@ladiefoxxy thats an ignorant comment there's plenty rappers like him as poetry is a form of expression rap is too...just think about what youre saying first
Also, I love that he has provoked the conversation that he has, because that's what poetry is supposed to do. He is expressing his opinions and views and at the same time, trying to lift up other people who aren't there yet. To say, that we need to stop talking about the impact of slavery is unrealistic. It is a big part of so many people's lives - all races, not just black. You have to know your history if you don't want to repeat it.
@etollive Please please please look at my poem called Somalia on my page, im a young poet just trying to get an audience. Please and thank you. please like this comment aswell to make it top rated please .please once more ,its my dream to be on something like def poetry jam
@2conscious I didn't navigate specifically the Daniel Beaty. I navigated to "Def Jam Poetry", and yes I realize what I watched was largely self-incurred, but good poetry doesn't need the soul food that has all those black audience members nodding their heads. There doesn't need to be so much pain and hardship. But there is. And I accept that unwillingly.
@MikeLenoch5: You didn't just navigate to ANY poet. That's like "navigating" to James Baldwin's commentaries on society and getting all offended about it. DON'T WATCH IT. These are specific experiences we endure. Martin Luther King's vision and words have been dissected, and manipulated. He said MANY things, not just based on 1 speech exploited by the shadow government to dumb-down the masses. Please navigate to jews and discuss your DISGUST for their beliefs as "CHOSEN" over others.
@MikeLenoch5; I wish Jews would stop being so jewish and crying "discrimination" everytime when the very BASIS of their beliefs says they are "CHOSEN" over others. I wish Asians weren't so culturally arrogant and inclined. You see, WHY do so-called "progressives" like yourself, navigate to pages which speak to a SPECIFIC experience (as a black male) and get so threatened and hyper-sensitive??
@2conscious Don't get me wrong, I'm not offended, nor threatened, but rather my intent is for people to someday come together in one form or another, to crumble the ghettos, and destructive words we have for the respective races that make up this nation, and to for at least once, be united. If you look at European nations that admit fewer immigrants than the US, the populace seems more apt to come together in times of hardship, but in the US, we just go our separate ways, watch TV, and go home.
@2conscious Also, I feel my desire for people to be united in this nation is not too far removed from the wishes of the venerable Martin Luther King Jr.
And just because I may desire unity, doesn't mean I cannot enjoy brilliant poetry, as Daniel Beaty is known for.
Yes we have issues specific to specific races. Yes we use phrases for other races that shouldn't be used. You see, the words "black", "white", or "asian" only draw lines, rather than open up arms.
@2conscious Words that describe race draw lines rather than invite. They separate rather than include. They hurt more than they comfort. They ultimately contribute to the disjointedness of the US as a whole.
Well done, but does he HAVE to point out race at every possible avenue? I find it incessant and racist--not in that he is discriminatory, but that he always feels the need to standout as "proudly black". Why can't we be united as humans, as Americans, as fellow sisters and fellow brothers? Why do we we use such exclusionary adjectives that only serve to divide?
@MikeLenoch5 i don't know if you understand the meaning of this poem. the thing he is talking about doesnt affect everyone else as much as it affect black people. he is talking about thing that happen in black community. the endless cycle of iresposible black men who don't take resposiblity for their children and causing those children to be just like their fathers even though they have noit seen their father. its not the fact that he is tryiung to separate race.
@MikeLenoch5 it's only because of people like this that the world that you're talking about is possible. we have to explore difficult issues to get to our better world.
It is easier said than done slavery has alienated black men so much mentally and socially that black men now have to learn to be proud of who they are and that is what he is trying to do. I don't think he is trying to promote black supremacy or anything like that but one can not underplay the tragic consequences of slavery
You know, I've often held that opinion in the past, but as I read your comment, a new thought (based on the last few year's experience) crossed my mind, "All artists are centered around only a few large ideas."
Serious athlete's relate much of life's experience to their sport(s) of choice, philosophers will spend years on entire lives focused on developing only a few basic concepts, etc. How could a person who sees racial issues every day NOT treat it similarly?
YES! Like a sermon... great great job Daniel. As a poet & artist I know when I see authentic passion & the God within a spirit and I see it in you. Wonderful delivery. I'm not familiar with all of your past work aside for a video my poet friend posted recently of you on Def Poetry that jogged my memory of you on the show, and it led me here.
I just saw the play this weekend at Union Sq. theatre and it was mindblowing. I'm a theatre student, so I've seen quite a lot of plays - Through the Night is definitely among the best of those. Thank you Mr. Beaty
THIS IS MY SHIT! :) Thank you Daniel Beaty!
