  • This guy is such a tool lol

  • What drives someone to complain on facebook?

  • That serve was short, dude.

  • Where are your glasses? I wouldn't drive serve down the line without them

  • 4 seconds.....LOLOLOLOL...looks like a doctor's exam for your prostate? LOLOLOL

  • the video should be renamed "Mechanics of Drive Serve" -- to satisfy all of the people complaining about the legality of this guy's serve

  • bad serve though, it didnt cross the line

  • He is demonstrating an illegal serve. The head of the racquet goes way over the 2nd line from the wall. That line cannot be crossed by the racquet at all is you are driving the ball down the line as he did. That is the sole purpose of that line so that servers have to stand back a little and not intentionally screen the ball on drive serves

  • All the jackasses complaining about it being short are missing everything this video has to teach. He is teaching racquet and feet movement for the serve. Sure he could have filmed it over and over to get a perfect drive serve, but this is a free video. He tells the rules in a video before this one so he clearly understands them, to even suggest that he doesn't shows how big of an a-hole some youtubelosers can be.

  • @gweller dude, they are not missing the point. they just don't wanna learn anything because they think they are so much better.

  • it was short wat a great example

  • lol

  • In case anyone is confused, when you serve, it's illegal to swing your racquet through the imaginary planes that extend upwards from the lines that run perpendicular to the front wall. More specifically, the rule only applies to hard serves that stay close to the side wall. (AKA drive serves down the line)

For righties, that means you can't stand too close to the right wall when you serve down the line. Lefties, look out for the left wall.

  • is it just me or are there lots of spliced images in this vid? maybe im seeing a three story tall penis but im not sure

  • Shawn Royster,

I like what you are doing for the game, I served many years oversees all those years i had to pay for instructional videos to learn and teach the game so I would have someone to play with especially when deployed.

I just want to say thank you for these videos and bringing the game forward! If the game is ever to become as big as tennis then we need to share our experiences with the rest of the world.

My only complaint is the US Championships have to be in H.D. TV.

  • thats awesome!! my dad is also military and he plays racquetball. out of nowhere i though i should try it

i love the game now! and these videos helped me so much. no im getting friends from my school to come out and try to get involved.

  • Fault.

  • I think most of the aspects are right on, nice demo except the drive zone was viloated, and, it was short. Did he even review the segement before he sent it in? No, he sure did not! LOL

  • Wow, I thought he was just providing a demo on technique, he explained the violations in other segments.

I hope others aren't as literal as yourself and learned the game as intended. This guy is doing something good for the game on the social medias that can make the game bigger.

  • Thank you so much for all of your tips. Great presentation. Easy to follow even by the beginners like me. I don't understand why these people are leaving hateful comments??? You are giving great tips on the technique. Yes the serve was short, but that is not the point in this video. This is why humans have wars; you are ready to bark at someone who's helping you. Unbelievable. Keep up the good work and thank you.

  • I imagine it would be difficult to film a good serve without breaking the plane of the service zone. And I doubt he saw that his serve was short. If anyone's to blame, blame the person filming this thing for not letting him know.

  • "Apparently you don't have to follow the rules like "the rest of us."

This is typical twentieth century American "whitey knows best" mentality. "

-- I've heard of reading things into a statement, but this takes the cake.

  • two things. first of all it was an illegal serve because he drove it down the right lane and he was in the right lane. secondly, he doesn't use his hips on the serve =(

  • also isn't the ball supposed to pass the short line on a serve?

    cause his didn't

  • SHORT SERVE!!!!!!

  • why is everyone hating so bad...geez take it easy people so quick to hate

  • Yeah....for those of you who say he doesnt know how to play. This is Shawn Royster. He's sponsored by Ektelon, plays on the IRT, and also runs Royster Productions, which covers most of the pro racquetball tournaments. He knows how to play. Even pros serve short sometimes.

  • Shawn does NOT play on the IRT tour. Go to the IRT website, click on rankings and it shows the top 349. He's not there.

