I love this version of this song...I've never been one for the old style country songs, and while Johnny Cash is undeniably a music legend, his style of music simply isn't to my taste. Dave taking this beautiful song and wrapping the lyrics around a #36/Everyday style tune make it perfect for me. And Emmylou Harris's voice is obviously astounding.
And to everyone who's arguing: You either like it or you don't. Give your opinion and respect everyone else's.
I saw a version on cmt or something, a few years a ago, where he said that he could never do this song justice, and that he is lucky for the beautiful Emmy to accompany him, and make it the tune it should be.
Hoo boy. Don't remember hearing anything come together quite so brilliantly. Dave Matthews' voice here makes me think of a dam that's about to burst, a volcano that's trying to keep from erupting, the above-the-surface 10 percent of an slowly drifting iceberg that would sink a Titanic. Emmylou's voice at its most ethereal, curling like tendrils around the trunk of a giant oak. The whole staging of it too, darkness-of-the-grave lighting, Emmylou's funereal slip of a dress. I was deeply affected.
Hey WALBRO3, music is art and therefore it is all opinion. So...i think it would be better to say "I'm not a Dave Matthews fan" instead of labeling it as crap. Don'tcha think? Just say "i wasn't 1 of the 90,000 people @ DMB's Central Park show, and i won't be @ any of the sold-out STADIUM shows either." STADIUM after STADIUM, we all love crap.
You can find a great DMB recording of this song on the GORGE BOX SET (6 CD's over 3 nights). 3rd night encore (CD #6) Dave and Leroi play it together
Dave Matthews RUINED this song. Johhny barely did it justice and he knocked it out of the park compared to DM. Lefty Frizzell owns this song: no debate. I did hear Joan Baez sing this once and even though intended to be sang by a male, she drove a stake through my soul with it just as Lefty had. I know Dave has some REALLY loyal fans, but this is the same thing that spewed out of his tour bus... that's why he admitted in the video he needed Emmylou to get it right, even she couldnt save him.
Extremely rude. This is not shit. Just the song taken and changed which is much harder then just copying. I respect your opinion but please don't slam people who have worked hard and earned respect from Johnny Cash. Each version of the song brings it in a new light.
JackBabsDMB & ACompleteUnknown: I will agree that the song standing alone is great, just not when Dave Matthews sings it. Whether or not Johnny Cash respected Dave, or if he worked harder than any other artist, or if you are someone who listens to DM and uses the word "bullocks" to defend bad music from said artist... I find almost all his music unbearable. Being respected, working hard, and having loyal fans does not make his music good. You won't change my opinion and I wont change yours:)
YES!!!! thank you for being another person on the Internet who realizes that nobody is going to change someone's opinion with YouTube comments. Even though we may disagree, we're not going to convince each other of anything, because who the hell are we? in any case, thought i'd thank you for that little bit of relief on this mess of a community that is YouTube.
The beauty of Dave's version is that it's different. He is not a folk singer, so he's not going to try to emulate a folk style that can't possibly sound better than the original. This version isn't his best though, he did it live at The Gorge and the vocals have MUCH more emotion and cover a bigger range; I'd really recommend checking it out.
Awesome to see an artist make a song his own, no my cup of tea though, I can't get past the Johnny Cash version no matter how hard I try. Again, I like what Dave Matthews is doing, good luck to the guy.
redhat1944, i suppose you speak on behalf of the millions and millions of people who cherish dave and emmylou's music? who are u to say that it didn't work, the long ovation after the song must have given that away?
dave matthews and emmylou harris are two great artists who do this song to pay tribute to johnny cash. cash did this this song great and he obviously cherished it enough to cover it. Danny Dill and Marijohn Wilkin must have been proud of that.
the autonomy of art is what makes this song so special, once art is made, it's really not the artists anymore, everyone takes art differently meaning they can relate to it in a different way.
"Untalented preppy boy"? You are an idiot. Let me guess, you are a theater major, probably write your own blog and only listen to music if its "underground." Dave rocks and Cash is a god.
Your an idiot. Johnny Cash is great, but he didn't write this. Cash did many covers. This is probably the worst version I heard of this. Davey doesn't even give props to the right people. Mathews: Untalented preppy boy who is only popular because frat boys think he looks like one of them.
Screw such people as Joan Baez and Danny Dill and marjohn Johnny made this song and he sings it good so dont ever talk anything different from johnny cash
This song was not written by Johnny Cash. Although popularized by people such as Johnny Cash and Joan Baez, it was actually written by Danny Dill and Marijohn Wilkin sometime around 1958-1960.
I heard Dave Matthews sing this song at an outdoor concert once years ago. I was completely blown away I'll never forget it. Beautiful beautiful
