  • Anyone know why amps have two channels? Can't it all be done with one? Just turn off the reverb and the vibrato?

  • @vonalxao1 I used to wonder about that, too. But I own both the Super Reverb and the Deluxe Reverb, and I can tell you that the channels sound different (aside from the reverb). The non-reverb Normal Channel sounds warmer.

  • You can reduce hum/noise in the amp by turning the volume on the unused channel down to zero.

  • I noticed the treble on 3, do you think the highs on this amp are harsh?

  • @tbdalva I wouldn't say harsh with good tubes but the DRRI is a bright sounding amp. The bright cap on the reverb channel was not clipped. Traditional electric jazz guitar tone has little highs, that is what I was aiming for.

  • so the deluxe reverbs and super reverbs sound the best?

  • @44eelz it depends

  • I used a cheap Chinese hollowbody jazz guitar with GFS Mean 90 pickups. Neck pickup with both tone and volume rolled back some in this clip. Webstrings New York flatwound strings. I traded the amp for a SRRI that I no longer own either.

  • a bit dead sounding, which is weird for a deluxe reverb. I've played some with nearly identical eq settings and the neck pickup and it sounded much brighter, but still doesn't sound bad (that's impossible *knocks on wood* for a Fender amp)

  • Great tune! Very useful demo.Thanks.

  • how do you like the reissue reverb??

  • some of the best jazz tone is acheived by diming your treble and cutting all your bass(there is usually no mid knob, which helps). If you need a warmer, more Wes Montgomery sound, you use your neck pickup and the tone knob. trust me, try it and you'll understand ;)

  • What is it everybody seems to have against treble anyway?? :D I mean, obviously you want a really warm tone for jazzy tunes like this, but I dunno', I'm a big fan of clarity too~shrug~ To each his own. Good playing!

  • personally i cant go with the high treble stuff. i can only see it happening in country and certain blues stuff. however, when i hear other people rock the high treble stuff (e.g. Carl Verheyen) it just sounds like gold

  • The reissue amp is way too bright. I didn't usually turn my treble past 3 because the tone was still really bright even at 3. I had to do some mods to mine to warm it up and make it sound more like a real 65 DR.

  • ~shrug~ I like bright.

  • @yobhsiFehT I've noticed that too. There is kind of a sonic reasoning behind it. The warm smooth overdrive a lot of people go for is primarily in the mids and so keeping the treble down allows you to turn up the amp a bit more at indoor overdriven volumes without having too much presence that cuts right to the ear. The problem is people tend to cut too much treble off not really realizing their tone is a bit too muffled.

  • @rossfloss

Except that, as you turn most amps up, they naturally lose treble/presence frequencies. Either way, tho, tonal preference or perceived volume issues, cutting too much treble is going to suck the liveliness out of the average guitarist's (i.e., relatively ignorant guitarist's) tone. Like Rob Chappers has said about scooping mids, "That's folly!" lol You've gotta let the guitar keep most of the frequencies it naturally makes to let it speak.

Ironically, I prefer darker acoustic tones;)

  • good tune! what guitar is being played?

  • God, why do Fender's prices have to be so abhorently awful? A year ago this amp was under 1k! God, they might give the best tone, but they surely don't give the best price.

  • Haha. Check out something like top hat. Fender is cheap compared to them!

  • @bawla213 Yeh I know I'm on the hunt for one now but I'm at least happy they didn't Dumble their prices because then that would be really ghey! LOL I had the previous Hot Rod Deluxe not bad but the OD was weird but I heard they've improved the newer Fender line to improve the tightness of the low end and add more sparkle to the high end. Thats probably why they upped the price a bit. IMO they should of kept the prices the same cause the previous ones had tone bugs.

  • @bawla213 They are chancers who play on their past rep to fleece the consumer. Not cool.

  • @Danthehorse Re: your comment about Fender "fleecing" customers. You also suggest that Fender leans on its past history of quality suggesting that quality no longer exists with this company. Simply untrue on both counts. I own a galaxy of quality Telecasters, Stratocasters, and tube amps. Did I pay a lot of money? It depends on what one considers to be dear regarding price. Any quality instrument including amps is going to cost. So, what is the argument? I love good Fender gear at any price.

  • how about the vibrolux reverb to compare... i hear good things bout that too

  • at about what volume does the amp start to break up? do you feel there's any disadvantage to the amp not having a mid-range control?

  • I want to be able to play like that so bad.

  • This is a really easy tune, good jazz blues starter. I played in a single position. Just listen to and practice one measure at a time. Sorry I don't have a tab for the tune.

  • Which clean is better and won't break up easily: Fender DRRI, Fender BJ tweed, or Fender HRD or BD

  • "Which clean is better and won't break up easily: Fender DRRI, Fender BJ tweed, or Fender HRD or BD"

DRRI has the best sounding clean for sure. DRRI and HRD probably have about the same clean head room. Blues Jr. and both "BDs" (Blues Deluxe and Blues Deville) break up little earlier. I would recommend you to check the DRRI and HotRod, HotRod is more a rock amp and can give distortion at lower volume as it has a gain and master volume controls. DRRI has just one volume knob per channel.

