We are slave workers for the oil cartels, among others. Can you imagine how much time, and money you're spending just to fill up a gas tank? And lets not stop there. I'm sure there's environmentally friendly chemicals and plastics that don't need oil, but the oil carters have collected and locked those patents somewhere, in conjuction with the governments. That alone, makes us slaves.
Patents have expiration dates. They are also public records. No entity can "hide" a patent from the world, especially once it has expired. Copies are at the patent office. Think, people. Think.

The USA is addicted to "cheap" oil more than to just oil itself. Our current technology would allow us to use hydrogen, solar, ethanol, bio-fuels, Nuclear and more. Until the price of Oil goes up we won't convert to a more costly alternative. When Gas is $25 a gallon people will happily convert to an alternative like Hydrogen even if it is $19 a gallon. Currently you'd be a fool to try and convert to a fuel that cost the equivalent of $10 a gallon when gas is "only" $4 a gallon. Econ 101...
