change to the virtual cdrom drive//
install //to install Chess Wars into the C:\dosgames folder and set up sound//
Schlossritter, for some reason the word not did not come about when i sent you that last comment so what i really meant was ... i am not trying to rush you with anything and especially with getting more videos of this game on this site ... even though, i would like to see it! I am very sorry about my previous comment to you but like i said, the word not did not come about and i know i keyed it in so i don't want you to think any different from what i am telling you right now.
No problem. There's not much I can do with the videos right now anyway. Along with my recording problems, I'm having trouble even getting my computer's sound to work at all (doh). Stay tuned.
I would love to play this game on my computer but it seems to me that my operating system is too new for this old game ... i wish i had windows 95 as an operating system for this game because this game looks so cool for a chess game.
Yes, i know you replied to my PM as well as my comment here and i did what you said and i still cannot get this game to work on my computer. Maybe there is something i need to do to make the cd-roms be detectable in dosbox since dosbox does not detect a cd-rom in the cd-rom drive. Maybe a command or something ... i really don't know. I tried other dos games with dosbox and they all worked but i did not need to use a cd-rom with any of them so that can be telling you something
Yes, you need to use the Mount command to tell DosBox where the CD drive is (or have D-Fend set it up). Also, you may need to edit the game's chesswar.cfg file to use the correct drive letter that DosBox has mounted (not necessarily the same letter as the drive is listed as in Windows), or better yet run the installer exe from DosBox once you have it set up properly. I may not be explaining well, so your best bet is to ask about running CD based games at the forum link I sent you.
Thanks for trying to help me in getting this game to work for me ... i really do appreciate your helping for me. I finally got it to work and i was playing it for hours and i will play it some more of course too. I love the fight scenes when the chess pieces get's captured in the game and i know you had that option off in this video so it did not show in this video. I also saw the endings for white and black when the kings get's checkmated ... awesome movie for a game!
Cool, glad I could help. I have some of the live action scenes uploaded to my channel, but I have to straighten out some technical issues before I can transfer the rest. The reason I didn't record the scenes and gameplay at the same time has to do with DosBox starting a new recording every time the screen changes.
I am trying to rush you in getting every possible video of this game but do you have any idea when you will be able to get all the live action scenes of the chess pieces getting captured in this game and of course the 2 endings of the white king and the black king getting checkmated on this site?
@adroitgenius2 The only way to get it to work is to mount the cdrom drive first and then mount the hard drive next so you will type this command first ... mount d d:\ -t cdrom (if the d: drive is the letter of your cdrom drive as an example) and then you mount the hard drive (most often, it's the c drive) to where you got the game installed on the computer and then you can play chess from the cdrom disks.
@adroitgenius2 First of all, install the game from the first cdrom disk if you haven't already and then have either cdrom disk 1 or disk 2 in the cdrom drive at all times when trying to play the game. Second of all, make sure that the d: drive is the letter of your cdrom drive before mounting the cdrom drive to play the game ... if it's another drive letter, use that other drive letter instead and then mount the hard drive right afterwards.
I already got this game on 2 cd-roms for the pc but i cannot run the game with my windows vista operating system because this is a dos game and my operating system does not support fullscreen mode so i have to try to run this game without using windows vista. I tried running this game with the dosbox emulator but it seems to me that dosbox cannot run this game on my computer since it did not work for me either ... the game couldn't detect the cd-rom in the cd-rom drive.
This game is so cheesy but my daughter loves it :-)

I saw that there are finally copies on eBay and Amazon, but some tend to be expensive due to the rarity of the game.
I've also uploaded a copy to a private site, so PM me if you are interested in hearing about it.

Well, notice how low I set the AI? This behavior will change when I demo higher levels.
I'm not very good either, as I don't think I can even beat the Amatuer (medium) difficulty.
