My question is could you use them while driving in the dark, what is the range like?

I've got them, and I love 'em!

When you darken a room and try to find an object, you won't find it, but when i turn on NVG's I can just see the room normally with everything in it!

Only two anoying things are:

1. The straps. It takes a while to adjust them perfectly.

2. Everything appears closer :(

You can buy these for 50 bucks at Toys R Us. The Company that makes them (Jakks Pacific) also makes a generic version called the EyeClops Night Vision Infrared Stealth Goggles. They have a different look, but use the same parts "under the hood". If you just want a novelty NVG I'd just go with the 50 dollar version, and give up the MW2 logo.

The MW2 one seems to have a centered display and adjustable magnification lenses in front of both eyes which enlarge the image.

The eyeclops has no magnification and the tiny display is on the right side so only for the right eye ! T

The left eye recieves no night vision at all but has a little flap instead which you can open so you can see where you're going when the goggles are off.

So the MW2 is a slightly improved version of the Eyeclops. ;-)

i got the prestige edition solely for these *who didnt?? lol* and i was kinda disappointed at first until i realized it has a focus wheel on it *dur hur hur*, so now i'm satisfied with them =] they're so cool, not practical but an awesome little toy for late night shenanigans. plus its funny to watch ur friends walk around like they're on new feet, u lose ur depth perception so much when u have em on.

Military googles of nv generation 3 can cost up to € 5000 per unit.

The MW2 one is a generation 0/1 which is the cheapest night vision solution on the markets.

1970's technology so to say but still produced for hunters because of the attractive price.

Lifetime of a gen 1 electron tube is about 1000 to 2000 hours which is not very much but normal.

I dont know what the generation 4 googles cost as they are not available on the civil market and only available to the military.

Generation 0 Infrared light supported nightvision was available even earlier when Germany equipped Panther tanks with first systems of this kind near the end of ww2.

By 1945 there was also a first system for night vision rifle scopes which functioned in connection with a huge IR searchlight on top of the scope for which the soldier had to carry a whole electric generator on his back :-D

No green glass here. They operate via a small CCD camera with no IR cut filter and a mini LCD screen. Scene illumination is via the on board IR LEDs. The green colouration comes from switching the white balance function on the camera to a predetermined level. The range isn't astounding but for a novelty, these things are suprisingly functional.