  • Hold on a tick...

DRRI is only 22 watts. therefore, will break up fairly soon...though it's clean sounds the best, just because the price allows it to be that way.

The HRDeluxe is 40 watts and the deville is 60, meaning they will break up fairly late.

The BD's schematics show that there is a stage of gain that is always one, therefore will probably breakup either sooner or the same as DRRI. My final advice.....

    Try them all.

  • Well it all depends on the speaker wattage, power tubes, and preamp tubes as well. Although the DRRI is 22W, the speaker (Jensen C12K) is 100W, so it'll break up at 8-10/10. The BluesDeluxe is 40W but has a 50W speaker, so it'll break up sooner (about 3-4/12). The BJ is 15W and has a 50W speaker but breaks up soonest because of EL84 power tubes and 12AX7 preamp tubes. I've had each before and would recommend trying all, but DO NOT buy a Mexican made amp (BJ or BD) if you need it to be reliable.

  • Extremely well written answer. My only disagreement is about the comment on the unreliability of Mexican made amps. It might have been true in the past but nowadays I believe it's a myth.

  • I have (or I guess now sort of had) a Blues Jr that is/was horrible. 1 year old. Fender said covered for 5 years, but I later found that this only means they'll do up to 2 repairs in the first 5 years. Within 3 months, I had the input jack and all the pots were replaced. 2 weeks after the second repair it happened again and I was told that the next repair for this would be $165!! I take VERY GOOD care of everything I own and yet that amp still doesn't have a scratch on it. Don't support Fender!!

  • Well, I don't have anything personal against Fender. I have no doubt you're telling the truth but it might have been just a bad particular case.

And the shops I buy from are always giving a full (and UNCONDITIONAL) guarantee of 2 or 3 years. If they did otherwise, they would be facing charges - I would never allow them to trick me like that.

  • the secret is the speaker. install a 200 watt EV. they re insane can handle big bass without breaking up and then cut up nice with a distortion pedal. never ever found a fender spkr that can do both.

  • I cant tell you how many speakers ive killed in my deluxe ended up selling and buying a 67 super reverb. Its funny I thought of using a p.a. speaker but was scared of losing tone.

  • The DRRI is the best clean though.

  • Nice tune, great sound and useful comments here. Thanks for posting !

  • Thanks!

  • Hey man i got i question for ya should i buy the deluxe reverb or the twin reverb?? cuz the deluxe is about 1200 and the twin is 1400 but im not shure HELP!!!!

  • for some reason my first comment did not go thru. Deluxe Reverb for sure if you don't play at stadiums.

Check the other Fender offerings too, Blues JUnior, Champion 600, Blues/Hotrod Deluxe and the new XD series hybrids. All these are cheaper than the models you mention and you can get more distortion at lower volume level from these too.

  • ummm a deluxe reverb is 900 and twin reverb is 1200.

  • If you want a combination of the two, get the Super, but the Deluxe is the most portable of the three.

  • i'd name the song....skeetlemcdeetlebeat.

  • HEnry Garza (Los Lonely Boys), uses a Deluxe Reverb, heluva tone. With the obligatory tubescreamer. Personally I think the tube screamer is overrated, but not when Garza has it on. Stevie also used ridiculously large gauge strings, and would be the first to say (in fact, he has said) that his sound comes mainly from his hands, not his amp.

  • hey man if i want a SRV blues fat sound:P would you recommand me this amp???

  • i would brother, SRV used one of these amps, he turned it up loud as fuck though, so id advise to get a TS808(he used one as well). also you gotta have a strat

  • This is a great amp, but SRV used mostly Vibroverbs and Super Reverbs.

  • SRV didn't use deluxe reverbs

  • Wow you're an idiot.

  • got the same in RI 65.Just a post in the surf sound area.

  • Great Amp!!!

  • THanks. He bought the amp, not new, but used. It had some wierd grill cloth. Mutlicolored and everything. He didn't like it, so he changed it.

  • was this the reissue?

  • Yes, it is a 2006 reissue model, all stock except some preamp tubes. I am the person who played on this clip, my son taped it.

  • How do you like the amp? I'm considering buying one for use as a jazz/blues amp.

  • It is a great amp, gets pretty loud before it starts to break up though, does jazz & blues very well, the clean tone is really cool.

I play in a 4-piece blues group and the DRRI unmiced is still too loud for most the clubs we play at. Prefer to use my Princeton Reverb (12W) most of the time, or Vibro-Champ (6W) and mic it.

  • Thanks for the info.

  • Thanks for the info. I'll go and check it out.

  • No prob, you're welcome.

  • Very nice. I have a few clips of my DRRI posted as well. Why the re-grill? It sure didn't come from the factory that way. Just wondering...

  • Thanks, your clips sound great too.
