@BroStoner Not quite true - because marijuana impairs judgment and motor coordination and slows reaction time, someone driving high has a greater likelihood of being responsible for an auto accident. In fact, a recent survey found that 6.8 percent of drivers who were involved in accidents tested positive for THC. Marijuana is the most common illegal drug found in drivers who die in accidents (14 percent), sometimes in combination with alcohol or other drugs.
Weed doesn't make me mess up in school. When I'm sober at school I get an F on almost every assignment I'm given. When I'm blazed at school I pass everything with flying colors :D
All of these things like you may make mistakes blahblahblah. Those are all things in nonsmoking teenagers as well. Also about the driving though it does slightly impare driving unlike alcohol a stoned driver will drive slower and more cautiously. The amount of chemicals in the brain is a bad fact to put in there the number of chemicals does not coorelate with the toxicity. Rat poision- 30 chemicals coffee- 600.
@brwneydgirl70 A stoned driver will drive slower and more “cautiously” to try to compensate for the affects of marijuana - slowed reaction time, difficulty judging distances, etc. Unfortunately, the rest of the world does not slow down, too. On your other point – you are correct that the amount of chemicals in a substance does not correlate directly with toxicity. It’s more about not yet knowing what all the other chemicals even are or what they do.
@NIDANIH Sure, but we already DO know how these chemicals affect the brain. Various studies have been conducted relating to cancer rates and marijuana usage, with the majority displaying no relation between lung cancer and smoked marijuana. Of the chemicals in roasted coffee, 16/28 chemicals studied were found to be carcinogenic in rats. And unlike what brwneydgirl70 had claimed, there are actually over 1000 found chemicals in coffee. MJ Prohibitionists use the 400 number as a scare tactic.
and how does it feel to be bought out by the goverment ? yeah there funding ur research but are basically paying you to keep ur mouth shut. look at hundreads of universities around the us . all independent studdies by them show that marajuanna infact dosent decrese braincell groath or that it even kills brain cells at all . look at any non goverment funded experements and the results are almost the same threw universities . stop listen to the goverment studdies or the bbc there all leing scumbag
@greenfiend42000 FYI, NIDA supports over 85% of the world’s research on the health aspects of drug abuse and addiction, most of which is done through universities.
@NIDANIH and ur point ? look at denmark, poland , amsterdam, germany and the uk . all there studies show marajuanna dosent increse ur risk of physcosis later in life . infact lung cancer, physcosis and many side effects the goverment said were the result of marajuanna is false. why dident physcosis and lung cancer rates rise in the 1960's and 70's ? tell me why because im pretty sure anyone in the u.s can associate those years is marajuanna abuse . its just the goverment's war on drugs.all lies
@NIDANIH no maybe you need to realize the facts. marijuana is in no way addictive in fact a study done by UCLA showed that marijuana might even have protective effects on the lungs. Please search medline and you will see this, but of course you will see much research with a negative outcome towards marijuana...kind of reminds me of when they listed being gay as a disease in the 70's just backward thinking in a society that has an interest in keeping marijuana illegal...fact.
@Leva1234 Of course not everyone becomes addicted to marijuana, but some people do. And while scientists have confirmed that the cannabis plant contains active ingredients with therapeutic potential for relieving pain, controlling nausea, stimulating appetite, and decreasing ocular pressure, additional studies are needed to follow-up on the findings from the UCLA study that you mention.
@Leva1234 Marijuana itself is an unlikely medication candidate because the unpurified plant contains numerous chemicals with unknown health effects. The research continues. FDA-approved medications containing some of marijuana’s active ingredients are currently available, and scientists are actively engaged in the pursuit of a new generation of safe and effective medications.
"It's really hard to know"? That statement is very discrediting. Why don't you show me a video that interviews people whose lives are in danger because of marijuana, then I'll believe you. But as far as I know, marijuana is as bad to your health as hamburgers can be and just as addictive.
Marijuana only causes physical addiction, like jogging for example. ALL of the effects they listed on this video are short term and can be avoided by using it in a safe environment, and who cares how many chemicals it contains if they can't affect you in a bad way. That part where they show different names is just a stupid way to fill the leftover time because they can't think of any other bad things about it...
@irozimaXx it can cause psychological not physical addiction physical addiction means you go through withdrawals (like shaking) if you stop psychological means you just want to do it cause its fun (like watching TV) and most of the other stuff not only can be avoided by being in a safe environment but just plain isn't true
@odstcheif Although symptoms can definitely differ in severity, long-term marijuana abusers trying to quit report withdrawal symptoms including: irritability, sleeplessness, decreased appetite, anxiety, and drug craving, all of which can make it difficult to remain abstinent. These symptoms begin within about 1 day following abstinence, peak at 2-3 days, and subside within 1 or 2 weeks following drug cessation. See nida.nih.gov/DrugPages/Marijuana.html for more information.
@TheCityLightz - Of course, everyone makes mistakes. Mistakes are what makes us human and are an important part of learning. However, marijuana can alter your judgment and reduce your inhibitions. This means you might make mistakes that you wouldn’t have made if you weren’t high. And, since marijuana also affects attention and memory, you might not even learn from these mistakes!
@NIDANIH Clarification: The dependance rate for marijuana and the withdrawl symptoms are the same as caffiene. For further information on this see your website. As for long term memory effects, it only occurs in SOME long term users with "long term user" defined as someone who smoke regularly for 23.9 years and the negative effects go away once the use of marijuana is stopped. For more information see the March 2002 issue of the Journal of the AMA and the April 2002 issue of the Canadian Medica
@mustsleepmore Scientific research builds upon itself. No single research study is definitive, as it is necessarily constricted to specific parameters (study population, research design, etc.). You correctly identify the parameters for long-term marijuana use (23.9 years) in the 2002 JAMA article you reference and the conclusions about people who discontinue their use.
@mustsleepmore Another conclusion of the article is that “long-term heavy cannabis users show impairments in memory and attention that endure beyond the period of intoxication and worsen with increasing years of regular cannabis use.”
@mustsleepmore Perhaps the most important point, as you also allude to (i.e., effects only in “SOME users”), is that the effects one experiences depend on factors related to both the drug (quality, amount, length of use) and the individual (genetics, physiology, environment).
When you're high, you don't feel like driving around, or going to school. You want to sit at home, watch tv, think, and eat. It does NOT cause violent actions like liquor. It does NOT have any single physically addictive chemicals or compounds like nicotine found in tobacco. It does NOT result in serious hospital visits, mostly just people that are high by eating brownies on accident, and this effect doesn't last very long. It is MUCH safer than some other legal drugs. It HAS medical properties.
