  • These shows make me love Amish people.

  • the girls must be bushy. lol

  • it's a shame the documentary maker seems to have such contempt for the Amish way of life - it's really coloured the whole production.

  • They seem like kind wholesome people. Legalistic and a bit deluded in some regards....but they are decent people who care about their families.

    They don't hurt anybody

  • 13:22 Have a Beer or 2.

  • the dude at 7:05 looks and sounds soo much like badger from breaking bad.

  • I have lost respect for the man. He goes from working non-stop, to not working and depending on God (and other people) to provide for his family. He convinces another family to leave everything behind and then snubs the other man for not comfronting the people from his previous church? Easy when you get shunned BUT your family and your wife's family are still there for you (which is an huge exception). I think he should read the back of his "million" dollars bills.

  • @1caramarie you took the words right out my mouth

  • @1caramarie Thats so true he abandoned everything from his old faith and what I like about the amish is they don't try convert anybody. Also now he thinks god will fix it .I can't stand those people who try to convert other, the way he is now he justifies himself to old scriptures instead of a bishops now he is really going into the other extreme.

  • Background:

ethan& his wife were millionaires from selling his biggish farm a couple years ago( see his first bbc doco)

But god guided him to give ALL his money to a charity (for needy christians).

His a sweet man but a psychotic evangelical-his poor kids,he cant afford send them to school/college etc now.faith has made him blind.

  • @pickasomangoes $100,000 is NOT millionaires, the rest was a mortgage. College?

  • similar to the Catholic leaders, the Amish leaders are far to rigid re cultural rules.-ostracizing there once loyal followers.

Catholics have lost millions of followers by not allowing condoms, women priests etc -idiot religions.

  • I don't like Ephraim. He seems like a free- loading zealot. I don't know why but he kind of gives me the creeps.

  • @pswank7 shame it seemed like he wasnt a freeloader in his old society...

  • Those poor amish.Out of the frying pan and into the fire.

  • religious people are afraid of hell, spiritual people have already been there.

  • so how do I get on this "free house" list

  • Galatians 1:10 Obviously, I'm not trying to win the approval of people, but of God. If pleasing people were my goal, I would not be Christ's servant.

  • wow jessie's voice.....kind've annoying. good story none the less :)

  • @patmrhottiepantz Looked like he had throat surgery or something by what looked like a scar on his neck. (?)

  • how Jewish is too destroy a house beacuse is "mouldy" (not Kosher)?!?!

  • @nino71 I'm not sure what you are asking, but I don't think they need to follow the Bible to the letter in this particular sense if the mold can be gotten rid of via chemicals. But they do need to follow their convictions and grow in their own way and time. They are not following man now but figuring it out on their own by their reading of God's Word and following Him (and not man) the best they know how. That is to be respected. :-)

  • @BibleStudy888 if a house is taken over by mold, there is no chemical that can fix it. That's about the only solution and not because the Bible says so.

  • Their method of dealing with teenage rebelliousness - fucking amazing.

  • @Eyedunno its tesmtament to their ablity to program humans.those kids have lived this way all their life, so when they are given freedome sudenly they dont know what do with it. its kida like abused wife returning to her abusive husband. if they did not return that whuld mean they had to change their way of life. and that whuld be fighting against the programing that was ingrained in them from childhood. this is why child soldiers keep getting back towars even when they have trauma.

  • his wife looks like Tina Fey

  • @richarddominichughes And he looks like Claud from heroes

  • Religion is dumb when you follow it to the letter, and even dumber when you do that and start making your own assumptions about the texts... RELIGION = PEOPLE AFRAID OF DEATH, AND THEIR LAST CHANCE OF ''CONTROLLING'' IT!

The only thing you can control for certain that will make an impact is how you treat other ppl.

  • @2lasiiJAkuppi Good thing the people in this moving are forsaking religion for relationship. :-)

  • Respond to this video... Does anyone know what the difference is between the white and black scarves? They are sitting in corresponding areas as well.

  • @2lasiiJAkuppi and i do believe that was a big part of JC's message ... religion does often get in the way of the truth

  • I don't know if there's any requirement for born-again Christians to follow the Mosaic Law strictly speaking (the moral law yes, though). And anyway... surely there's mold cleaner these days?

  • @thelyniezian

Well, yes, but that's the rub - what is the moral law? Stoning gay people and disobedient children to death? I would say those aren't sacrificial laws but moral laws. Yet Christians all over rightly reject these, often because they think the laws Jesus got rid of comprise roughly... I don't know... all of the Old Testament aside from the Ten Commandments? Don't get me wrong though; I'm glad they're treating the Bible as the Big Book of Multiple Choice: it's less crazy that way.

  • @Eyedunno Stoning people to death is a specific punishment, and is part of the civil law, not the moral law. The moral law is the principles which define what is right or not for a person to do, so for example we might believe it is right to be an obedient son, or not to have sex with someone the same gender as yourself, but without reference to any penalty for not being so. That reason being: firstly, it was given for the the Israelites and those living in the Land as part of the covenant;

  • @thelyniezian second, there is forgiveness available for those who repent (turn away from sin- that is, wrongdoing and whatever falls short of God's perfect standard) and accept Jesus as Lord and Saviour, and Christ is the end of the Law for those that believe, IIRC.

In the former case, unless you are a Jew or living ion the land of Israel, then it may be argued the Law wasn't given to you, though you can still sin against God, and the Law still gives some indication of what God requires of us.

