Most people, like 99% of the population, are simple minded, and will give themselves headaches trying to determine specific idiosyncrisies (sp?) between bands that fall in a similar genre. That's why we hear people try to compare a band like this to another band, So they don't have to think too hard. And btw, Korn and Limp Bizkit *DO* sound the alike; CRAP!
A frog and a toad... the toad is slightly similar to the frog, in terms of colouration and anatomy, but it's a completely different object, yet the frog gets all the respect.
To be honest, The Red Album is much better musically than the Blue Album. Yes, I like them both but The Red Album is among my favorite albums. Cannot wait to hear their new album come out whether it's the "Green Album" or "Pink Album" Baroness FTW

I used to like Baroness but they over-hyped themselves with the Blue Album. They let all the eBay scalpers jack prices on their vinyl, so guess what, nobody listens. Epic mega-fail . Baroness tried to follow Mastodon, Converge, Coalesce but the things that made those bands vinyl sell for such high prices, doesn't matter because the Blue Album sounds like a watered down version of The Mars Volta. Metal sucks anyway.

Do you guys not understand it's not something to bitch about when two bands sound alike? That means obviously people find a similarity between only two bands when in today's world you can find a similarity with 20 different "pop singers" or other bands that sound the same about 80 percent of the time? Another new type of metal is Djent. Things happen over a span of a decade. Better music is actually being made now. Now stfu.
@jmann114 Only thing about Djent is that it's basically a direct copy of a style that Meshuggah has been doing for ages now, someone came took that style and gave it a new name.
Understood, but what you have to see is that it's not like they did it to intentionally slander Meshuggah. There simply wasn't a classification for it back in the 90's/early 00's, but now that that style is picking up, other bands are taking it and turning it in a new direction and adding other elements into the mix. Now that there are enough bands that have a somewhat similar sound, there is now a classification for it. Same thing happened with Mastodon and Baroness.
[continued...] another good example is Gothenburg metal. Before that term was coined there were bands around that had similar elements, but a classification wasn't considered until other bands started taking it and putting it in a new direction.
I will give you this, they have similarities to Mastodon for sure. However, I think they have their own flavor amongst their sound. They aren't a rip-off, but they do have similar riffs, melodies, but I think Baroness delves out of the box as far as their songwriting. Aside from a couple of riffs, the Blue album is more of the direction they should keep going because they incorporating more influences.

they're different bands. gahdamn. they play in the same genre, which happens to be popular in georgia, which is where they're from. i used to like mastodon more, but i've swung waaaaaay over to baroness in the last few months - which isn't to say they don't both kick ass in their own ways.

Got their Blue record. Was blown away. I love original and creative bands that have their own unique sound as opposed to just sounding the same as everyone else. It was Paul Masvidal Of Cynic that said Unless your a cover band you should never sound the same as anyone else.

the only thing that i can see is akin with baroness and mastodon is the singing, but most bands in the sludge genre sound pretty similar. Mastodon really didn't get good until blood mountain anyways. leviathan is pretty simple, this song showcases baroness's complexity quite well

the drummer of mastodon beats any drummer of this generation
they have better concept albums and song structure
better combinations of heavy riffs and melodic parts
more diverse vocals

@MorbidHumanity666 so damn true. I've seen Mastodon 4 times since they released Crack the skye and although they've gotten better at playing that record, the last time I saw them they played with Baroness and they didn't miss a damn note once. Truely strong musicians.

I don't understand why they didn't make a video for the first track off the Red Album, "Rays On Pinion". This song is awesome, yes, but a Rays On Pinion vid would've gotten Baroness to the mainstream.

they're different bands. gahdamn. they play in the same genre, which happens to be popular in georgia, which is where they're from. i used to like mastodon more, but i've swung waaaaaay over to baroness in the last few months - which isn't to say they don't both kick ass in their own ways.

Got their Blue record. Was blown away. I love original and creative bands that have their own unique sound as opposed to just sounding the same as everyone else. It was Paul Masvidal Of Cynic that said Unless your a cover band you should never sound the same as anyone else.

@HadBrunt99 not really, the riffing is way more complex with baroness, at least with leviathan. instead of mastodon using their trademark tuning their guitar in a weird way to evoke "proginess",
the only thing that i can see is akin with baroness and mastodon is the singing, but most bands in the sludge genre sound pretty similar. Mastodon really didn't get good until blood mountain anyways. leviathan is pretty simple, this song showcases baroness's complexity quite well