@FerminINC While derived from a plant, marijuana contains more than 400 chemical constituents, with Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) being the main psychoactive ingredient. THC binds to receptors in brain areas that influence pleasure, memory, thought, concentration, sensory and time perception, appetite, pain, and movement coordination.
@NIDANIH The whole "400 chemical constituent" scare tactic is such garbage. Sure it has 400 chemicals, but coffee has many more. THC can make CB1 receptors in the brain send different messages, including ones to KILL CANCER CELLS! That should be excuse enough to make it a legal medication!
@FerminINC While a few preclinical (non-human) studies have shown promise with THC in some types of cancer, the amount of THC used was generally much greater than that obtained through normal marijuana use—and it was targeted directly to the cancer cells. In addition, some other studies (mostly epidemiological) have shown a possible link between marijuana use and increased rates of various cancers. Studies on both sides are too preliminary to draw any conclusions at this time.
@FerminINC Whatever you chose to do, make sure you inform your doctor. Drug interactions can be very dangerous and unpredictable. The fact that it is “natural” does not reduce the risk - even the humble grapefruit can cause dangerous interactions with several medications!
@FerminINC This is why marijuana can have wide ranging effects, including altered judgment and decision making (like not going to school and staying on the couch eating junk food), impaired short-term memory, increased heart rate, and, yes, even addiction.
@urfriendlyhometownDD Not sure what you mean by “lie to the children.” There is significant evidence to indicate that marijuana use lowers one’s inhibitions and leads to unsafe choices, including risky sexual behavior. Numerous other studies support the other assertions in the video. Please check out NIDA’s website for more information.
its not hard to know? there has been a lot of studies saying that its ok. and you can get addicted to hamburgers, should we outlaw those? this video in not convincing at all.
This video has no proof of bodily harm from it either, no one has ever been hurt just from using marijuana, its far, far less harmful than cigarettes, alcohol, drugs (I say drugs because marijuana is a plant) or any other tabacco products. Its funny because up until around the 1930's it was legal, when George Washington was president, it was a law, that if you owned a plantation, or large area of land, you were to grow it with the rest of your crops.
Incorrect. it is IMPOSSIBLE to be physically addicted to cannabis. it simply does not have addictive properties to it. when you stop smoking it you DO NOT go through physical withdrawl.
@OgrAdaY Correction: Marijuana does not create brain cells, and evidence suggests it can actually impair short-term memory, making it hard to learn and retain information.
@OgrAdaY Oh, man, it does. When you smoke like 4 times per day for 10 years long. You can't eat, sleep or think without it I even don't speak about tolerance)) Smoke it once a week and you will have fun, will be very creative feel higher than anyone...Anything can be unhealthy, just know the measure. Weed awesome. Peace ;)
@mario0oiram thanks for sharing your personal experiences; however, worth remembering everyone reacts differently to a drug that affects your brain, even marijuana. Many people have real negative responses to it, including paranoia and anxiety.
@OgrAdaY Actually, long-term marijuana use can lead to addiction. Along with craving, withdrawal symptoms such as irritability, sleeping problems, and anxiety can make it difficult for long-term marijuana smokers to quit.
@DSEJT While you may feel like marijuana relaxes you, several research studies have shown that it actually disrupts the sleep cycle, including the important rapid eye movement (REM) sleep stage.
If an individual doesn't want to use marijuana, they won't. And they won't get addicted. I smoke occasionally and I find that I never feel the need for it but I tend to be a lot smarter when i smoke it . And besides, it makes things more fun. But honestly, I'm a straight A student and most of the "stoners" at my school (my friends) are some of the smartest people I know and they aren't addicted at all. They just enjoy the calm feeling they get when they smoke,
wow. this had better be a joke. anyone whos ever smoked weed ever in history knows that your mind is completely fine. it doesn't change the way you think at all, all it does is change the way your body feels.
@applelemonhead3345 I'm a big pot head and I can tell you that your statement isn't true. There are definitely some psychological alterations that take place too.
@asmemeas - Addiction depends on multiple factors related to both the substance and the individual. Genetics, environment, and physiology all play a factor – as does the type, quality, and quantity of the drug(s) or other substances. It’s not a simple equation. This uncertainty is what makes addiction so insidious.
If you honestly think no one has died using just mariuana you are either misinformed or lying to yourself. it is 20 times as carsinogenic as tobacco.Research with the US army in Europe in the 1970's found that link. .I was a Jazz musician for years and the guys who were on dope are either now dead or useless. Now what it is hydroponically grown it is even more dangerous. Go to any hospital and you will discover the age for heart attack, respiritory disease and lung cancer is falling every year.
@andersoulful If you smoke weed ever, you will die! I guarantee that you will die because my friend who read this book about this guy who died from weed told me so! Everyone who smokes weed is a criminal and EVIL! How can marijuana even be used as a medicine if it causes all the bad side effects like "lack of motivation"??? Those cancer patients need that motivation to live! If they take marijuana they are signing their own death certificate, and if they don't die then they will go crazy then!
@andersoulful Why would medical weed be useful if we have those big drug companies giving us those magic pills that cure everything! I know weed is the most DANGEROUS drug because I watched the magic television that told me so! But I know that drinking beer is safe, because why else would they advertise it on NATIONAL TELEVISION right??? I mean cmon if the media tells me its ok then I know for sure that its good to do! Wake everyone up and let them now that marijuana will DESTROY THEM
@solokeith5000 Reminder: NIDA does not set policy, we support and report on research. So, yes, please think for yourself, but do it knowing the evidence.
(continued again) carcinogens from joints and pipes and other things will be harmful to your health, yes, but not in the way that everyone thinks...
It's been proven that marijuana only smokers cannot get cancer from marijuana.
The reason it's illegal in the first place is because the cotton farmers lobbied against the hemp farmers (Please note that hemp is COMPLETELY different from marijuana (you cant even get high from it..)) in order to keep on making money because hemp was much more useful.
(continued, sorry ran out of room)rehab clinics for marijuana are there because they chose to go to rehab when they got caught as opposed to spending time in jail.
I'm not trying to tell people to smoke weed, or encouraging it -- It is still illegal, and if you get caught with it, you will be prosecuted by the law regardless of what you think about it.
I just wish people would stop getting brainwashed by the government and other people who keep saying it is bad for you.
Im 19, I smoke pot every day. Im just about to start my second year at University. I play on the school baseball team, and have decent grades. It does not control my life, and it's not addicting, in itself. the habit can be addicting, or the feeling, but not marijuana itself. It has no chemicals in it that make it addicting, unlike things like nicotine in cigarettes.
The fact of the matter is that marijuana is safer than cigarettes, and anyone who disagrees hasn't done the research.
