I never did get why every has a problem with this ending. It might have a different tone than the rest of the movie but that's the point I think. I actually liked it.
OMG! that dialogue is on par with the original resident evil game :O i am shocked that this was even left in and i am so glad i watched the directoirs cut first. truely terrible.
@spacecoke Comparing Blade Runner's dialogue to Resident Evil is like comparing a firmly-built house made out of concrete and plated in solid gold to a dog poo in a refridgerator box.
how does this even make sense? hell harrison ford sounds sarcastic. it sounds like the producers hastily wrote in a happy ending, in like five minutes.
From future noir to....panoramic mountain scenes? Evidently the studio did not credit the audience with being able to pay attention and decided the only thing to do was beat it to death with a stick. Both endings have their merits, but the one on the "Director's Cut" is Ridley Scott's--and Philip K. Dick's.
I have heard that Harrison Ford deliberately did the narration badly, hoping it would not be be used. Would like to see the original theatrical cut with no narration for comparison.
Oh god, this is horrific. I think you can actually hear how much Harrison Ford hated himself at that moment. I don't think he had been that pissed since he was forced to do the Star Wars Holiday Special. I'm surprised he didn't use his bullwhip on whoever made him do this. I cannot press the thumbs down button enough times.
Always found both endings wrong. I don't like the way it cuts out in the later versions, maybe some final shots of Los Angeles would have been better? And find the theme music very comic-book like I can't explain it, love it as a piece, but should have been half the tempo and a little darker for me :)
I'm sorry, I thought the entire world was a raining, overpopulated, chemical spewing corporate noir cesspool...I guess I was wrong...I guess it's really very pretty. All it takes is one quick drive to Overlook Hotel...
lol the studio really went out of their way to cornball this up. it's just so completely unnecessary, there was already a happy ending in the story. The two replicants (deckard) run off into the sunset after they've proven themselves "more human than human" contrasted against the downtrodden soulless actual humans. Sure, they're mortal and will "expire" - but then again, who doesn't?
i have only ever known the directors cut, this scene makes me glad for that, like holy..forget the mystery just have him say, "oh and everything's going to be okay folks, the end!" lol wow....
Also I remember how exhilirating it was in the theatre and the audience reaction when after all the rain and darkness of two hours suddenly cuts to this offworld beauty.
Loved this ending..very noirish , romantic, and philosophical....and bitter sweet..lots of melancholy...very much a guys movie..always thought that they had gone off world. Its sad that this version with the very cool and quotable voice over was panned by critics..but this is the version that became a cult classic on cable and led to the first directors cut..where the critics who didn't get it the first time could backtrack blaming the voice over and ending..happens when movies become classics.
Both endings have their virtues. Best part of both endings is... the music over the credits! Vangelis goes to town and provides the perfect exclamation point for what came before. Great techno arrangement and timing to ornament very basic 4-note theme. Great music for the entire film... one of those "can't imagine it any other way" scores.
The theatrical Dolby stereo original release wins it closes nicely over the valley. The directors cut is too abrupt of an ending. This version rules! Deckard is human!
Complete with the voice-over by Harrison Ford's character "Rick Deckard" (as it should be throughout the entire film).
Best alternative / conclusion to the dark, dreary, dystopian metropolis in which 99% of the film takes place.
Nice to see that Deckard and Rachael are able to escape that depressing atmosphere and enjoy the rich bucolic scenery and the warm glow of sunshine upon themselves. Who knows what lies ahead for them? :-)
@trollcrusher242 I think it's a horrible ending. Makes me want to barf. The film isn't about escaping from the city to live in the country, it about what makes someone a human. Not to mention that this ending removes the twist at the end that Deckard is a replicant, is he's being hunted.
i dont like the idea Deckard is a replicant, i like this ending more than the director's cut, im sorry im a HUGE fan of this movie, is my favorite movie of all time, but i like this ending more than the 1992.
Stupid ending alright....if Los Angeles has a population of over 100 million, then there must be at least dozen other megacities around the globe pumping fire and petro-chemical into the stratosphere 24-7, so there can't be any pristine countryside left in North America. Then again, they could have sneaked onto a terra-formed off world colony. But it's still a cheesy let-down to the rest of the movie
This is intresting, is should say that i dont beleive films have to have happy or sad endings just ones true to whatever the story set out to tell. This was a wonderful ending to a noir great. But i can c y directr cut it. this film begun w intent of noir but ended up being deeper and trancending the limited genre. This ending pulls the film down 2 or reminds us this is just noir. The official film, we are given a less tidy, but true-er summation of life and meaning.

