I love the Kitty too, but the maintenance man-hours for the 'Cat when I was in the navy (85-89) were more than double what they were when the F14 was introduced in '74. I'm not sure what the maintenance man-hours were at retirement in '06, but I do know it was astronomically expensive, according to one of the aviation mags I read. I REALLY hated to see the Tomcat go, but it was well past it's prime, unfortunately. The part I can't abide is the whole "cut 'em up for scrap" plan. :(
I believe this is on the USS Nimitz in 1985 or 86; the wire broke inside the AG engine belowdecks, at the end of the recovery rollout. The pilots ejected because they thought the plane was going over the side. It was Arresting Gear engine #2; I ran this engine (after the incident) for two years. This is the first time I've seen a video of this accident.
It's obvious here that they had caught the wire as they were slowing down to a stop until the wire broke. Hope nobody was hurt bad on the deck either. Those cables will cut your legs right out from under you. I would always watch planes catching the wire when I was in the area.
i used to stand behine the front main mounts on our birds or the nose landing gear so that wire would hit that before me. and i also would watch the wire and the landings
@babyherc1r I did the same thing. I ALWAYS put something very beefy like a hummer or a main mount between me and that wire. That was back in the 80's. In all the video I'm seing now, there seems to be a lot of relaxing of safety on the flight deck.
@gtc1961 I saw the same things in videos of current Air Force flight ops compared to the early '80s. Not a scientific sampling but not good to see. And to tell you the truth, some things safety related were quite lax in the early '80s. But now even more so. One video showed aircraft in-flight refueling and nobody is wearing their helmet, mask or blast shield. Back then it would have been a good way to get grounded.
I wouldn't call this a crash. It looks like the arresting wire snapped and they ejected, most likely as ordered

Ouch, one landed on the deck and the other one went into the water. Guess the wire broke...

I think one landed on the deck and broke a couple of ribs and the other landed in a net on the side of the carrier and twisted his ankle.

oops, maybe they didn't need to punch out since the plane didn't roll off the deck.
dougapepper 4 years ago
Well I think they had to make that decision BEFORE the plane might have rolled off the deck.