@bj0215 You draw a distinction between marijuana itself as being addicting versus the habit or feeling as being addicting. How do you tell the difference? You mention that marijuana does not control your life, but you also mention that you smoke pot every day – what would happen if you went a few days, or even a few weeks without smoking? With regard to cigarettes, agreed, they are highly addictive and kill an estimated 440,000 people in this country each year.
@NIDANIH I have gone weeks, months, etc., without smoking, and I personally feel no negative effects from stopping. I don't have the craving of like, "I need to smoke" that a person who smokes cigarettes needs. Granted, not everyone is like this. The major distinction is that nicotine in cigarettes and other things is a known addictive substance. In pot, there really isn't anything like that. It all comes down to willpower, and the person themselves. Most of the people who are in rehab clinics -
@NIDANIH Any experienced smoker knows what the withdrawal effects will be. They are NOT however, significantly dangerous like the withdrawals of hard drugs such as heroin, cocaine or even alcohol. The user will experience the likes of insomnia, irritability and lack of appetite and for a maximum of a couple weeks. Also, it'll take weeks for the heaviest of smokers, not the casual ones. After that, everything will be back to normal.
ps: English is not my 1st language, sorry for the mistakes.
@NIDANIH so you have the facts about cigarettes killing people, but where are your facts about weed killing people? None. You just feed lies in this video cause i know kids in my school who are stoned everyday and they are straight A students. You people try to make weed sound like it's heroin.... this video is false and stupid.
@NIDANIH The Difference Between addiction and using it everyday is bj0215 is doing fine in COLLEGE and I'm guessing has no problems with other drugs. I, Like bj0215 am also in college and i am 21. i started smoking at 19. I have suffered from Anxiety and Panic Disorder for almost 10 years now, and the only effective medicine that combats my panic attacks is Cannabis. I smoke everyday and have been for the passed year, and in that time have managed to complete a number of courses with A's.
@thebingoman6 - Drugs can be sneaky. While you may think you are using “in moderation” there is often a creep-up to a kind of “takeover” – just like you are describing. While we know some factors that affect an individual’s response to drug use – genes, drug potency, previous experience, etc. – the way drugs will affect each person is unpredictable.
@thebingoman6 (cont.) - You mention that weed almost controls your life. It doesn’t have to. Please talk to a friend or trusted adult and consider getting treatment. SAMHSA.gov has locations of treatment centers near you. Thank you for your honest and sincere comment.
@NIDANIH I think the point that knight5659 was trying to make and you seem to be helping him, is that the scientific side of our government, you, have admitted to the potential medical benefits of Cannabis and the bureaucracy, DEA, have repeatedly refused to lesson the Schedule for Cannabis. I will even go so far as to show you the duplicity our government operates in pertaining to Cannabis.
furthermore i cant believe a "scientist" with a "PhD" proclaims marijuana is addictive, which is not true. and yes its hard to know because you dont have the slightest idea what it means to use it. marijuana is the contemporary equivalent of a glass of wine on your couch after a busy day at work. you cant stop us, we wont quit, its worth it and it doesnt harm a single person
@divinedido - Just as with alcohol, everyone reacts to drugs differently – some people who have a glass of wine after a busy day find that they NEED that glass – and then it escalates to more than a glass. Same is true with marijuana. While not everyone becomes addicted immediately, some do. And yes, marijuana has harmed people – in fact, marijuana is the most commonly identified illicit drug in fatal accidents (~14% of drivers)!
@NIDANIH I find it hard to believe marijuana cause more accidents than drunk driving. Besides it has been proven time and time again that marijuana DOES NOT cause physical dependency, only addiction to it's effect. And addiction is the key word, because it does not cause symptomps of withdrawal, compared to other drugs like heroin, cocaine and event over the counter "safe and legal" drugs like OxyContin and Vicodin. We are in a time where the OTC drugs are stronger than anything on the streets
@divinedido - Thank you for your thoughtful remarks. You are correct in noting that drunk driving is a major cause of accidents. In our response, we were only noting the fact that 14% of drivers in fatal accidents tested positive for marijuana, which doesn’t preclude their having alcohol and/or other drugs in their system as well.
@divinedido (cont.) - On your second point, individuals who find themselves addicted to anything can experience actual physical withdrawal symptoms, though different substances cause different symptoms, some more severe than others. With marijuana, these symptoms are similar in type and severity to those of nicotine withdrawal—irritability, sleeping difficulties, anxiety, and craving—which often prompt relapse.
@divinedido (cont.) - Withdrawal symptoms peak a few days after use has stopped and dissipate within about 2 weeks. And while these symptoms do not pose an immediate threat to the health of the user, they can make it hard for someone to remain abstinent. Finally, good point about prescription drug abuse, a very real and serious problem, which NIDA is addressing on multiple fronts.
when im high im more attentive when im high,im more calm and end up finishing my homework early and end up with above average grades, you could ask my teachers, they always tell me im one of the brightest students they have.weed is good,it makes me feel good, and im gonna keep smoking it.
@bigboydubstep - Congratulations on doing so well in school! You sound like a bright student. I’m glad that you have not yet had negative experiences with marijuana. But a good thing to remember is that people respond differently to marijuana -- and even people who smoke it regularly can have different reactions at different times of their lives. Something to think about. P.S. Have you ever wondered how well you would do in school if you weren’t high?
@NIDANIH the only thing about weed thats bad for you is the trouble it can get you in. so the gov't invented the only flaw in pot. its less dangerous than eating at mcdonalds
it is a common misconseption that high school kids smoke weed because they want to look "cool". Most of the people that i know that smoke do it because it make life more fun! Every argument against marijuana has been shot down, such as, "Marijuana is a gateway drug, if you smoke weed it will lead to heroin"....FALSE, look at it this way, Mostly every motorcycle rider started out riding a bicycle, right? but not all bicylce riders go on to riding a motorcycle.
Dont focus on Cannabis, it is not a problem and it has never been a problem, it´s a harmless herb, i dont care if you think it´s a "Dangerous drug", how can it be that when there are absolutely not one single documented death from an overdose. and BTW your statements are false, lies lies and lies!.
Maybe put your focus on "drugs" including Cigarettes and Alcohol those are the ones killing people.
@Xrazor4Games93 - As a public health institute at the National Institutes of Health, NIDA is focused on presenting research-backed information, with the goal of informing and educating the public about all drugs of abuse—and that includes tobacco and alcohol, which, as you correctly state, kill people in large numbers.
@NIDANIH Yeah it's just that alcohol and tobacco are illegal while the government wages a futile War on Marijuana when it is safer than both alcohol and tobacco, in terms of addiction rate and the damage it does to one's body. Police arrest otherwise non-violent people for marijuana possession. Drug cartels from Mexico make over half their money on marijuana, something that wouldn't occur if it were legal. If you truly based policy on "research-backed information," then marijuana would be legal
I will first say this im not trying to hate or bash you.
