How do we know about how complex the Neanderthal language was? Why is it assumed that they did not have language skills? Is it because they lived in small family groups and didn't interact much with others? And do we know that for sure? They must have had to meet with other groups in order to find mates from time to time.

Neanderthals and Cro-magnon must have interbred, and it would appear since non-African humans today do have Neanderthal DNA that it must have been successful to a point. Given the scarcity of people at that time, women would have been hard to find.  My theory is that women were probably captured during conflicts or they may have been traded for goods or hunting rights.
