My daughter plays hockey. A year or so ago, she was complaining to her dad (also her coach) about doing "herbies". I asked what they were, and she described the drill. This is what they do - goal line to blue line to goal line... I love that they're named after Herb Brooks!

There are very few real-life coaches like the great Clair Bee, but Herb was surely one of them in his own way. He did what he had to do in order to mold them into Olympic Champions. Don't like it? Herb Brooks was a great motivational coach. Tough on his players, no doubt. But I don't think there was another coach around at the time of the 1980 Olympics, amateur or professional, who could have gotten as much out of his players as Coach Brooks did.

The only BS depiction was the Hollywood created scene with Rizzo dramatically saying he plays for Team USA..these were college kids that won at every level and they all knew what was at stake....But the Herbies, lights going off after a miserable effort in a 2-2 tie against the Norway b team actually happened...I remember how painstaking the director spent on getting the right scene..like taking 8-10 takes just to get a face-off win...didn't George Brett play a Russkie on a face-off in the film?

@ekimfloom when filming this scene they actually did these. this is one thing that the directer wanted to be 100% real. in the extras on the DVD they said a whole day was devoted to this scene. Such a powerful scene.

It actually did happen. The only inaccuracies I'm aware of... and I'm not sure but I don't think Jim Craig was there. They had to pull him earlier in the game. But yes, he did have them pulling "Herbies" for a while. Don't piss off Herb Brooks is the moral of the story.

I was watching the special featurs disc for this movie and it was ESPN roundtable with Eruzione, Schnieder, Craig and Kurt Russel. They started talkin bout how the Herbies really were, and Schnieder says that he got thrown out of this game so he was undressed watching everyone skate for an hour. Then Craig says that this was one of the few games that he didnt play so he didnt do them either. It was funny cuz then Eruzione is pissed at them cuz they didnt do the Herbies

Yes, he did make them do them. Mark Johnson broke his stick because he got angry, but since the rink was dark, Herb couldn't see who did it and he threatened to skate them until they died if anyone else broke a stick. And the next night, they played Norway again and beat them 9-0. Crazy, isn't it?

I LOVE football - played on championship teams from the age of 9 to 18 in Michigan and Texas. And I respect the nuance and strategy of baseball. But hockey is faster, the fights are tougher without the protection and it's 'ball' shows no mercy. And you can use neither your hands nor your feet - only a skinny fast moving weapon of a stick. And moving on the ice take a skill set that makes walking and running very very easy.