I also do not smoke.
BUT,
It says marijuana is addictive, This is a lie (medically) it is not considered addictive
Psychologically sure, but it wouldn'y be so addictive if people didn't say its addictive. It puts a preset where you think your gonna get helplessly addicted that it can cause negative physical effects which it doesnt. Cannabis Oil even fights cancerous cells. Too bad it's illegal. Reply or send me a pm please
@knight5659 - You raise an interesting question – is there a distinction between medical and psychological addiction? The mind and the brain are not so easily separated from one another. Addiction happens as a result of brain changes (physical) from repeated drug use, which causes people to have difficulty controlling their drug use even though it interferes with many aspects of their lives (behavioral).
@knight5659 - This isn’t true for everyone who uses marijuana, but it is true for about 11% of people who use marijuana. And when they stop, they may suffer from withdrawal symptoms similar to those for nicotine withdrawal.
@NIDANIH I'll give you that but if all these people were informed that they are linked from mental addiction( Changing the way you think to making you feel differently and wanting it more and more) If they knew that it doesn't happen ~90% of the time then would it be outrageous to assume that it might put them in a better mindset. Based on my assumption that some if not most of the 11% of people were tricked into the addiction symptoms from misinformation. (Placebo effect)
@knight5659 - And while THC—the active ingredient in marijuana—may have medicinal properties, the research is really in too early of a stage to say it fights cancer cells. That said, there are FDA-approved marijuana-based medications to treat chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting that cannot be controlled by other antiemetic agents.
@NIDANIH I cannot remember everything accurately but on WebMD when I was researching cancer it said the THC sends instructions to the cancerous cells making them literally eat themselves. And, the reason the tests are in too early of a stage is because whenever someone tried these tests in the past the results were shunned and the government made it hard to get the marijuana for testing.
And, some people don't want to depend on pharmaceutical companies for everything
@knight5659 - You are correct that there are studies looking at various components of marijuana (e.g., THC) for their potential medicinal properties. In fact, NIDA research to understand how marijuana works in the brain and body led to the discovery of the endocannabinoid system, which is targeted by THC and might be harnessed for medical benefits.
@NIDANIH Here is the number for the patent owned by the U.S. Government extolling the potential neuro protecting properties of Cannabinoids. U.S. Patent Number: 6,630,507. Google it!
@knight5659 - Oral cannabinoid medications avoid the adverse effects of smoked marijuana and could help such medical conditions/symptoms as pain, nausea, obesity, wasting disease, addiction, autoimmune disorders, etc.
@NIDANIH I wasn't doubting that it worked I'm just saying i'm not 100% sure the pills wont have an adverse affect on me. But when I used to smoke (over a year a joint or two mostly every night) I had no negative side effects, except cotton-mouth. Also, I had absolutely no problem quitting, I did plan on smoking again but I also want a job and to join the military someday. So even though I have money and can I just don't really want too.
You notice all the government sites such as that, Wikipedia, Above the Influence, DARE all have the same definition. I remember them talking about how supposedly sometime in my life I was going to be peer-pressured into smoking a cigarette, and how people smoke cigarettes to fit in. Never found that too be true. I think it's a way for them to make it more appealing to kids.
The oppressed have become the oppressors. Shame on the American government. Imagine if our founding fathers were here to see the U.S. government arrest 800,000 innocent people each year. Whatever happened to land of the free? No, this is the land of the incarcerated, where our government lets big pharmaceutical and alcohol industries propagandize the public to believe that this plant, which in its natural form and ingested orally is one of the only things that CANNOT kill you, be an evil weed.
You cannot cite drug abuse data for Marijuana here in the US. When your busted with pot you have two options. Jail, or a treatment program. Whose going to choose jail; nobody. One you join the treatment program you are tagged as a "Addict"
First, regardless of how people enter treatment, 4.3 million Americans 12 and older abuse or are addicted to marijuana, according to the highly respected National Survey on Drug Use and Health (supported by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration [SAMHSA]), which uses clinical criteria from the venerable Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM-IV) to make that determination.
The DSM-IV is the “bible” of any professional who diagnoses mental health disorders, including drug abuse and addiction. Second, while many do enter treatment via the criminal justice system, many others do so voluntarily. According to the latest Treatment Episode Data Set, also put out by SAMHSA, of the approximate 322,000 marijuana treatment admissions in 2008, just over half (57%) were from a criminal justice/DUI referral.
@batistaker123: Yes, that is why we have guidelines (provided by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services), and, yes, we are required to follow them. For the benefit of commenters, we provide a link to those guidelines on our youtube site.
So how can you explain the fact that not a single marijuana only smoker has ever gotten cancer due to their smoking? How do you explain the fact that no one has ever died from smoking marijuana because their is no toxic amount of THC? (None thats possible to reach at least) while pain killers such as Advil and Alleve kill 7,500 people annually. As far as risky behavior, that has nothing to do with drugs. Kids will have sex and drive recklessly regardless if they do drugs not.
@MrRepelrepent : Actually, the jury is still out on the link between marijuana smoking and cancer. As far as prescription and over-the-counter medications, we have a lot of information, including other videos, on their associated risks—only we chose not to include that in a video about marijuana. And abusing drugs is risky behavior, which, counter your statement, does produce other risky behaviors—more than when drugs are not abused. The research is clear on that.
Wow, literally everything in this video is pure propaganda with no research to back it up, at least not presented. (it doesn't exist) I have been smoking for 5 years and never had problems in school and it doesn't even get you blasted like this video might try to convince you. You just get a kind of fuzzy feeling. But omg, lets still support the big tobacco companies and alcohol because they are safer right?
Smoking any kind of burning material is unhealthy. Most anyone knows this. However, just because smoking is unhealthy does not mean that cannabis is unhealthy. Cannabis can be ingested in a number of ways now. It can be vaporized, eaten, tinctures can be made with it. People who need cannabis for medicinal purposes don't have to smoke it to get the healthy relief they need.
As for that link whoever posted about cannabis addiction, you couldn't have chosen a worse link to prove your point.
@75pearl75, @elvenflow: Several comments of late suggest that our decisions for what research to support are guided by politics and that we refuse to support research on the potential benefits of marijuana. As we’ve said before on this site, NIDA and other NIH Institutes do support research on the positive health benefits stemming from marijuana’s active ingredients, including THC, and on the body’s endocannabinoid system where marijuana acts.
Support of this research recognizes potential benefits for treating pain, nausea, obesity, wasting disease, addiction, autoimmune disorders, etc. To be funded, studies must have scientific rigor—that is, they meet accepted standards of scientific design and, on the basis of peer review, public health significance, and Institute priorities, are competitive with other applications that qualify for funding.
