In the US, (specifically in Florida), watch out for South 49 Contracting Ltd. Also, watch out for J & E V/Mey Ventures Inc. A mix of the same people are involved in these companies...particularly Jerry Vandermey. He has a history of crime related to constuction. He generally lives in the Lower Mainland of BC, but Florida seems to be his other working area.
Their technique is to work for the General Contractor as superintendent / project manager and use their own company as a middleman to siphon profit out by overcharging for subcontractor work. Jerry Vandermey has been involved in similar schemes in the past. Just Google "Jerry Vandermey mareva injunction". He was having his house siezed because he was ripping off a strata in BC for what was likely leaky condo work.
A company to beware of.....they operate under the name Urban Contracting....or Urban Concepts General Contracting Ltd. The people involved are Jerry Vandermey, Laszlo (Les) Koppany, and Remo Schulz. They ripped off several sub-contractors at a BC Housing project in Newton (Surrey, BC).......and also ripped off the General Contractor for several hundred thousand dollars.
What amazes me about these guys is that there are no other complaints about them that I've discovered. Are people just getting bilked on the stupidity of how they run their business???
I agree...a contractor should NEVER be asking for money up front. If you own your property, they always have collateral to get paid if push comes to shove. A contractor can bill upon completion of agreed-upon phases. You are ALWAYS setting yourself up for ripoff by providing ANY money up front...whether for material OR labour. You should NOT be charged for meetings. This is the contractor's investment in the job. If the contractor can't finance your job properly, DO NOT HIRE THEM!!!
You got lucky. Someone got my mom for $25,000 and we had to higher lawyers. They also put riders in the contracts to try and steal the houses once there done. But its a pain in the ass. Were currently getting burned on a chimney.
