Justine behaved very badly that day. Serena was correct. Justine did it because she wanted to send a message that she would not be intimidated by her, but it is very poor sportsmanship. Looking back, Justine should have been suspended from playing Wimbledon that year.
justine basically cheated cause she knew she was going to lose , and serena handed justine the match by not staying on top of justine she let her emotions get the best of her and lost the match it costed serena her 5th major in a row but she got her revenge at wimbledon other then that i wish justine was still around cause tennis is not what it use to be without her i just love watching her game cause she played almost like FEDERER.
All the aggression that Serena has displayed on court clearly shows who has bad sportsmanship. Serena threatend a line judge in 2009 (US Open semi final vs Cljsters) and only recently had a similiar situation (again at the US Open, this time in the final vs Stosur). If there's a player out there with bad sportsmanship, it's Serena.

If the person receiving a serve isn't ready and holds up a hand to ask for more time, and a server is already engaged in a service motion, a let must be played. It's a standard rule in tennis.
The same rationale is applied if paper flew on the court: it wouldn't affect her motion, but a let would be played.
come on, people it's not that much of a big deal, it's not like Serena was down 0-30 on her service game, she led 4-2 30-0 and is known to be the toughest player mentally on the WTA tour, she lost that match fair and square as proven by further loses to Henin afterwards.

I think justine should tell the umpire about raising her hand, but the difference is not that big at all when compared to other incidences e.g.2004 the unfair call from the umpire. Serena's first serve went in the net; which is a fault. Justine did have her hand up and it is the job of the chair umpire to watch both server and receiver through each and every point in a tennis match. I believe that when a server serves and his/her opponent holds his/her hand up (not ready to receive serve), the server usually notices and restarts the serve; however, when the server serves, despite knowing, the chair umpire tells the server to restart the serve.

@kimskis When someone puts their hand up during your serve it means that they are not ready to return the serve. The debate is about whether or not Serena saw Justine's hand. If she did, it can be argued that she missed her serve due to being thrown off by Justine's gesture. In such an instance, she would be entitled to make another first serve, as "the hand" would have acted as a hindrance. Prior to the hand incident, Serena was up 4-2 in the final set. She would up losing the set.

I personally hate Serena and am naturally predispositioned against her, but it is entirely possible that she was distracted by Justine's hand, thinking she wasn't ready to receive, and that's why her serve went into the net. Justine did cheat, passively, by not admitting that her hand had been raised. This would have given Serena two serves.

@markisb62 I won't speculate about what Serena or Justine knew (and unless you happen to be either Serena or Justine perhaps you shouldn't either). What effect Justine's hand had is moot. If the person receiving a serve isn't ready and holds up a hand to ask for more time, and a server is already engaged in a service motion, a let must be played. It's a standard rule in tennis.
The same rationale is applied if paper flew on the court: it wouldn't affect her motion, but a let would be played.

dont lie, Serena never "whooped" Henin 80 % of the time, in fact she barely leads the h2h 8-6, with a mere 2-5 in 2003-2007, that is Henin's best years including a 3-0 in only 2007 in Slams across 3 surfaces. Even with a 6-8 deficit Henin still leads 4-3 in Slam meetings

I think justine should tell the umpire about raising her hand, but the difference is not that big at all when compared to other incidences e.g.2004 the unfair call from the umpire. @janjan55555 This video is entitled "The Hand Incident", not FO 2003, SF. Justine played a wonderful match, no doubt. However you and others are not sticking to the point of the video. It would also be to your benefit not to assume that all those who disagree with you have no intelligence.