@NIDANIH The "Abused or addicted" statistic is extremely misleading. I wonder how many of those were " cannabis abusers" and how many of those were " cannabis addicts". By definition ALMOST EVERY USER of marijuana is an abuser because they use it to get high. Also of the people in treatment how many of them are there because the court gave them the option of rehab or jail for a possession charge? I would bet a lot and since they are choose rehab over jail they are considered "addicts".
From the New York Times Article "Researchers Find Study of Medical Marijuana Discouraged"
“As the National Institute on Drug Abuse, our focus is primarily on the negative consequences of marijuana use,” said Shirley Simson, a spokeswoman for the drug abuse institute, known as NIDA. “We generally do not fund research focused on the potential beneficial medical effects of marijuana.”
And your agency has to approve all studies on cannabis? Fox guarding the henhouse, much?
Any research into postive benefits of cannabis is actively discouraged by the US government
From The New York Times article "Researchers Find Study of Medical Marijuana Discouraged"
"Marijuana is the only major drug for which the federal government controls the only legal research supply and for which the government requires a special scientific review"
How can you properly call youselves scientists, since your "research" is determined by politics, not the scientific method?
@elvenflow - Actually, NIDA’s research portfolio does include research on the positive health benefits stemming from marijuana’s active ingredient, THC, and on the body’s endocannabinoid system where marijuana acts. Among the conditions/symptoms that could be targeted are pain, nausea, obesity, wasting disease, addiction, autoimmune disorders, etc. Currently, there are two FDA-approved oral THC medications, however, smoked marijuana has not been FDA approved as a medicine.
@elvenflow - To your main point, NIH has and will support studies on both the adverse effects and therapeutic uses for marijuana, provided the research proposals have scientific rigor—that is, they meet accepted standards of scientific design and, on the basis of peer review, public health significance, and Institute priorities, are competitive with other applications that qualify for funding.
@elvenflow - The most promising research to date has been on cannabinoids—compounds that bind to the same receptor(s) as marijuana’s active ingredient, THC—rather than smoked marijuana itself. In that vein, NIDA does support a substantial research portfolio to elucidate the role of cannabinoids in normal brain and body physiology. Ultimately, this research may help uncover potential therapeutic compounds to treat addiction and pain, with low risk of abuse.
@NIDANIH So if I created a post with Carlan's list of dirty words, then you'd allow the comment?
The people posting on the forum for this video are, mostly, not you or the organization you represent. Therefore, I believe that your defense of comment screening is a straw man argument. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Also, have you guys seen any reports detailing the number of marijuana addicts? I have not been able to find any statistics.
@jesuriah In answer to your first question: No, we could not post profanity, because it violates our comment policy, a link to which accompanies every video description. So no straw man here. Here’s an excerpt from that policy that pertains to the question at hand: “Personal attacks, profanity, and aggressive behavior are prohibited. Instigating arguments in a disrespectful way is also prohibited.”
@jesuriah We seek to make this forum informative and to provide a way for interested people to interact with us in a respectful way. NIDA is a public health agency whose mission is to lead the way in supporting research on drug abuse and addiction and to disseminate those results to help stop the devastating consequences of addiction in this country. Which leads into your second question.
@jesuriah According to the annual National Survey on Drug Use and Health, a highly respected instrument for revealing drug use trends among those 12 and older in this country, more people were abused or were addicted to marijuana than any other drug—4.3 million in 2009.
@jesuriah Latest treatment data show that in 2008, approximately 15 percent of people entering drug abuse treatment programs reported marijuana as their primary drug of abuse; that rate goes up to 61 percent for people under 15 and 56 percent for those 15 to 19 years old.
@NIDANIH Many people found guilty of possession of cannabis are required to take some form of drug counseling/ treatment program, along with community service, and possibly drug screening. Being forced to take a drug abuse program because of what the law says in no way proves that those people are addicted to or believe they are addicted to cannabis.
@sanke0: It is true that people convicted of illicit drug use often participate in court-mandated treatment; it is also true that their outcomes can be as good as those who self-refer.
@NIDANIH Ooo great statistic. You know what happens. Kid gets caught and is told that they either get a terrible punishment or go to rehab. Of course they go to rehab. Statistics like that do not prove it is addicting.
These kids have no idea what addiction is. I was a heroin addict, I was addicted to Xanax. My bladder shut down after withdrawl from Xanax. I had a freaking seizure. When I was withdrawling from heroin in juvy, I was laying in a puddle of disgusting sweat and I couldn't stop throwing up anything I tried to eat or drink.
Where's the heroin and Xanax video? This marijuana video is a joke. Educate on the medicinal benefits of this medicine, as well as the harmless recreational use.
@NIDANIH you do realize that those numbers are skewed because many of those people seeking drug abuse treatment are doing so because its mandated by the court.
@NIDANIH what you are hiding in this statement is how many of these people entered drug abuse problems on their own? was it because of a court order or family pressure? also you choose to ignore facts that prescription drugs kill more than ALL the deaths of every illicit drugs
@Leva1234 - Although many people enter treatment for marijuana and other illegal drug use under a court mandate, they nonetheless have outcomes similar to those who enter voluntarily, which is interesting. Also, we do not ignore prescription drug abuse and agree it poses an urgent public health threat—just not covered here in a video on marijuana abuse.
You said it. Risky sexual behavior is already a problem without drugs as it is. Also, poor performance at school? I had that for many years while I was growing up and I wasn't even touching alcohol much right until near the end of high school. This is nothing but garbage propaganda that panders to the most ignorant of the subject at hand.
Mine is more about civil rights and education as well as delivering a safer medicine. I'm not the typical pothead who 'uses', actually, I just quit last month. I don't want to be dependent on it, but it seriously helped me by stimulating my appetite and making me think more about life in general. I don't think anyone should abuse marijuana, but not everyone does. Same thing goes for anything in life, whether it be food, stimulant, etc.
Obviously America wants cannabis legalized and studied more in depth without government restrictions getting in the way. You guys have been stalling for 40 years, does it really take that long to study a plant?
@sleepless4201 - Since you asked, NIDA is studying the effects of marijuana and THC in the brain and peripheral networks, for multiple reasons, including to better understand potential benefits for a variety of ailments. It’s more than studying a plant (which would be botany), it’s rather neuroscience.
@sleepless4201 - And we haven’t been “stalling,” we’ve been very busy—neuroscience is a dynamic and ever-evolving field, with new tools and technologies that continue to enhance our research capabilities and enlarge our understanding of multiple drugs, so we can better carry out our public health mission. Stand by…
@NIDANIH So how'd you guys manage to let all those health destroying pharmaceuticals get by? I don't see you studying the effects Oxycodone has on the brain/body. Or alcohol, or cigarettes, or just about any other drug on the market. So why cann
How many teenagers have died from smoking marijuana?....oh that's right, none.
