Ahh...I remember this well as a young boy then. My family and I used to watch it and the other 'classics' such as 'Bread' etc. Where DID the years go?!!
Ive never watched these and im from Liverpool. Granted they are before my time since i wasnt born till 1988 but i love other comedy from the 70s. I defo defo have to buy all these. I know i will love them.
Dont bother. It was probably the start of the country starting to hate Scousers!
All by the efforts of a lot of non-Liverpool shite actors. Had nothing on Bread though, the bbc's biggest(Goebbels standard) abuse of Liverpool. How did the government get away with stopping us having our own tv presence, anyway.
Nowadays, wouldn't Nerys's accent be considered quite posh ? Back then, I think regional accents were tamped down quite a bit for national television.
The 2nd series(the first with Nerys Hughes, there were a few made with Pauline Colins and Polly James)came out on DVD a few years ago, still pops up on EBay.
I'm really surprised the rest of the orginal series isn't out on DVD too.
like views of the old pier head bus station with balcony-used to get a 44D to Northwood or 15D to Tower Hill with my brother in early 70's to visit one of our gran's in Southdene-if not used to get a 544 to Northwood from then new central bus station-now pt of Liverpool One - after having visited City Models near Clayton Sq-brilliant model shop-was always a mobile hot-dog vendor outside the shop-seem to recall the father in Liver Birds was an mpte bus driver and he always had his uniform on!
Given that this was a comedy series about two young people in the north of England, I wouldn't be surprised if The Liver Birds was nicknamed The Likely Lasses.
I loved The Liver Birds. Each week it would magically illustrate something that had happenedto me in the previous week. The same went for Rhoda. It was quite uncanny.
Was it Sandra's brother? I thought it was the brother of her flatmate (played by Elizabeth Estensen, after Polly James left) who kept rabbits...I could well be wrong though!
He used to say, "My name's Lucien and I breed rabbits." Wore a fur coat which may have been made from rabbit skins but I may be way off on that bit! He was played by Michael Angelis; Helen "Gail-off-of-Coronation-Street" Worth's long-time partner and narrator of Thomas the Tank Engine after Ringo Starr stopped doing it.
The answer is both. Carla Lane (the writer) cocked up and forgot Lucien was related to Beryl and wrote him into the Elizabeth Estenson series as well!
Found this interesting so I looked up the Liver Birds on Wikipedia...as you do.
On there, it says that Lucien did actually first appear on the Elizabeth Estenson (Carol Bosworth) series but that when the show was revived (in 1996), liberties were taken and although it was Beryl who featured with Polly, they used Carol's mother (played by Carmel McSharry) and brother (immortalised by Michael Angelis) as Beryl's mother and brother. Well...!
Nerys Hughes should be in Emmerdale.

The point is (apart from Michael Angelis) just how many actors from Liverpool were actually in this?

Sandra had a brother who kept rabbits didn't he? And wasn't Beryl's Mum an alcoholic?

You're right Caff. I got it the wrong way round. Either way, Ms Lane screwed up and had Lucien related to both!
BillShipton 1 year ago
@Caff68 Yes the remake annoyed me,continuity went out the window.
Carol was totally ignored,Carol's Mother and Brothert became Beryl's family ,with the surname changed to Hennessey instead of Boswell.
Beryl also stated she lived with Sandra til 78,it was Carol who did that,Beryl married in 73 and moved out.
