  • I remember when this happened! I live in Kenton, and nearby the train tracks too it passed by on!

  • If the engineer had had a heart attack, the dead-man's brake would have applied automatically to stop the train. If the switch is not toggled by the engineer from time to time, the brake applies automatically. Don't the authorities know this? (My grandfather was an engineer for Union Pacific for 30 years)

  • 1:25 An engineer mange to jump on board and apply the brakes? Not the engineer they showed!

  • is that real?

  • That reporter guy with the glasses really reminds me of Ned Flanders

  • @MrMintyk hahahhahaahahah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ye he dose...looooooooooooooool

  • Movie script was way better than the real story lol

  • Looks like somebody got out of the cab and tried to switch the pionts and the idle brakes witch faild and it took off dewey :)

  • Is the crazy 8's locomotive still in operation?

  • @thezombiekiller5500 Maybe if they replaced the break shoes...

  • No it wasn't the actual train brake, It was the dynamics.

  • actually there was 1 injury when the guy tryed to climb back on and got draged for 1/4 a mile just saying....:D

  • looks like dewey used to work for CSX until he let 8888 get away

  • Whiotv

  • And does anyone else think its kinda funny how its talking about trains and then it has a severe t-storm watch and warning in the corner

  • @SteamboatWilley and that's how "Unstoppable" was born

  • "...like something out of a hollywood action movie..."

Someone in Hollywood must have seen this and had an idea.

  • Very nice footage...thumbs up!

Where did you get the locomotives from TrainZ simulator??

  • I can't believe the thing's number was 8888. What's the chance of that? No wonder where "Unstoppable" got the 777 from. And yeah, Super 8?

  • HOLY TOLEDO!!!

  • Gremlins

  • It not hard for trains to get rolling fast. The weight of all there cars behind it is forcing down hills and back up them. Its the same principle use in yard humps.

  • haha SUPER 8!! ;D

  • Unstoppable. Was a true story

  • Today we almost died

  • SUPER 8!!! haha

  • Thats pretty amazing that he had all 3 brakes set Mr "wildfire". If you knew a little more about locomotive operations you would know that Dynamics only work when the train is moving. Kinda like a jake brake.

  • copy train

  • everything that was shown during Crazy 8 was in Unstoppable from the sheriff shooting the fuel tank, the failed helicopter drop onto the cab,the failed attempt to to use portable derails, switchers hooking on to the front and back, the first attempt to jump on board, and a hero applying the brakes

  • @geomodelrailroader Not quite. They never did a helecopter lowering of a man. Also, no locomotives were coupled onto the front of it. That would be far to dangerous. In the movie yes, in the real event, no

  • @metraF40PH163 LOL my mistake

  • some railroads had what is called the dead mans switch. Once the operator took his foot off the switch, It applied the brakes and closed the throttle

  • o and back in the 50s i know the PRR in there diesel engines they had a safey setup were if the driver didnt repond to there calls or he couldnt the engine after a few seconds would shut it self down and come to a complete stop now i thought that was a good idea to have and that was back in the 1950s why didnt they have somthing like that in our modern engines today?

  • @grizzleybearz282004 They do. It's called an alerter. After a certain time period it will sound, and the engineer has to press the acknowledge button or do something like blow the horn or move the throttle. If it's not done in time the brakes will apply. However most older locomotives like the one here don't have it. The deadman's switch was pretty much done away with because it could be easily bypassed with a weight or a wedge.

  • @wildfire19861987 thanks for the info i seen a C.P railroad video were two engine hit headon because the one driver placed his lunchbox on the pedal and feel asleep

  • @grizzleybearz282004 After I posted that I found a web page on the incident. Turns out the engine DID have an alerter. What happened was the engineer had to stop because a switch wan't lined, so he set all 3 brakes (train, independent, and dynamic), and got off to line it. Unfortunately he somehow moved the THROTTLE instead of the dynamic handle, and by the time he realized it the train was moving. He tried to get back on but it was going too fast, and he got drugged over 50' (continued)

  • @wildfire19861987 With the independent brakes set the alerter won't work. And since the train was doing yard switching none of the cars had the air brakes cut in, and the loco brakes were no match for 3,000hp so they burned up.

I've got the link to the page if you're interested.

  • @wildfire19861987 well that had to suck did he live years ago when i was in my last year of high school i was looking to be apart of the railroad and my foot in the door was going to be with new jersey transit but my father & grand father talked me out of it saying it would take along time to move up as a driver in the railroad bizz they said i would make more money faster as a truck driver and i did but there alot of hard work i always though about what if i when with i realy wanted to do

  • in the other video about this engine they said it was being worked on in the yard but yet they had all these freight cars hooded up to the engine do the railyards work on there engine when there loaded?

  • Why did they slow some of the footage down!?

  • they strecthed the truth in the movie because it was only going 40 mph in the movie it was going 70 mph and 80 mph

  • "The train mysteriously took off on it's own". Is that easier to say then some doofus screwed up?

  • Did Dan Rather have a source from Amarillo that blamed this on Bush?

  • I saw CSX #8888 at Fostoria Ohio last night and I missed getting it on video!!! :(

  • Unstoppable!! i watched the movie. it's great, can recommend to anybody.

  • If you see CSX loco #8888,dont mess with it. It has a mind of its own. It probably seen that its days were numbered and decided to run.

  • Great movie lol

  • Imagine this while you were railfanning. Dear god I'd crap myself.

  • Poor Ns boxcar

  • "but this was no movie" lol it is now.

  • like something from a hollywood action movie, now there is an action movie

  • 0:33 well now its a movie! =D

  • I rember this like yesterday.

  • The dope operating it got off it to pull a track switch when he left the throttle at full speed