BroStoner 1 week ago
@BroStoner Not quite true - because marijuana impairs judgment and motor coordination and slows reaction time, someone driving high has a greater likelihood of being responsible for an auto accident. In fact, a recent survey found that 6.8 percent of drivers who were involved in accidents tested positive for THC. Marijuana is the most common illegal drug found in drivers who die in accidents (14 percent), sometimes in combination with alcohol or other drugs.

Rat poision- 30 chemicals coffee- 600.
brwneydgirl70 1 month ago
@brwneydgirl70 A stoned driver will drive slower and more “cautiously” to try to compensate for the affects of marijuana - slowed reaction time, difficulty judging distances, etc. Unfortunately, the rest of the world does not slow down, too. On your other point – you are correct that the amount of chemicals in a substance does not correlate directly with toxicity. It’s more about not yet knowing what all the other chemicals even are or what they do.
NIDANIH 1 month ago
@NIDANIH Sure, but we already DO know how these chemicals affect the brain. Various studies have been conducted relating to cancer rates and marijuana usage, with the majority displaying no relation between lung cancer and smoked marijuana. Of the chemicals in roasted coffee, 16/28 chemicals studied were found to be carcinogenic in rats. And unlike what brwneydgirl70 had claimed, there are actually over 1000 found chemicals in coffee. MJ Prohibitionists use the 400 number as a scare tactic.

Please search medline and you will see this, but of course you will see much research with a negative outcome towards marijuana...kind of reminds me of when they listed being gay as a disease in the 70's just backward thinking in a society that has an interest in keeping marijuana illegal...fact.
Leva1234 1 month ago
@Leva1234 Of course not everyone becomes addicted to marijuana, but some people do. And while scientists have confirmed that the cannabis plant contains active ingredients with therapeutic potential for relieving pain, controlling nausea, stimulating appetite, and decreasing ocular pressure, additional studies are needed to follow-up on the findings from the UCLA study that you mention.
NIDANIH 3 weeks ago
@Leva1234 Marijuana itself is an unlikely medication candidate because the unpurified plant contains numerous chemicals with unknown health effects. The research continues. FDA-approved medications containing some of marijuana’s active ingredients are currently available, and scientists are actively engaged in the pursuit of a new generation of safe and effective medications.

Marijuana only causes physical addiction, like jogging for example. ALL of the effects they listed on this video are short term and can be avoided by using it in a safe environment, and who cares how many chemicals it contains if they can't affect you in a bad way. That part where they show different names is just a stupid way to fill the leftover time because they can't think of any other bad things about it...
irozimaXx 2 months ago
@irozimaXx it can cause psychological not physical addiction physical addiction means you go through withdrawals (like shaking) if you stop psychological means you just want to do it cause its fun (like watching TV) and most of the other stuff not only can be avoided by being in a safe environment but just plain isn't true
odstcheif 2 months ago
@odstcheif Although symptoms can definitely differ in severity, long-term marijuana abusers trying to quit report withdrawal symptoms including: irritability, sleeplessness, decreased appetite, anxiety, and drug craving, all of which can make it difficult to remain abstinent. These symptoms begin within about 1 day following abstinence, peak at 2-3 days, and subside within 1 or 2 weeks following drug cessation. See nida.nih.gov/DrugPages/Marijuana.html for more information.

For more information see the March 2002 issue of the Journal of the AMA and the April 2002 issue of the Canadian Medica
mustsleepmore 3 months ago
@mustsleepmore Scientific research builds upon itself. No single research study is definitive, as it is necessarily constricted to specific parameters (study population, research design, etc.). You correctly identify the parameters for long-term marijuana use (23.9 years) in the 2002 JAMA article you reference and the conclusions about people who discontinue their use.
NIDANIH 3 months ago
@mustsleepmore Another conclusion of the article is that “long-term heavy cannabis users show impairments in memory and attention that endure beyond the period of intoxication and worsen with increasing years of regular cannabis use.”
NIDANIH 3 months ago
@mustsleepmore Perhaps the most important point, as you also allude to (i.e., effects only in “SOME users”), is that the effects one experiences depend on factors related to both the drug (quality, amount, length of use) and the individual (genetics, physiology, environment).
NIDANIH 3 months ago
When you're high, you don't feel like driving around, or going to school. You want to sit at home, watch tv, think, and eat. It does NOT cause violent actions like liquor. It does NOT have any single physically addictive chemicals or compounds like nicotine found in tobacco. It does NOT result in serious hospital visits, mostly just people that are high by eating brownies on accident, and this effect doesn't last very long. It is MUCH safer than some other legal drugs. It HAS medical properties.
FerminINC 3 months ago
@FerminINC While derived from a plant, marijuana contains more than 400 chemical constituents, with Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) being the main psychoactive ingredient. THC binds to receptors in brain areas that influence pleasure, memory, thought, concentration, sensory and time perception, appetite, pain, and movement coordination.
NIDANIH 3 months ago
@NIDANIH The whole "400 chemical constituent" scare tactic is such garbage. Sure it has 400 chemicals, but coffee has many more. THC can make CB1 receptors in the brain send different messages, including ones to KILL CANCER CELLS! That should be excuse enough to make it a legal medication!
FerminINC 3 months ago
@FerminINC While a few preclinical (non-human) studies have shown promise with THC in some types of cancer, the amount of THC used was generally much greater than that obtained through normal marijuana use—and it was targeted directly to the cancer cells. In addition, some other studies (mostly epidemiological) have shown a possible link between marijuana use and increased rates of various cancers. Studies on both sides are too preliminary to draw any conclusions at this time.
NIDANIH 3 months ago
@FerminINC Whatever you chose to do, make sure you inform your doctor. Drug interactions can be very dangerous and unpredictable. The fact that it is “natural” does not reduce the risk - even the humble grapefruit can cause dangerous interactions with several medications!
NIDANIH 3 months ago
@FerminINC This is why marijuana can have wide ranging effects, including altered judgment and decision making (like not going to school and staying on the couch eating junk food), impaired short-term memory, increased heart rate, and, yes, even addiction.

divinedido 7 months ago
@divinedido - Just as with alcohol, everyone reacts to drugs differently – some people who have a glass of wine after a busy day find that they NEED that glass – and then it escalates to more than a glass. Same is true with marijuana. While not everyone becomes addicted immediately, some do. And yes, marijuana has harmed people – in fact, marijuana is the most commonly identified illicit drug in fatal accidents (~14% of drivers)!