He's announced racquetball for tennis channel, he has a part in WOR (world outdoor racquetball), and by everyone's account seems to be a very nice guy.

He's just a little clueless when it comes to TEACHING racquetball. This is a clear violation of the drive serve zones rule, and I'm amazed that he didn't realize it. His other videos are just as bad, sadly.

  • I watched this video expecting excellence and wow - I was blown away. The professionalism astounds me. We are in the presence of ultimate wisdom - just fantastic skill. You have taken racquetball from a sport to an artform.

  • love the "dive serve" pose! btw...the serve was short. LOL

  • love the "drive serve" pose...classic !

  • The official rules state that until the ball is stuck, the player, racquet and ball cannot break the 3-foot drive service zone. This person has broken the zone with his body, racquet and ball!!!

His serve is consider a fault serve. There are 2 fault serves before "side out", unless he is playing "open level" (which I doubt).

  • It's amazing that he's put so many instructional videos on youtube when he has NO IDEA how to play properly.

Now he's teaching fault serves lol. I'm just blown away by this.

  • He's a pro, teaching technique. We all know its a short serve, sonny.

You are blown away easily. Bye.

  • So you're saying it's a good idea that a "pro" posts a video showing people how to hit a drive serve, in which he hits a short serve, that is also an illegal serve?

It would be like Lebron James posting a video on how to shoot free throws, where he steps over the free throw line during his shot and then puts up an air ball.

I'm sorry, this video needs to go. I want people to learn how to play racquetball the right way. This is confusing for new people to the game. Sonny.

  • Read the rule right. He didn't "break" the zone. You're foot has to completely leave the zone. He's fine other than it's short.

  • I'm a certified instructor, and part of my certification was studying and being tested on the rules of racquetball. This is a drive serve violation, clearly. I'm sorry you don't understand the rules.

His racquet broke the plane of the drive serve line while he hit a ball to the same side of the court. Clear as a bell. No room for argument. And of course it was short.

Sad that you would call someone an idiot over this. LOL.

  • Tim,

One reason people run from the game is, players are proprietary and exhibit an elitist attitude.

This video can be a teaching tool and your comments could serve as a teachable moment for beginners and as an instructor you should promote the game otherwise you've wasted your time and money becoming an instructor!

Have fun promote the game don't kill it!

  • I'm pretty sure my comments were misunderstood. I was replying to another comment, not to Shawn Royster himself. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

I disagree that this video is healthy for beginners who should be focusing on proper technique as well as following the rules. That's why so many people have pointed out the fault serve, not just myself.

I do agree with you that having someone teach racquetball over youtube is excellent for the game. That's why I do it too. 8-)

    Take care.

  • I agree! Take a look at the 2008 Championships Rocky Carson was called on that two or three times.

  • dude sucks

  • This would be a good video if you didn't fault on your serve and break the 3 foot plane with your racquet. You might want to learn the rules before you teach.

  • break 3 foot pane w racquet? please enlighten :)

  • I believe he's saying that if you hit a serve inside the 3-foot zone on either wall (designated by a line on both sides) , it can't stay in that zone. In the video, he hits the ball inside that zone, which is legal, but it stays in that zone, which is illegal. Otherwise, a good video.

  • I still don't get it. "He hits the ball inside that zone, but it stays in that zone" What zone?

  • The drive service zone. On the racquetball court, there are four red lines parallel to the side walls. The outer ones are for doubles use. The two inner ones make up the drive service zone. If you are serving in between these lines, the ball, racquet or body cannot cross that line anytime during the serve. This rule was instated to prevent players from serving right next to the wall and essentially hitting a screen serve.

  • his serve was fine other than inside the line. If you really don't get the idea from this you're just an idiot.

  • For real. best comment on this vid. ha. He was just stating the basics. DUH. THanks.

  • He cracks me up

  • SHORT!!!!

    FAULT ONE!!!!

    great vid tho.

  • that would be a SHORT drive serve...