@Leomerya12 If u gonna wine and complaint how justine got "carried" by that one point then u are mistaken, Serena had her chance and lost it by herself not by some halfass incident. Besides if u rewatch the entire match U WOULD notice that the french crowd was boo'ing all over the place not only for 'the hand' so saying that she lost focus cuz of that one point us just an excuse!!!Check the entire match published by 'kumarravichandran" in parts and then u will notice why Serena lost

@Leomerya12 :D My message is just in general is; why would Serena try to get a first service if the ball was in :P I mean replay the vid in slowmo and notice how Henin puts up her hand 3 seconds into the TOSS. I have seen alot of interrupts(Kanye being first :P) but to see that one u have to be a robot. So she was trying to cheat her way out of it:P That's my message :)

Serena's first serve went in the net; which is a fault. Justine did have her hand up and it is the job of the chair umpire to watch both server and receiver through each and every point in a tennis match. I believe that when a server serves and his/her opponent holds his/her hand up (not ready to receive serve), the server usually notices and restarts the serve; however, when the server serves, despite knowing, the chair umpire tells the server to restart the serve.

@sunfunmancanfan as u might have noticed this point is HORRIBLY overhyped by the media by now! And honestly it wouldnt affect the outcome of this match at all, Serena had her chance she blew it end of story. As for that server; trying to cheat your way out of a second serve is kinda lame and NO THE UMPIRE DIDNT ASK JUSTINE, he merely asked something but didnt really give the whole situation much thought! OFc ppl blame justine for cheeting even though the umpire didnt take his responsability!

@Leomerya12 One minor fact notice how she already 'preparated' her service by the swing of her right arm and the typical straight landing of her left foot(compared it too other hughe serves of Serena), I don't see any sign of hesitation,wanted to play it inside out (which nearly worked btw!) just a bad serve :P

Plus if Serena really did have a prob with all dis she shud've sorted it out then 'n der. she cud've had a chat with d Ref or Henin herself. U ask for a first serve when u see the ball hit the net, I noticed in slowmotion that Henin raised her hand DURING THE END OF THE FKING TOSS. SO there is NOOOOOOOOO WAAAAY in hell serena could have noticed that, even if u are the sharpest bulb on the christmas tree! She just wanted a first serve off

@justuser82 clearly u havent seen the match entirely? 1. PPl were booing NONSTOP during the match against Serena, some moments were even WORSE then the hand incident! 2.Look at the hand incident very closely and see for yourself;f ace for Williams, did you think she will play again the ball ! Surely not ! She lost cuz the entire french crowd was against here since the start not only cuz of this point it was an accumulation of events!

I have seen some of her matches where the crowd was even worse and yet she managed to crawl through but here she lost cuz she couldnt handle the stress end of story

@kimskis When someone puts their hand up during your serve it means that they are not ready to return the serve. The debate is about whether or not Serena saw Justine's hand. If she did, it can be argued that she missed her serve due to being thrown off by Justine's gesture. In such an instance, she would be entitled to make another first serve, as "the hand" would have acted as a hindrance. Prior to the hand incident, Serena was up 4-2 in the final set. She would up losing the set.

@kimskis The controversy arose when Henin clearly lied about it to the umpire. She's Belgian, so obviously the crowd got behind her despite being in the wrong, and Serena had to suffer for it.

@kimskis it's not an accident it's an incident. different. when a player puts their hand up while the other player is serving is because the player is not ready to play the point. so serena would have the first serve again, even if it was an ace she would have to serve it again. henin was the bitch here. she put her hand up but the umpire didn't see so she said she never did that but I bet that if serena had aced she would go running to the umpire saying she had her hand up!

@kimskis In tennis, it IS actually very important. Raising your hand when you're receiving indicates you're not ready to receive serve. I personally hate Serena and am naturally predispositioned against her, but it is entirely possible that she was distracted by Justine's hand, thinking she wasn't ready to receive, and that's why her serve went into the net. Justine did cheat, passively, by not admitting that her hand had been raised. This would have given Serena two serves.

@kimskis It's the fact that Justine said she didn't raise her hand (or admit that she did when Serena questioned the chair umpire). From that point on, Serena couldn't concentrate and thus lost the match. It definitely switched the momentum of their Semifinal, and thus is a major controversy...