NIDANIH 6 months ago
@NIDANIH I find it hard to believe marijuana cause more accidents than drunk driving. Besides it has been proven time and time again that marijuana DOES NOT cause physical dependency, only addiction to it's effect. And addiction is the key word, because it does not cause symptomps of withdrawal, compared to other drugs like heroin, cocaine and event over the counter "safe and legal" drugs like OxyContin and Vicodin. We are in a time where the OTC drugs are stronger than anything on the streets
divinedido 6 months ago
@divinedido - Thank you for your thoughtful remarks. You are correct in noting that drunk driving is a major cause of accidents. In our response, we were only noting the fact that 14% of drivers in fatal accidents tested positive for marijuana, which doesn’t preclude their having alcohol and/or other drugs in their system as well.
NIDANIH 6 months ago
@divinedido (cont.) - On your second point, individuals who find themselves addicted to anything can experience actual physical withdrawal symptoms, though different substances cause different symptoms, some more severe than others. With marijuana, these symptoms are similar in type and severity to those of nicotine withdrawal—irritability, sleeping difficulties, anxiety, and craving—which often prompt relapse.
NIDANIH 6 months ago
@divinedido (cont.) - Withdrawal symptoms peak a few days after use has stopped and dissipate within about 2 weeks. And while these symptoms do not pose an immediate threat to the health of the user, they can make it hard for someone to remain abstinent. Finally, good point about prescription drug abuse, a very real and serious problem, which NIDA is addressing on multiple fronts.

Xrazor4Games93 9 months ago
@Xrazor4Games93 - As a public health institute at the National Institutes of Health, NIDA is focused on presenting research-backed information, with the goal of informing and educating the public about all drugs of abuse—and that includes tobacco and alcohol, which, as you correctly state, kill people in large numbers.
NIDANIH 8 months ago
@NIDANIH Yeah it's just that alcohol and tobacco are illegal while the government wages a futile War on Marijuana when it is safer than both alcohol and tobacco, in terms of addiction rate and the damage it does to one's body. Police arrest otherwise non-violent people for marijuana possession. Drug cartels from Mexico make over half their money on marijuana, something that wouldn't occur if it were legal. If you truly based policy on "research-backed information," then marijuana would be legal
WhatABeefcake 8 months ago
@WhatABeefcake - NIDA doesn't set policy--we support research to learn more about drugs' effects on the brain and body.
NIDANIH 8 months ago
@NIDANIH
Reply or send me a pm please
knight5659 8 months ago
@knight5659 - You raise an interesting question – is there a distinction between medical and psychological addiction? The mind and the brain are not so easily separated from one another. Addiction happens as a result of brain changes (physical) from repeated drug use, which causes people to have difficulty controlling their drug use even though it interferes with many aspects of their lives (behavioral).
NIDANIH 8 months ago
@knight5659 - This isn’t true for everyone who uses marijuana, but it is true for about 11% of people who use marijuana. And when they stop, they may suffer from withdrawal symptoms similar to those for nicotine withdrawal.
NIDANIH 8 months ago
@NIDANIH I'll give you that but if all these people were informed that they are linked from mental addiction( Changing the way you think to making you feel differently and wanting it more and more) If they knew that it doesn't happen ~90% of the time then would it be outrageous to assume that it might put them in a better mindset. Based on my assumption that some if not most of the 11% of people were tricked into the addiction symptoms from misinformation. (Placebo effect)
knight5659 8 months ago
@knight5659 - And while THC—the active ingredient in marijuana—may have medicinal properties, the research is really in too early of a stage to say it fights cancer cells. That said, there are FDA-approved marijuana-based medications to treat chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting that cannot be controlled by other antiemetic agents.
NIDANIH 8 months ago
@NIDANIH I cannot remember everything accurately but on WebMD when I was researching cancer it said the THC sends instructions to the cancerous cells making them literally eat themselves. And, the reason the tests are in too early of a stage is because whenever someone tried these tests in the past the results were shunned and the government made it hard to get the marijuana for testing.
And, some people don't want to depend on pharmaceutical companies for everything
knight5659 8 months ago
@knight5659 - You are correct that there are studies looking at various components of marijuana (e.g., THC) for their potential medicinal properties. In fact, NIDA research to understand how marijuana works in the brain and body led to the discovery of the endocannabinoid system, which is targeted by THC and might be harnessed for medical benefits.
NIDANIH 8 months ago
@NIDANIH Here is the number for the patent owned by the U.S. Government extolling the potential neuro protecting properties of Cannabinoids. U.S. Patent Number: 6,630,507. Google it!
Number1POTter 6 months ago
@knight5659 - Oral cannabinoid medications avoid the adverse effects of smoked marijuana and could help such medical conditions/symptoms as pain, nausea, obesity, wasting disease, addiction, autoimmune disorders, etc.
NIDANIH 8 months ago

One you join the treatment program you are tagged as a "Addict"
hadowsay1 10 months ago
@hadowsay1, @SpassMacher2000, @Bpowderr, @sk8249, @donttakeitseriously, @Schlauton, @TheRezo420: We have received many comments lately about those in treatment for marijuana being there because of a court-mandated sentence or treatment-vs.-jail option, along with other comments questioning marijuana’s addictiveness.
NIDANIH 10 months ago
First, regardless of how people enter treatment, 4.3 million Americans 12 and older abuse or are addicted to marijuana, according to the highly respected National Survey on Drug Use and Health (supported by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration [SAMHSA]), which uses clinical criteria from the venerable Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM-IV) to make that determination.
NIDANIH 10 months ago
The DSM-IV is the “bible” of any professional who diagnoses mental health disorders, including drug abuse and addiction. Second, while many do enter treatment via the criminal justice system, many others do so voluntarily. According to the latest Treatment Episode Data Set, also put out by SAMHSA, of the approximate 322,000 marijuana treatment admissions in 2008, just over half (57%) were from a criminal justice/DUI referral.

MrRepelrepent 11 months ago
@MrRepelrepent : Actually, the jury is still out on the link between marijuana smoking and cancer. As far as prescription and over-the-counter medications, we have a lot of information, including other videos, on their associated risks—only we chose not to include that in a video about marijuana. And abusing drugs is risky behavior, which, counter your statement, does produce other risky behaviors—more than when drugs are not abused. The research is clear on that.
NIDANIH 10 months ago
Wow, literally everything in this video is pure propaganda with no research to back it up, at least not presented. (it doesn't exist) I have been smoking for 5 years and never had problems in school and it doesn't even get you blasted like this video might try to convince you. You just get a kind of fuzzy feeling. But omg, lets still support the big tobacco companies and alcohol because they are safer right?

sk8249 11 months ago
Smoking any kind of burning material is unhealthy. Most anyone knows this. However, just because smoking is unhealthy does not mean that cannabis is unhealthy. Cannabis can be ingested in a number of ways now. It can be vaporized, eaten, tinctures can be made with it. People who need cannabis for medicinal purposes don't have to smoke it to get the healthy relief they need.