  • @thelyniezian

Fair enough. So picking up sticks on the sabbath is morally wrong, but Jesus removed the specific penalty for doing so (stoning!)? And what about the glaring omissions - arson, vandalism, abortion (I don't generally think this is wrong, but lots of Christians seem to think so, in spite of no biblical proscriptions, save the thing about paying 5 shekels if you cause a miscarriage by striking), rape (if it's your own wife), etc.

  • @Eyedunno I am not talking about the sabbath, as it seems to me that it is not a required ordinance of Christians (some disagree) but a shadow of something greater, that is, the resting from our own works (in order to try and gain salvation or try to prove ourselves 'good') found by the believer in trusting Jesus in faith.

I will say that the Christian is not required to keep the law. However, as divinely inspied scripture, it still gives some insight into what God considers right and wrong.

  • @thelyniezian For example, no-one has a problem with things like 'do not kill' (in context, murder, not enact the death penalty or wage war), 'do not steal', 'do not commit adultery', 'do not bear false witness' and so on- as in the main we know they are wrong, and in a few cases (not adultery per se) still have laws against them. We would not get rid of those. Likewise, there are other things mentioned which it is clear are wrong, and must take those into account.

  • I had more respect for him when he was with the amish he has turned into a very judgemental man that is just as bad as the almish i wish i could personally talk to him but i doubt if it would do any good

  • This is an amazing documentary. I am fascinated by these people and I hope the best for them.

  • the soundtrack is insufferable.

  • crazy people.all of them

  • @vivekrbs lol

  • Funny how people get on their knees to pray and moan about how admirable life is for the good ol' Amish folk.

But when Muslim ladies wear a burka, living under a set of social strict rules by choice, people shit their pants, raise their angry fists to the sky in a fit of anger and feverishly yell with foam in their mouth "ISLAM HATE WOMEN".

  • I don't suppose the Amish are overly concerned about old age or becoming wealthy or educated.

They have lived like this for centuries - Who are we to tell them how to live with our AIDS epidemics, nuclear warheads, bank bailouts, drug problems, alcohol problems, high prison populations, car exhaust pollution, climate change, Super riches & starvation in the outside world etc, etc?

Do they have any of this?

  • @drs7773ify what about scientific cures advances in modern medicine and freedom of choice

  • Sure, the Amish use modern medicine (the previous BBC programme shows Ephraim's daughter being treated for leukemia). But due to their lack of education (only up through the 8th grade, and without science) they will never produce doctors in their communities (go to high school, and you've left). So for all the "we are self-sufficient" - they AREN'T.

Neither are any of the other various religious subcultures in the US that shun secular education, for that matter.

  • At 11:33, that's what I've been thinking throughout this whole thing.

  • @oilynose Ephraim's gone mad

  • Come on America, seriously?

  • @PureZOOKS What kind of comment is that? It's an smallish community on the outskirts of society and you're generalizing all of America because of it? And isn't it a good thing that America allows them to do what they want to do without forcing them into greater society?

And I would hardly call them Americans either. Since they've moved from Germany and Switzerland they've kept to themselves. They don't even speak English except with outsiders. They speak some form of Dutch.

  • @nothing980454 My meaning behind that wasn't clear so I shall explain myself.

My point was that America, instead of taking these poor, stupid hateful people and educating them, just allow them to do what they like. They are in the sense of intelligence and sense, slowing the human race down, and America is just sitting ideally by and letting them.

  • @PureZOOKS Eh. They aren't slowing anyone down. The human race is moving forward (or slowing down) with or without the Amish. If anything, the fact that they are separate from society and don't use the internet or preach to other people shows how meaningless they are to the human race. They basically don't even exist to the outside world.

Aside from that, what would you suggest America do anyway? It's what they want to do and that freedom is guaranteed under the Constitution.

  • @nothing980454 i'd argue back, but i'm tired, so reply with liek a dot to this and I'll answer tommorow.

  • @PureZOOKS .

  • @nothing980454 ok i' m back.

They very much are, they are suffering due to their ignorance of modern medicine and modern technology, they require an education that America is just not giving them.

  • @PureZOOKS They are probably a lot healthier than greater America, wouldn't you say? It's not like being American is an example of the epitome of health, what with our fast food and such.

Also, they use modern medicine when they're sick.

And they seem to be doing just fine without modern technology. I think it would be wrong for the gov't to force feed anything to them. They may be kinda looney but they aren't hurting anyone. And they're actually good for the economy.

  • @nothing980454 a lot healthier? These people do not have vaccines, transplants, surgery of any description, and many of them die a young age of around 55 pointlessly. They use older forms of farming equipment like spades as opposed to forks, this makes their lives just that much harder and they can get dangerous disorders from that. Far from "doing just fine"

  • @PureZOOKS I don't know where you got any of your information because none of it is true. Most Amish children get vaccines. And they try to live as naturally as possible by using medicinal herbs instead of Western medicine but they will go to the doctor if they must. Some are more conservative than others and will choose to abstain longer, just as regular Americans can abstain from doctors visits if they so choose.

Also, their life expectancy is the exact same as everyone else.

  • @PureZOOKS .

  • He does seem quite proud.

  • Ephraim is a hypocrite, rejecting his friend and standing in judgement of his decision. Jesse, well done that man!!

  • @outfromtheshadows I was thinking the same thing...I'm disappointed to see that.

  • why cant they get jobs to pay for rent themselves like everyone else?

  • The bible says seal up the moldy house for 10 days and if it increases, tear it down. lol oh geez.
