i don't know much about music except i love anything about it, hearing and learning. But i regard myself knowing more or less about people. Barenboim is a genius, no doubt. his comments are simple and to the point, and his instructions are also clear and easy to follow. i can tell the instant improvements even im not pro-trained. on the other hand, another real life example of "fame does not reflect the truth".

Barenboim is doing more than giving instruction. He's passing on western classical tradition. Every player is free to play as they feel. But there is also a tradition of why these notes were put together as they are. This is a wonderful treasure.

Beethoven was a simple man. Lang lang makes things too graceful and difficult! Thoose ooohh ahh orgasmic faces in times of tension, pain, and anger. Just does not work!! Props to Barenboim on this amazing session. Thank you. :)

Seeing this masterclass has really made me like Lang Lang a lot more, not just as a pianist, but as a person. Barenboim brings out the best of him.

This strikes me as what a masterclass should be. There is room for varying opinions on Lang, but he possess great talent, fluency, and feel. He is very young here, only 22. Barenboim has an advanced understanding of the nuances of the music. I think he recognizes and appreciates Lang's skill and potential and takes for granted his abilities. With that in mind, he feels free to bring out subtle points that Lang might not yet know, and he also expresses his interpretive preferences.

To conclude, some commentators expressed their criticisms of Lang, but I view this video as illustrating what can happen when a superior musican-in-the-making, who is open to learning, comes together with a master musician who is determined to share his knowledge.

Agree that Lang Lang is "all ears" at this session. Regardless of what you think of his playing, he is ingesting all the wisdom that Barenboim puts out.

And remember, the BETTER the student, the MORE a great teacher will have to say.

Lang Lang really seems to be listening to Barenboim comments, and attempting to grasp his instructions. It was a joy watching them both. Excellent!

I liked very much Lang Lang´s attitude... He really enjoyed every comment Baremboim made, and tried to take advantage of them. That didn´t seem to happen with the other two pianists. It is very pleasant to watch him smiling when he saw the result of listening to the Maestro´s advise.