As for that link whoever posted about cannabis addiction, you couldn't have chosen a worse link to prove your point.
75pearl75 11 months ago
@75pearl75, @elvenflow: Several comments of late suggest that our decisions for what research to support are guided by politics and that we refuse to support research on the potential benefits of marijuana. As we’ve said before on this site, NIDA and other NIH Institutes do support research on the positive health benefits stemming from marijuana’s active ingredients, including THC, and on the body’s endocannabinoid system where marijuana acts.
NIDANIH 10 months ago
Support of this research recognizes potential benefits for treating pain, nausea, obesity, wasting disease, addiction, autoimmune disorders, etc. To be funded, studies must have scientific rigor—that is, they meet accepted standards of scientific design and, on the basis of peer review, public health significance, and Institute priorities, are competitive with other applications that qualify for funding.
NIDANIH 10 months ago
@NIDANIH The "Abused or addicted" statistic is extremely misleading. I wonder how many of those were " cannabis abusers" and how many of those were " cannabis addicts". By definition ALMOST EVERY USER of marijuana is an abuser because they use it to get high. Also of the people in treatment how many of them are there because the court gave them the option of rehab or jail for a possession charge? I would bet a lot and since they are choose rehab over jail they are considered "addicts".
TheRezo420 11 months ago
From the New York Times Article "Researchers Find Study of Medical Marijuana Discouraged"
“As the National Institute on Drug Abuse, our focus is primarily on the negative consequences of marijuana use,” said Shirley Simson, a spokeswoman for the drug abuse institute, known as NIDA. “We generally do not fund research focused on the potential beneficial medical effects of marijuana.”
And your agency has to approve all studies on cannabis? Fox guarding the henhouse, much?
elvenflow 11 months ago
Any research into postive benefits of cannabis is actively discouraged by the US government
From The New York Times article "Researchers Find Study of Medical Marijuana Discouraged"
"Marijuana is the only major drug for which the federal government controls the only legal research supply and for which the government requires a special scientific review"
How can you properly call youselves scientists, since your "research" is determined by politics, not the scientific method?
elvenflow 11 months ago
@elvenflow - Actually, NIDA’s research portfolio does include research on the positive health benefits stemming from marijuana’s active ingredient, THC, and on the body’s endocannabinoid system where marijuana acts. Among the conditions/symptoms that could be targeted are pain, nausea, obesity, wasting disease, addiction, autoimmune disorders, etc. Currently, there are two FDA-approved oral THC medications, however, smoked marijuana has not been FDA approved as a medicine.
NIDANIH 10 months ago
@elvenflow - To your main point, NIH has and will support studies on both the adverse effects and therapeutic uses for marijuana, provided the research proposals have scientific rigor—that is, they meet accepted standards of scientific design and, on the basis of peer review, public health significance, and Institute priorities, are competitive with other applications that qualify for funding.
NIDANIH 10 months ago
@elvenflow - The most promising research to date has been on cannabinoids—compounds that bind to the same receptor(s) as marijuana’s active ingredient, THC—rather than smoked marijuana itself. In that vein, NIDA does support a substantial research portfolio to elucidate the role of cannabinoids in normal brain and body physiology. Ultimately, this research may help uncover potential therapeutic compounds to treat addiction and pain, with low risk of abuse.

NIDANIH 11 months ago
@NIDANIH So if I created a post with Carlan's list of dirty words, then you'd allow the comment?
The people posting on the forum for this video are, mostly, not you or the organization you represent. Therefore, I believe that your defense of comment screening is a straw man argument. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Also, have you guys seen any reports detailing the number of marijuana addicts? I have not been able to find any statistics.
Cheers.
jesuriah 11 months ago
@jesuriah In answer to your first question: No, we could not post profanity, because it violates our comment policy, a link to which accompanies every video description. So no straw man here. Here’s an excerpt from that policy that pertains to the question at hand: “Personal attacks, profanity, and aggressive behavior are prohibited. Instigating arguments in a disrespectful way is also prohibited.”
NIDANIH 11 months ago
@jesuriah We seek to make this forum informative and to provide a way for interested people to interact with us in a respectful way. NIDA is a public health agency whose mission is to lead the way in supporting research on drug abuse and addiction and to disseminate those results to help stop the devastating consequences of addiction in this country. Which leads into your second question.
NIDANIH 11 months ago
@jesuriah According to the annual National Survey on Drug Use and Health, a highly respected instrument for revealing drug use trends among those 12 and older in this country, more people were abused or were addicted to marijuana than any other drug—4.3 million in 2009.
NIDANIH 11 months ago
@jesuriah Latest treatment data show that in 2008, approximately 15 percent of people entering drug abuse treatment programs reported marijuana as their primary drug of abuse; that rate goes up to 61 percent for people under 15 and 56 percent for those 15 to 19 years old.
NIDANIH 11 months ago
@NIDANIH Many people found guilty of possession of cannabis are required to take some form of drug counseling/ treatment program, along with community service, and possibly drug screening. Being forced to take a drug abuse program because of what the law says in no way proves that those people are addicted to or believe they are addicted to cannabis.

NIDANIH 10 months ago
@NIDANIH Ooo great statistic. You know what happens. Kid gets caught and is told that they either get a terrible punishment or go to rehab. Of course they go to rehab. Statistics like that do not prove it is addicting.
Schlauton 11 months ago
@NIDANIH
Educate on the medicinal benefits of this medicine, as well as the harmless recreational use.
donttakeitseriously 11 months ago
@NIDANIH you do realize that those numbers are skewed because many of those people seeking drug abuse treatment are doing so because its mandated by the court.
SpassMacher2000 10 months ago
@NIDANIH what you are hiding in this statement is how many of these people entered drug abuse problems on their own? was it because of a court order or family pressure? also you choose to ignore facts that prescription drugs kill more than ALL the deaths of every illicit drugs
Leva1234 10 months ago
@Leva1234 - Although many people enter treatment for marijuana and other illegal drug use under a court mandate, they nonetheless have outcomes similar to those who enter voluntarily, which is interesting. Also, we do not ignore prescription drug abuse and agree it poses an urgent public health threat—just not covered here in a video on marijuana abuse.

Obviously America wants cannabis legalized and studied more in depth without government restrictions getting in the way. You guys have been stalling for 40 years, does it really take that long to study a plant?
sleepless4201 1 year ago
@sleepless4201 - Since you asked, NIDA is studying the effects of marijuana and THC in the brain and peripheral networks, for multiple reasons, including to better understand potential benefits for a variety of ailments. It’s more than studying a plant (which would be botany), it’s rather neuroscience.
NIDANIH 1 year ago