Much prefer the final cut ending. has a bit more meaning where as this one, they just tried to tac on a happy ending. its not bad, just not as good as final cut which leaves the question in your head
I for one .... *LOVE* this ending. It is the only scene in the film that is shot in natural sunlight as the entire movie is filmed in darkness / twilight. It ends the film on an upnote and is much, much better than the truncated version whereby the film ends so abruptly after Deckard and Rachael enter the lift / elevator. Makes me think that the both of them went on to live a happy (and long) life together. The nature scenes act as a counterweight to the earlier claustrophobic city scenes.
Nope. No joke. Prefer this ending versus the abrupt ending of the movie with Deckard and Rachael as they enter the elevator.
If you were around in 1982 (more likely not ... still a twinkle in your parents eyes I suspect), this ending was the ORIGINAL ending as shown in theaters worldwide. It was only with the release of the "Director's Cut" that the "cold ending" was introduced.
Check the facts over on the IMDB entry for Blade Runner.
I was looking at the comments and thinking "Wow, these guys must be exaggerating" but...oh god...that ending is pretty bad. Feels very forced "OH WAIT SHES SPECIAL, she DOES live, Tyrell told me off screen"
Besides the REAL ending leaves open the possibility of a happy ending, a short lived one.
i thought the scene between roy and tyrell made it clear that it wasnt possible to make replicants w/o termination dates? or were those only replicants up to roy's generation...
You don't understand Blade Runner's universe, obviously. Replicants CAN be made to not have expiration dates. Before the big uprising that led to Reps being outlawed on Earth, the off-world Replicants were actually immortal androids, I believe. Then, when their rebellion occurred, Tyrell Corp set expiration dates on every Rep they made after.
Harrison Ford actually siad he didn't intentionally perform it bad. He said he gave it the best he could, but that his efforts only meant so much because the voiceover dialogue was written so poorly. Nobody was saying it out loud, but the whole purpose of the voiceover dialogue was to "dumb the movie down," because the producers were afraid no one was going to be able to understand it otherwise.
Why? When I saw Bladerunner, it was actually a bit refreshing to cut away from the depressing dystopia of the movie. The movie is a masterpiece, don't get me wrong, but having a dark ending to the movie was like the ending of the Rurouni Kenshin anime, in which, as quoted by the creator, "Kenshin went through all this horrible shit, and then he dies horribly."
It was nice to just watch Deckard, who'd been through hell and back, get some solace at the end.
Agreed, but at the same time, it feels out of place. Besides, the other ending isn't necessarily unhappy--it actually kind of leaves you to make up your own conclusion. Who knows, maybe they did live happily after they got out of that elevator (despite learning he's a Replicant). In this ending, though, it's forced down your throat, like the producers were trying to shout, "LOOK! HE'S HAPPY, HE'S HAPPY! SEE! LOOK!" The producers really went out of their way to "dumb the movie down," imo.
@SickBritKid Dude, its not a happy movie, Its dark and its depressing, this was just so mainstream audiences would like it. The voiceover was horribly written by someone who wasn't even trying. And what's this saying? Everywhere is polluted to shitcake except the California coastline? It doesn't fit with the movie at all. Ridely Scott was embarrassed about it. And also, Tyrell pointed out that it isnt possible to make a replecant without a limited lifespan, how did they make Rachel?
1. The movie didn't establish that the entire world was a complete wasteland, just that the nuclear wars had wiped out life on Earth. Who knows, perhaps scientists were working to rebuild Earth's ecology.
2. I know it's not a happy movie. Thing is, this movie is still a damn noir and noirs, IMO, need a decent ending for the characters.
3. Reps before the Uprising had no expiration date. It was only after they were outlawed on Earth that Tyrell Corp put on the 5-year death.
1. Oh really? Then why is everyone leaving the world? The idea is that science is helping the corporations rather than the people. e.g. JF Sebastian is living as an old man when really he's only in his 20s. And how does in establish the nuclear wars thing?
2. I have no idea what you just said but I bet its easily debatable
3. That is a fair point but I still dont like this ending
1. I was taking a guess, honestly. Perhaps people are leaving because most of the world is uninhabitable, leaving them to have to seek a better life off-world. So yeah, science may not be doing much, but maybe it is. It's never clearly explained.
2. You're familiar with the Noir genre of movies? Like the Maltese Falcon or Casablanca? That's what I meant.
I never did get why every has a problem with this ending. It might have a different tone than the rest of the movie but that's the point I think. I actually liked it.

Everyone has their opinion on either of Blade Runner's endings.
I prefer this one as it is the original version that I saw when I first viewed this movie. Better of the two endings.
The ending where they get on the elevator is just too truncated and leaves the viewer with the feeling "Is that it?!!!"
Best wishes as you watch your Director's Cut Edition of Blade Runner. :-)
